Appearance

Shofie is a very short, very muscular, dark-skinned miqo'te woman. Her physique is like that of a weight-lifter. She is not svelte or particularly thin, and most of her weight comes from the sheer amount of muscle she carries on her small frame.

She keeps her dark red hair cropped very short, as she finds it annoying when it gets in her face. Shofie is of mixed heritage, her mother being a Keeper of the Moon, and her father being a Seeker of the Sun. She has heterochromia--her left eye is blue, her right eye green. From a distance, they look fairly similar; it's not until one gets closer this difference is usually discernible. She has noticeable freckles.

Shofie has a purple crescent moon tattoo on her left shoulder, and a series of stars of varying sizes that trail over the left side of her body. Some of the stars go as high as her neck, down her left arm, and down her side, onto her belly, and the top of her buttocks. Unless she is covered fully from neck to toe, at least a few of the stars or part of the moon will be visible. See reference sheet below.

Shofie is rarely found without heavy armor that covers her from head to toe. She feels unsafe if she is not covered completely. Even when she is dressed down for a simple trip into town, she will still wear clothing that covers most of her body. Shofie nearly always wears a simple cloth wrap around her tail, and it is sure to cover her tail at the base, but usually leaving a bit near the end exposed. She is hyper-sensitive to this area being touched, so she started wrapping it as a means of protecting it.

Despite being a fighter, Shofie's body is mostly free from all but the most minor of scars. The only real notable exception is a large scar a few inches to the left of her navel. The scar is clearly a healed stabwound. If someone happens to see this scar by any chance, she will immediately become sullen and withdrawn, or outright hostile. She will not talk about it.

Personality and Behavior

Shofie is fun-loving and adventurous to the point of recklessness. She will often dive into something without thinking, frequently dragging her friends along in the process. She thinks and acts with her heart, and is exceptionally passionate in anything she decides to commit herself to. Shofie is often in trouble, and has gotten good at talking herself out of (or sometimes, into even worse) situations as a result. It can be difficult to talk her out of something once she gets her mind set to it.

She is a very sharp individual, however, her personality lends itself more to apathy in most things that don't directly concern her. This can lend the impression to some that she is a bit of an airhead at times. She does tend to space out quite a bit.

She is an expressive individual, very animated when talking, very messy when she eats. She lacks manners and tact, and is often blunt when talking to people. Despite this, she's quite adept at lying, or as she prefers to call it, "creatively bending the truth", particularly if it means getting herself out of trouble, or easing her ability to break the rules in some fashion.

Shofie's eyes are very sensitive to light. Living most of her life nocturnally as a Keeper has lead to her forming a sort of acquired sensitivity to bright light. She is most active during the evening, preferring to sleep during the day where possible.

(3.1 edit: Since she has subsequently married and moved in with Rhen, his schedule has evened hers out and she's a bit more of a day person than she used to be. She still grumbles about being awake before noon, though.)

History

Before the Calamity

Shofie's father, a Seeker of the Sun, in his tribe back home, was unable to procure any females of his own, so he decided to take to a life of adventure, and happened to meet a lovely Keeper. A brief affair ensued, the product of which was Shofie. Shofie's father left well before she was born, and he is unaware of her existence. Shofie's mother gave her a Keeper name, hence her lack of a tribal prefix. Her mother had hoped she would take after herself, but was dismayed when Shofie ended up looking more like her father.

Everyone in her tribe knew the "secret" that her father was a Seeker, and shunned her, if they just weren't outright mean to her. The tribe idealized specific physical beauty standards, which Shofie fell very much outside of, leading to her standing out from her tribemates. She was taught often and harshly that Seekers were bad, and that by extension, she was shameful merely for even existing.

Shofie grew up painfully lonely, enduring bullying from nearly all the women in her tribe. The tribe is a superstitious, racist, sexist society, and little kindness was paid her way as a result.

When Shofie was a teenager, she had an intense but brief love affair with the daughter of one of the tribe's leadership, a girl named Rhesh Nbolo. Rhesh's mother disapproved strongly of the relationship, and as soon as she found out, she forced the girls apart, and began treating Rhesh poorly, which it turn, caused Rhesh to treat Shofie poorly. Rhesh became one of Shofie's more viscous bullies at her mother's encouragement. The breaking point was the night before the proving ceremony that would declare the girls now adults, Rhesh threatened Shofie's life. This so utterly broke Shofie's heart she fled that very night from the tribe and never looked back. Having never completed the ritual, Shofie is not technically considered an adult by her tribe.

After the Calamity

The Calamity didn't effect Shofie much personally.

She left her tribe, and her ties with her mother and tribemates was entirely severed due to the bullying. She spent a year or so living off the land in the Shroud forests, dealing with the locals barely-contained hatred of Keepers, in no small part thanks to the Coeurlclaws. She fished heavily and began trading her fish for other goods. After a negative encounter with the Coeurlclaw tribe, Shofie decided to leave the Shroud entirely and found herself in Ul'dah. Seekers were a far more common sight in Thanalan, so Shofie began to pass herself off as a Seeker, wanting to avoid the negative associations that came with her Keeper ties. Unfortunately, Shofie doesn't understand Seeker of the Sun customs at all, which results in some people catching on that she wasn't being honest. Her ruse also tended to fall flat when people noticed her fangs. Much to Shofie's surprise, however, many people didn't particularly care about her lineage.

Later, she started taking odd-jobs with the Adventurer's guild to make some extra coin in addition to her fishing.

More recently, Shofie has stopped attempting to pretend she's anything other than herself. She is both a Seeker and a Keeper, and yet neither, but this bothers her less now than it did a few years ago.

The Dusk Wolves

Shofie and her husband Rhen manage a small company of treasure hunters, called The Dusk Wolves, exploring Eorzea and finding rare valuables to sell to the highest bidders. Shofie is more or less the face of the small company, handling contacts for the others, and functioning as a translator for Rhen during meetings. On missions, Shofie functions as the brute force while the others are a bit more adept at finesse. Unlike Rhen and the others, Shofie is not very stealthy or particularly graceful. Shofie is not allowed along on stealth missions.

Due to Rhen's desire to never speak unless absolutely necessary, Shofie has become something of a translator for him, particularly when handling things involving The Dusk Wolves. She can read his intent and meaning so well, that when the pair are talking to people, she will often look to Rhen for his answer, before giving it for him, so he doesn't have to actually talk. Subtle nods, eye and ear movements convey more than enough information for Shofie to give accurate answers. She has gotten so good at this, people sometimes joke that the pair might be telepathic.

Currently, as of the events of As Goes Light So Does Darkness, Rhen and Shofie have acquired a small tavern in The Goblet called The Coeurl's Whisker, and use it as a means of laundering money they obtain in less-than-legal ways. Most people, including much of The Whisker's staff, have no idea the small bar is used for this purpose. The average person would have no knowledge of this. The Coeurl's Whisker is, for all intents and purposes to the average outsider, just a normal bar/eatery.

Behind closed doors, Shofie and Rhen manage a lot of contacts, have black market dealings, and traffic goods to the highest bidders, all while making sure their own pockets are lined nicely in the process.

Combat

While her personality is normally light-hearted and jovial, in combat she becomes very serious.

Her fighting style can be most aptly described as that of a berserker. She gets wild and whipped into a bloodlust easily during combat. For a time, she didn't care if she got hurt or not, however, she's trying to get a better control over her anger and fight more rationally.

When she was with her tribe, she was taught how to use a lance, and is very adept at it as a result. The tribe used lances not only as weapons, but also during dances for display. She is actually a capable dancer due to the tribe requiring strict practice, however, she flatly refuses to do this anymore, finding it distasteful.

However, since disassociating herself from her tribe, she has taken up more physical-based forms of combat than the kind her tribe taught her. Finding enjoyment from fist-fighting and swinging an axe, she eventually all but set aside her training as a lancer. She finds immense pleasure from combat with a skilled opponent, caring little for physical pain.

She is skilled with fist-fighting, lances, and axes, and has some minor ability with a bow, though she does not favor ranged combat, so she never excelled with the bow. She basically knows how to not shoot herself in the foot, and that's about it.

Relationships

Shofie and Rhen

It was through sheer random chance she was thrown together with Rhen Maverick on an Adventurer's Guild assignment, and the pair became close. The friendship blossomed into more, with the two eventually pledging themselves together, and Rhen taking Shofie's last name as an expression of his love for her. Shofie is utterly devoted to him, and loves him more than anything in life. She goes to great lengths to try to protect him (though he does not really need it). Shofie and Rhen regard one another as family. Since Rhen never had a family, and Shofie lost hers, they both value this association highly.

Rumors & RP Hooks

  • Shofie works as a member of the Dusk Wolves; providing muscle and security for it's other members while they are on missions. Shofie is surprisingly strong despite her small stature.
  • She tends to be more active at night.
  • She likes fishing and can often be found doing so.
  • Many guards in the city-states are familiar with her, as she had a penchant for getting into bar fights and landing herself in gaol from time to time. Most of them she's friendly with, in spite of them arresting her.
  • She is from the Shroud, so anyone from that area or familiar with Gridania might recognize her, though she was very withdrawn and kept to herself mostly during that period of her life.
  • She went through a period of heavy drinking while living in Ul'dah. If your character frequented bars in the area, they may recognize her. They might remember her as a very loud, boisterous drunk with a bad habit of getting into barfights with people. She liked to gamble, frequently placing bets that she would subsequently cheat at to win.
