The firstborn son born to a poor Hingan family descended from samurai, the boy who would become Mitsurugi no Jin 「みつるぎ(美剣)家のじん(仁)」, or Jin Mitsurugi, lost his parents at a young age. Raised by his grandfather, Musashi, a samurai of the Sekiseigumi, he learned kenjutsu and iaijutsu and eventually joined the ranks of Kugane's protectors himself to emulate his master.
Musashi instilled in Jin the ideal of "aku soku zan" (悪即斬), to "slay evil immediately". Jin took this motto to heart, and it led him to fame as Jin of the Flashing Blade. In pursuit of this motto, he ultimately slew a wicked man of high status in Kugane. Musashi sacrificed himself so that his student could live free, but Jin left the Sekiseigumi and Hingashi behind to become a wanderer.
