♦ General

R'aayken was born into a small tribe of miqo'te in southern Thanalan, living on the cliffs above the Sunken Temple overlooking Little Ala'Mhigo. His siblings were diverse in their skills, and his father insisted they each explore their interests, believing their diversity would make them stronger as a whole. The tiny tribe became friends with a merchant family out of necessity; his father needing to supply his offspring with materials to bolster their talents that were not offered from the sand and sun.

During the Battle at Carteneau, R'aayken was sent as the youngest male to stay with the merchants in Ul'Dah when his father decided to defend their homeland. Day by day the wreckage was sifted, bodies identified. His caretakers found new ways to inform him of losses as he slowly amassed their soul crystals as perfect mementos, each an exact reflection of his siblings' talents and desires. He carried the Summoner's Soul with him wherever he would go; it belonged to his oldest brother, and it kept his heart strong.

He was informally adopted into the merchant's home, and his name was 'modernized' to afford an easier time bonding to the city, among other more aggressive augmentations to soften his tribal edges. his last name was dropped entirely, and he was mansed in his new father's home. As he grew he took the trade as a means to provide for himself. He would stay with a few merchants in cycle until he was old enough to fend on his own, invited to continue working with his family circle as a jack of trades; some days checking shipments on the dock, some days selling in the booth. He obtained an intimate first hand account of how things came from the field to the hearth.

Using his connections as a merchant, he procured many books from Mealvaan's Gate and the Arcanists who studied there. Reading of his brother's interests made him feel closer, sometimes as if he were still there; maybe in the other room already asleep. He would pretend, and he would smile. Eventually he saved gil to make a trip to Limsa and visit the guild properly. He found little trouble earning their kindness, and after a little adjustment to his concept of his chosen "class", he had his first ruby-jeweled followers.

Upon returning he mostly used the carbuncles to bring flash to his booth. He taught them all manner of small tricks of varying cuteness, often taking tips from customers or running notes for replenishment to the Weaver and Goldsmith guilds. The Summoner's Soul began to attune, and soon a clearly Gridanian post addressed from some Y'mhitra found his door.

Rayken eventually found himself in the grand bastion of Ishgard on business setting up trade lines for the abundant new raw materials and more exotic finished goods that would sell well in the sands for their exotic flair. His ears rang throughout his visit, eventually leading him to the source, finding the Skysteel Armory. He was immediately in love, as the Machinists there combined their craft of small, intricate parts into the greater sum of magnificent, self-reliant machines of purpose. More impressive was how they could control these machinations with their own energies! He was astounded, and immediately reswore his life to the gun. His families' stones remain on his person always, but the Summoner's Soul would be encased in compartments inside the handle of any firearm to cross his palm before it would ever be shot.

The methods were more technical than mystical, but his strategies differed little from his Summoner's Horn to his Machinist's Goggles:
Where he used to call forth splintered essences of primal gods, bursting from the earth to bid his will,
Rayken now slings metallic pills from his pocket, watching to unfold a thousand times over and take off with propellers before hitting the ground.
Just as his summons had special roles: defender, attacker, ranged,
so do his new metallic keepers, providing boon for allies and bane for foes.
Where he himself would sling mana from safety's range, applying a hundred chaoses from a hundred pages of his sentient tome,
he now flung near-molten lead across great distances from a firearm that was as sentient as his book had ever been; a true extension of his own arm.
