He’s a good sort. Very charismatic, very chivalrous. T’is a rare an’ pleasant thing tae find these days. He’s generous, too, an’ a competent fighter. But get him intae an argument an’ he’s stubborn as an Aldgoat. We’ve bickered a few times, an’ Gods th’ man knows how tae drive me half insane. Still, we usually make up a couple of suns later, once he’s decided tae stop broodin’. Heh. Truth be told, he’s a fine man. Whichever lass ends up with him is a lucky lass, indeed. I doubt I’ll ever tell him as much, though. … Hm? Well, yes, I think he’s handsome. How is that relevant tae anythin’? …This interview is over."</i> ~Brynhilde Wulfe |

Inquiry Into a Soldier
Welcome. I've been expecting you. Please, have a seat. I'm not used to this sort of thing, so please bear with me. First of all, it's geer, not jur - the least you can do is correctly pronounce his name if you're going to be asking after one of my men. And yes, I know the man. I've been his commanding officer for eighteen years. He's a good soldier, if you ask me - knows his place, follows orders, and he's not a poor fighter to have at your side in the field, I can tell you that. So what do you want to know? Would you like to hear me spin a yarn over his rise from refugee to Flame Sergeant First Class? Or maybe you'd prefer something more personal, like the sad story of a family forced to flee from Ala Mhigo and carve a new life in cruel Ul'dah? Or is this a gossip column? If so, I hate to disappoint you, but I don't closely follow the boys' sexual escapades. But you say this is for the Mithral Eye, so I'll answer what I can. But I want to be perfectly clear that I'm not the Sergeant's best friend, and I'm not the an expert on his life. You make sure you print that somewhere - that this is all just hearsay and the ramblings of one man too old for this sort of thing. Some Men Are Like Mountains
So you want to know about Gyr... Well, he's Ala Mhigan so I shouldn't have to tell you that he's big, and dark, and built like an aurochs. But if you go looking for him, don't expect a barbarian. As large as he is, he doesn't really come off as brutish. I'm sure you know the type I mean - we all see the Ala Mhigan refugees huddling in the alleyways. For starters, Gyr actually wears clothes, not those ropey... whatever they are... the Ala Mhigan men love. And his hair's long, not shaved - no, no braids. I'd say he wears his hair in a younger man's style. Kind of moppish - I always thought it made him look scruffy when taken along with his beard. Oh, and he has miqo'te eyes - you know, two different colors? One's pale blue and the other's orange - you heard me, I said orange. Anyroad, I've never seen him look down on the other boys, and I've never even heard of him losing his temper. At worst he'll light up one of his cigarettes and rumble a short reply, and then go on his way. He's like... he's like a mountain. Big and unmovable, but he doesn't really lord it above you. Some men are just like that. And maybe that's why he's so friendly, I guess confidence can do that to you. But he must've seen a fancy play or read an old book somewhere along the way cause he's not just friendly, but he can be outright proper. I've never seen him not shake another man's hand, and for the women... he bows over their hands, like a proper gentleman. I think I even saw him once kiss Lieutenant Sorielle's hand. Oh, that's another thing - he never lacks for company, if you know what I mean.
