Considering his abilities in the use of a sword-and-board style of combat, Garre'to was encumbered by heavy armor of all types. His usual equipment consisted of the armor typically worn by the elite Sultansworn -- having been inducted as a Free Paladin five years after the Calamity. He kept it in a clean and polished state as much as he could, but would wear it into battle fairly often. When not wearing his armor, he had two outfits he would often be seen wearing, though the only difference between each outfits were the choice of upper body-wear. The one he wore more often than the other was a long coat, gun-metal black, with a gray vest and a darker-colored shirt underneath. The other was a simple red-sleeved doublet with a blackened vest. No matter which outfit he would be wearing, he always had on a pair of plated jackboots for simple defense and armored vambraces, for the same reason as the boots.

Its unique function was to have two different states -- when hilted the blade is folded into itself. Garret's sword was, strangely enough, an elaborately-crafted gunblade -- modeled after a Garlean prototype recovered by raiders from Limsa Lominsa. It had a function that enabled it to shift between two positions. When "holstered," the blade was collapsed and locked into a section of the hilt; in this state, it looked like an unorthodox flintlock pistol, bent to be straight at the grip. Its activated state had it shifting out of the hilt, and extended into a one-edged scimitar. On the blunt edge were hooks that allowed him to effortlessly grapple his opponents' weapons with a simple twist of the sword -- the hilt also had too pieces extended to serve the very same purpose.

His shield of choice was a lantern shield, essentially a buckler with an activated flame core hidden underneath the metal plating, allowing light to be illuminated through a design of slots and holes along the surface. This served a practical purpose, allowing him to see in the dark, but was also used somewhat to his advantage by startling his opponents with the light. The shield had two swords slotted parallel to his arm, which Garret could use to stab if needed.

To say that this character is a "work in progress" would be a massive understatement. I've yet to really be able to fully develop Garre'to as a character as of yet but fully intend on doing so in the immediate future. What you see on this page will be altered or scrapped entirely as I get more into the character.

WARNING: Some content on this page will be mature, but this will be kept to a minimum.

Garre'to Brenna is a roleplaying character on the Balmung legacy server. All OOC content on this page will be displayed in these yellow-ish boxes.

Garreto1.png

Garre'to is considered a freelancing Adventurer. In the time since the devastating Calamity he had been training himself in various disciplines and has garnered some proficiency through training with all of the known Guilds of Eorzea. His primary focus, however, was on the combat style of the sword and shield of the Gladiators -- though he had also trained extensively with the Lancers of Gridania to be able to handle spears as well. He often busies himself with taking on random work from across the realm. He has even garnered a bit of respect through his work in the Colisseum in the name of the Gladiators' Guild of Ul'dah, extending himself as somewhat of a philanthropist sympathetic to the plight of refugees.

He often prefers the name "Garret" as opposed to his Keeper name -- mostly for the reason that he had never known his birth parents, and was raised by Hyur Midlanders in Limsa Lominsa. Despite the ease of pronunciation, those close to him had begun to affectionately refer to him as "Garret" and he had kept it as his de-facto moniker.

Early Life

Garre'to was born on the 25th Sun of the 2nd Umbral Moon in the year 1553 during the Sixth Astral Era, and was the third-born -- the second and last son -- of a family of six. However, he had never known his family. From all accounts of the days following his birth, his Moonkeeper tribe was set upon by a marauding band of Ixal in the Twelveswood. He was found in a shattered basket by a couple of Hyur Midlanders who were a part of the investigation. Officially adopted, the couple took the kit to their home in La Noscea, where he would be raised among a small community.

His step-mother was a retired adventurer, remaining at home to take care of her four children (including Garre’to) while his step-father remained on his path to provide a means to live for the rest of the family. Life continued uninterred for them all until Garre’to was well into his late-teens. Around then, it came to light that the father had run in and involved himself with some very powerful, influential, and spiteful individuals from across Eorzea -- most of this threat having been borne from the city-state of Ul’dah. Unsuspectingly, a group of hired mercenaries and thugs set upon Garre’to’s homestead, with the hope of drawing out his father. He witnessed the deaths of his foster family before he was able to slip away and escape.

Homeless and without care, Garre'to left for Limsa Lominsa. From there he would chart a course to Ul’dah.

♦ Behaviour

Friendly, casual, and outgoing. Garre'to often gave others the impression of his reliance on formality and a stoic attitude, but in reality he was an open and easy-going character, eager to engage others in hearty conversation of various subjects. He was honor-bound as a Paladin to protect those who were unable to protect themselves, but no code of honor would prevent him from indulging in his favorite vices -- alcohol and the feeling of a warm woman wrapped around his manhood being two of them. Indeed, Garre'to was an adventurer through and through, acting more as a brash and reckless mercenary than a noble and honorable Paladin. Despite all, he was trusted greatly by his companions and allies, reliable almost to a fault.

He spoke with a light accent to his voice, though his speech was flowing and often upbeat but largely informal. Many who engaged with him in conversation had noted that he would often ramble on about nonsensical or irrelevant things when certain trigger words were ever mentioned around him, only if he were directly involved with said conversation(s).

Combat

Garre'to wields his weapon of choice while assuming his standard combat position.

His Style

Garre'to considered himself a frontline fighter. He skillfully married the sword and shield together along with his nimble and dextrous movements, which made him a capable equal against some of the best swordsmen that ventured in Eorzea. His movements were fluid and rumored to be as quick as lightning -- though there was never any substance to such rumors. That did not discredit the fact that Garre'to was still very light on his feet, despite being heavily encumbered by armor. Quick as lightning, though? Could anyone truly be that fast?

His Gear

Garre'to put on display various assortments of clothing and armor, and for the latter he had "too many to really keep track of" due to his growing involvement with the various guilds across Eorzea. When not wearing one of his sets of armor armor his outfit was a simple red-sleeved doublet with a blackened vest and a pair of plated jackboots for simple defense, as well as a pair of armored vambraces, for the same reason as the boots.

His weapons were as equally varied, though nothing too extravagant -- the only exception being the Garlean gunblade he often keeps on his person; depending on the ocassion, he even keeps it in plain view and always at his hip. The weapon itself was a prototype design from plans recovered in one of the Empire's many fortresses across Eorzea. Its unique function was to have two different states -- when hilted the blade is folded into itself. When it is active, the blade unlocks and shifts into a one-edged scimitar with hooks along the opposite edge, allowing for Garre'to to grapple a weapon out of his opponent's hand.

Discovering the Unsung Heroes of Vylbrand Academy

During the latter days of his training with the Sultansworn, Garre'to happened upon an escalating scene in Ul'dah late one evening and became involved in its progression when he had decided to step in to attempt to, at the very least, break up the fight. When the belligerents took it elsehwere, Garre'to followed after a small party of concerned individuals just so that he could provide some form of assistance. When finally they came upon the scene in Western Thanalan, he and two others set upon both parties in an attempt to conduct a citizens' arrest. Shortly after, a larger group arrived to collect one of the involved individuals and bring peace to the whole situation. Garre'to later learned that this group hailed from Vylbrand Academy, of Limsa Lominsa, and the next day sought out the group himself -- interested in learning more about them. He found entrance into the organization almost immediately, and learned of the Academy's workings and institutions.

The day after, in the evening, he sat in the foyer of the Academy's main hall, surrounded by the Academy's pupils and instructors as they made jolly conversation. The impromptu proceedings were halted when a relatively young woman came to the door of the Academy and offered to sell a host of treats to them. Though they were tantalizing, Garre'to avoided eating for no particular reason. Eventually, he started to see it was a good decision -- those who ingested the cookies were stricken by some kind of curse, in which their minds were devolved into young children, and they suffered hallucinations as the night progressed. Above the Academy, a Garlean airship moved into position and the Academy was set upon by its air-dropped legion. Garre'to followed those who were of sane mind into the secret underground basement of the Academy, confusion overcoming him as everything happened so fast. They all escaped to an airship docked inside of a secret cavern just off of the island, pursued by the Garleans and their agents. It took effort for the ship to get airborne, but when it did they were once again set upon by one of the larger airships. Garre'to, having no other choice but to help, immediately manned one of the cannons in an effort to drive off one of the pursuing airships. Grappling hooks pinned the ship and allowed Garlean soldiers to board. In direct combat, Garre'to and others from the Academy fended off a host of legionaries as they boarded the airship.

When, at last, they had a moment to breathe their ship landed on a secluded island far off of the coast of La Noscea where they could rest and recuperate. With this, he took the opportunity to learn more about what, exactly, he was getting himself into. He learned that Vylbrand Academy was some sort of a "front" for a secret project called the Unsung Heroes, wherein adventurers and heroes alike came together to tackle the world's problems as a group. After learning this, he found himself involved in something much larger than he had anticipated -- but offered his assistance wherever he was needed.

♦ Miscellaneous

Hooks

This character is generally easy to walk up to and RP with. Reactions will differ depending on the situation, but guaranteed RP will be had when socially confronted.

-- Everything is ordered based on the ease of interaction. For example, anything closer to the top of the list is easier to RP with.
-- This section is also written in present-tense.

Sultansworn

Garre'to is easily recognizable as a Sultansworn as he is more than often adorned in his armor.
Potential RP Involvement:
-- Even though he is given very little restriction as a free Paladin, Garre'to can be seen "patrolling" Ul'dah very frequently.
-- Other Sultansworn may approach him at any given time for interaction.

Gladiatorial Reputation

Although he scarcely took part in the combat ring of the arena, Garre'to had garnered quite a reputation prior to joining the Sultansworn.
Potential RP Involvement:
-- Folks familiar with the rumors surrounding him may be able to recognize him easily. (Rumors will be added in eventually down below)

Philanthropic

Garre'to used his meager wealth during the latter months of his time with the Gladiators to donate to the poor and the city's refugees.
Potential RP Involvement:
-- Those he had donated to (as he had often done so directly) would be able to recognize him.
-- Conversely, he had likely made enemies amongst the monetarists of Ul'dah.
-- As a Free Paladin, he offers protection and aid to the refugees.

Vengeful

Although tempered and cooled years after the deaths of his family, Garre'to is driven to mete out justice to those who were responsible for their murders.
Potential RP Involvements: Conflict-focused
-- Said bandits may still very well be active in the La Noscea area or have become sellswords in the years since his family was murdered.
-- His father, Derian Brennar, might still very well be alive. (Possibly under a different name...) Garre'to would have questions for him if he were to ever find the truth.
