Inquiry Into a Soldier

Welcome. I've been expecting you. Please, have a seat. I'm not used to this sort of thing, so please bear with me.

First of all, it's geer, not jur - the least you can do is correctly pronounce his name if you're going to be asking after one of my men. And yes, I know the man. I've been his commanding officer for eighteen years. He's a good soldier, if you ask me - knows his place, follows orders, and he's not a poor fighter to have at your side in the field, I can tell you that.

So what do you want to know? Would you like to hear me spin a yarn over his rise from refugee to Flame Sergeant First Class? Or maybe you'd prefer something more personal, like the sad story of a family forced to flee from Ala Mhigo and carve a new life in cruel Ul'dah? Or is this a gossip column? If so, I hate to disappoint you, but I don't closely follow the boys' sexual escapades.

But you say this is for the Mithral Eye, so I'll answer what I can. But I want to be perfectly clear that I'm not the Sergeant's best friend, and I'm not the an expert on his life. You make sure you print that somewhere - that this is all just hearsay and the ramblings of one man too old for this sort of thing.

Some Men Are Like Mountains

So you want to know about Gyr...

Well, he's Ala Mhigan so I shouldn't have to tell you that he's big, and dark, and built like an aurochs. But if you go looking for him, don't expect a barbarian. As large as he is, he doesn't really come off as brutish. I'm sure you know the type I mean - we all see the Ala Mhigan refugees huddling in the alleyways. For starters, Gyr actually wears clothes, not those ropey... whatever they are... the Ala Mhigan men love. And his hair's long, not shaved - no, no braids. I'd say he wears his hair in a younger man's style. Kind of moppish - I always thought it made him look scruffy when taken along with his beard. Oh, and he has miqo'te eyes - you know, two different colors? One's pale blue and the other's orange - you heard me, I said orange.

Anyroad, I've never seen him look down on the other boys, and I've never even heard of him losing his temper. At worst he'll light up one of his cigarettes and rumble a short reply, and then go on his way. He's like... he's like a mountain. Big and unmovable, but he doesn't really lord it above you. Some men are just like that.

And maybe that's why he's so friendly, I guess confidence can do that to you. But he must've seen a fancy play or read an old book somewhere along the way cause he's not just friendly, but he can be outright proper. I've never seen him not shake another man's hand, and for the women... he bows over their hands, like a proper gentleman. I think I even saw him once kiss Lieutenant Sorielle's hand. Oh, that's another thing - he never lacks for company, if you know what I mean.

Family

Winter Gyr: Ah, the Sergeant's father. Now there's a man worth talking about. First, think of your classic Ala Mhigan dressed in his braids, and roped, and sandals, and built like a brick wall - now think of the exact opposite of that. Now you've got an idea of Winter. I've never seen a smaller highlander, and you can tell he's never done a hard day's labor, but he's an absolutely brilliant herbalist. He had to be, to keep his wife healthy. And it's what saved his family when they ran from Garlemald and found themselves in Ul'dah. While the other refugees were loosing their heads or joining the resistance, Winter went to work. And I mean he worked. Earned citizenship for his wife and son within a year, and he's been a model citizen since. He's not hard to find, you know? Just go look for the only Ala Mhigan with a garden and thriving business instead of a rusty spear and a collection of woes.

Noelle Gyr: Now there's a sad story. Noelle's like Winter - small for her people, and not at all a warrior. As I hear it, she's been sickly since she was a babe - weak and more or less helpless without someone to look after her. Pretty as you please, though. Maybe that's why Winter married her. Anyroad, you'll never meet a sweeter creature than Noelle Gyr. Every so often she and Winter'll wait outside the Hall of Flame for their son to finish duty, and she's always smiling. Even when she's wrapped in a blanket to keep warm, even though the sun's baking Thanalan to a crisp, she's smiling. Odd, if you think about it, that she's lived as long as she has. Ala Mhigans never had the kindest reputation for invalids. Sometimes I hear some of the other boys whisper that she was nobility back in Gyr Abania - and sometimes I hear that she and Winter aren't Gyr's parents at all. Makes one winder, considering their both small and soft and their son's a few ilms short of seven fulm.

Company

Brynhilde Wulfe: Do I have to spell it out for you? He's a highlander, and she's a highlander, and a pretty one at that. I've seen them together, and when they're not flirting while she hangs off his arm, they're smiling at each other. I don't think I need to be any more clear do I? What? Well, no I don't know for certain, but it's a pretty safe assumption, I think! Look, if you don't like my opinions, don't for for them. Who's next on your list?

Horace Rook: Rook. Yeah, I know about Gyr's association with Rook. And until one of them breaks a law, there's absolutely naught I can do about it - much as I'd like to. Do you know that I've overheard more complaints from young ladies about Rook stalking them then I care to mention? No one's ever filed a charge though. Gyr hires him for the same reason as everyone else - he needs to know something that doesn't want to be known. No, I don't like it, but I can't exactly tell my soldiers who they'll associate or spend their hard earned coin on. I leave that sort of discrimination to the Twin Adders - Ul'dah takes all sorts.

Lottie Forsaidh: I don't really know much about her to be perfectly honest. She's pretty enough, I suppose, if you like that sort of thing, and she seems fond of Gyr. I think she's one of the medics who keeps that lot who runs the fights outside the Gate of Nald - but I could be wrong. My best guess is that she's the same as the other women in Gyr's company - but, hey, at least she's not miqo'te!

L'vi Lyrre: I'm not sure how comfortable I am talking about a man's woman-business - especially when it's about a miqo'te woman. What do you mean, why? Because we all know there's only one reason a man keeps a miqo'te girl around, and it's not to cook his meals! Anyroad, yes, I've seen the girl with Gyr. She's a tiny little beauty, and it's not hard to understand why he's so fond of her. If you're really interested in a sight, wait around until he finishes his shift. You'll see her waiting out there for him - she's the pretty one dressed all in white. Every day she waits, and every day he lifts her up onto his shoulder and strides off, like he's her own personal mount. He probably doesn't even realize how much he grins when he grabs her up.

Trachald Fyrilstymerl: I have no idea where Gyr found Trachald, but it couldn't have been a very nice place. Every time I see them together, the roegadyn looks like he wants to put Sergeant Gyr through a wall - which might be fun to see, but I'd hate to be around to clean up the mess. Anyroad, Trachald must know something about Gyr that others don't, because he doesn't seem like he wants to be around the Sergeant at all. Something's definitely going on there.

Xenedra Ambreaus: Oh, Gyr's other miqo'te. Look, talking about one miqo'te is one thing, but I don't think there's a soul in Ul'dah who hasn't heard of Xenedra Ambreaus and doesn't know what her game is. Do you really need to ask why any man would spend time with Xenedra? Besides, I thought this was supposed to be an exposé. Look, if you really want to know the nature of their relationship, I suggest you stop by the Hall of Records and take a look into Gyr's deeds of property.

Enemies

Garleans: You're just outright daft if I have to spell this out for you. Gyr's Ala Mhigan, and no, I don't mean some second generation brat born in Little Ala Mhigo, and raised to hate the Empire just because his parents told him to. The Sergeant was four and ten - almost a man grown - when Garlemald rolled into Gyr Abania. I reckon he has plenty of first hand experience lending to his hatred, so let's just leave it at that.
