Marcus is a Hyur Highlander, forced from his home of Ala Mhigo as a child when the Empire invaded. Unsually for a refugee he wound up being taken into The Brume in Ishgard. As he grew up the city gave him his Metalworking skills and his first taste of Engineering and Machinistry, but it was never going to work out as his home forever. His atheism may well have eventually had him executed for heresy and besides, the place is bloody cold. He eventually left and went wandering in Eorzea, doing any odd jobs he could find to keep himself fed and with a place to stay. By chance one such job had him delivering damaged armour to the Blacksmiths' Guild in Limsa Lominsa to be melted down and repurposed, which sparked a chain events that finally had the man on his feet and able to put down roots in his chosen new home of Gridania.

Appearance

Marcus is tall with a large and muscular build, even for a Highlander. He has long black hair and a thick beard. His presence is imposing, and he tends not to be exactly delicate or graceful with his movements; at least when he's not working. Typically his expression gives little away about his mood and borders on stern in appearance. He favours wearing his long coat when out in public, both for its practicality and for its ability to conceal a sizeable gun. Common themes for his dress are dark, muted or monochrome colours, heavy boots and gloves, often with metal plates sewn into the material around the knuckles.

Personality

Especially around strangers or new acquaintances Marcus will come across as quiet and reserved. He is stoic to a point, but never too far beneath the quiet demeanour lies a fearsome temper. Once triggered he can be prone to fly into a rage, shouting and hitting things or offering up barbed words to whoever has earned his ire. He is stubborn, particularly when it comes to his morals, though he could never be called the most charitable person; rather he will keep to himself a small handful of people he truly cares about.

Social skills aren't Marcus' greatest strength, and though he rarely means offence it's not unknown for him to cause it with poorly chosen words or unintentionally rude behaviour. Other times he will stutter to an awkward silence, apparently unable to properly articulate what he wants to say. It's all in his mind and he is by no means stupid, but sometimes his communication is lacking. This is one of the reasons he prefers the company of a limited number of close people; there is a feeling of security in knowing that a person understands you even if you cannot make yourself clear.

Marcus has an affinity with most animals, and on occasion may be seen to choose their company over that of people. Animals are simpler and less likely to conceal their intentions, he will reason. Chocobos in particular are a favourite.

Profession and Activities

Marcus is an all-round Metalworker. He can create and repair weapons, tools, armour, furniture, just about anything made out of metal. This work forms his "bread and butter", but his real interest is in Engineering. He'll jump at the chance to work on guns, contraptions, airships, anything in any way mechanical. His experience in this area is more limited, but he'll pour every ounce of his energy into a project to make sure to the best of his ability that he gets it right. He has set up his own workshop, Holt Metalworks, in Gridania. It is a small scale operation, currently staffed only by himself and his Elezen assistant Romannie, and is usually open for commissions large and small.

In his spare time he likes to explore, particularly in nature where he can find animals to watch. He may be convinced to join an adventure or two, especially if it's to help someone he cares about. When called on to fight his chosen weapon is his gunblade, which he manufactured and alters himself and is very proficient with, and if necessary he will use his fists. His large frame gives him significant punching power, though he is not highly trained in hand-to-hand combat. He can win his share of amateur boxing matches (which he has partaken in from time to time), but an experienced melee fighter will get the better of him.

Marcus is an atheist and has no magical abilities whatsoever, nor any interest in learning more than is necessary about the arcane. That's not to say that he necessarily isn't impressed by those who possess such powers, however.

Oh, and he likes to drink. His face is a familiar one in several of Eorzea's taverns and bars.

OOC

I'm new to roleplay in FFXIV, though I have years of experience on other platforms. I prefer paragraph roleplay, and I'd rather do it in game than in Discord etc.

I live in the UK and do shift work, so while I'm online a fair bit and mostly late (hence NA server), the days and times of day are changeable. I'm happy to keep in touch through Discord when I'm not in game.
