History
Ashren was born and raised for the first part of his life in the lands of Ala Mhigo, raised solely by his father, a former soldier turned Blacksmith. He grew up with a happy life until he was eight years old, perhaps the only fond memories the Hyur has of his life before the Garlean Empire invaded his home and took away his childhood. He and father fled their home as Garlean soldiers attacked, though in their attempt to escape his father was injured. The two of them managed to flee as far as Ul'dah, though by the time they had reached the Thanalan Desert infection had already set in with his father's wounds and it was not long after arriving at the refugee camps that Ashren was left orphaned.
Unable to take anything with them when they fled beyond the clothes on their back, and an heirloom sword Ashren had little offer to have his father buried, and so the Arrzaneth Ossuary took the sword as tribute and gave his father a pauper's burial. It was here that Ashren first met his future mentor, a Wildwood Elezen by the name of Laurente Trentes that worked with the Temple of Thal as a Thaumaturge. The Elezen took pity on the young boy after seeing him mourning silently over his father's body during the funeral service, though more than pity he saw something in the Midlander that made him take interest. In the coming days Laurente would approach Ashren to make him an offer, taking the boy on as his protégé.
So Ashren was raised by the Wildwood that would become like a father to him, though Laurente was far more than just a mere priest. Unknown to the young boy his adopted father secretly lead an organization that had dwelt in the shadows of Ul'dah for over 1,500 years quietly operating as a network of spies, assassins, and soldiers who fulfilled their own brand of justice through a modified form of the Arrzaneth Ossuary's Vengeance Orders. This group was known as the Blades of Nald'thal, an organization whose fate would be strongly tied to Ashren's fate in the years to come.
He was put through intense physical and mental training, being taught the ways of martial combat by mentors from each guild so that he could at least grasp the basics, attempting to make him skilled as an all around combatant while also testing him to find his strengths and weaknesses. His intellectual studies were handed by the Thaumaturges of the Arrzaneth Ossuary where he seemed to excel the most, being incredibly adept at channeling his innate Aether energies Ashren took to the dark arts quite easily though he was never allowed to forsake his physical studies.
Eventually Ashren was initiated into the Blades and once a member he quickly climbed its ranks, not because of favoritism as Ashren was never given special treatment within the order, but because of his discipline and remarkable skill and insights. Ashren is a master at reading people, finding their inner most fears and secrets by studying their mannerisms and body language, the small ticks that might give away the truth when their words will not. This made him a master at manipulating others in order to achieve his own objectives, and his remarkable abilities with Black Magic made him a force to be reckoned with. It was not long before he found himself within the elite inner circle, though his personal triumphs would not last long. It was not long after this that the Blades would be contracted for their largest operation to date, the Battle of Carteneau.
Ashren marched into battle alongside his father and best friend, eager to test himself against one of the greatest enemies Eorzea had ever faced and firmly root his newly acquired position among the inner circle. Things did not fare as well as he had hoped however, and in the chaos that ensured a great many losses were suffered by the Blades, including its leader and Ashren's father Laurente who was struck directly by a blast of a suit of Magitek Armor. The blow destroyed his shield, sending a piece of shrapnel flying towards Ashren who had been standing nearby and badly injuring him, resulting in the partial loss of vision in his right eye and severe scarring.
Gripped by grief, Ashren sat clutching the body of his fallen father the moment Bahamut emerged, and as the Elder Primal lay seige to the battlefield all Ashren could do is sit in shock as blood and tears streamed down his face. As he held his father's lifeless corpse to his chest a bright white light would appear, engulfing him in its radiance and banishing Ashren to the void for five years, until now...

Personality
Ashren can be described one of two ways depending on who you talk to. To those who know him best he is cold and calculated, stoic and without any outward display of his emotions or thoughts. He is not without empathy or sympathy however, but he never chooses to show it (or incapable of showing it). He prizes himself on being able to read other people while remaining a mostly blank slate himself, and it is because of this that he is able to put up such a believable persona in his alter ego. To those he considers friends or allies he is honest and loyal, even noble to some extent. His father was a former Knight of Ishgard and the lifestyle and training that was instilled in him shows more than ever in Laurentes absence.
To those who do not know him well, or when playing his alter ego, Ashren is a very friendly and jovial person. His extroverted demeanor makes him very easy to approach and his charm and guile are what many would call disarming. He's a born salesman and many say he could sell you your own belongings while you still had them, something that may have come from growing up in Ul'dah and watching the market wards carefully as an adolescent. Ashren runs numerous business across Eorzea, not just in Ul'dah, and because of this he has a very shrewd and cunning business mind and his quick mind and ability to read people helps in all his dealings. When speaking with potential customers, clients, or friends he is always smiling, a cheshire grin permanently painted on his face during these interactions, though if you manage to draw his ire that façade quickly fades to a look that could stop your heart.
Those who work closely within inside of the Blades know that Ashren is incredibly zealous, perhaps more than even Laurente was before him. He works hard and shows strong idealism in what the Blades are doing, believing with his entire heart that what they do is for the greater good of all of Eorzea, and because of that he has shown to be impossible to sway in his beliefs. While he is often forced to do bad things to further the agenda of the Blades, Ashren has a very good and noble heart.
In terms of his alignment, in Dungeons & Dragons terms I'd say he is closest to Neutral Evil. He believes chaos and strict law impede progress and change, and his actions while done for the right reasons, are definitely not the actions of a Good aligned person. In terms of Exalted, his virtues would be Compassion ••, Conviction ••••, Temperance ••, Valor •••.
Affiliations
Ashren is a citizen of Ul'dah and a former citizen of Ala Mhigo. For a time he served as a Captain of the Immortal Flames and the Archon of the Blades of Nald'thal, however his former position with the Flames was forfeit during the Calamity when he vanished for five years and his latter position was relinquished due to recent events. Currently Ashren now sails the high seas with the Maelstrom when he's not gambling or drinking in either Limsa Lominsa or Ul'dah.
