Character

History

Eddard's family was not one accustomed to having money. Although they could make ends meet, doing anything more than that was a rare luxury. Eddard usually had to help make these ends meet in some form or another, whether it be through helping his father with his smithing or helping his mother with delivering the orders his father was fulfilling. Happy to help, Eddard hardly ever complained about his situation. Never having material possessions of much worth, Eddard learned to hold his family as his most prized possession. Hardly anything else mattered to him. Unfortunately, Bahamut did not spare anyone just because a young boy was fond of them.

Now being a young orphan among many others after the Calamity, Eddard found himself in a very difficult situation. He was too young to find work. He had no other family or friends that could help him now that his parents were gone. Eddard eventually found himself alongside the many refugees that situated themselves by the walls of Ul'dah, though with both empty purse and empty stomach, he wasn't so sure how long he'd last. Although against his beliefs, he found himself stealing out of necessity. Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. Sometimes food, sometimes gil. He made friends with other young men in the same situation as him that acquired what was needed in a similar way. Whether he wanted to admit it or not, they became (to at least some extent) bandits. Regardless of what they were considered, he cherished them all the same.

One day, this group stole from the wrong people. All of them were severely beaten, some killed on the spot for the others to see. The attackers were sure all would be dead in good time, anyway, since they were left to bleed out in the heat of the desert sun. Eddard, by some miracle, was rescued. His friends were not so lucky. He awoke in a warm bed for the first time in years in a room he did not recognize. He was stitched up in several spots, amazed he survived the wounds. His rescuer entered before long and they were able to introduce themselves. Despite the chance, Eddard never asked why the man decided to save him. How he'd repay him was discussed, though; he was to become a man worthy of the second chance he was given. Considering how his life would be ended in the case he declined, Eddard had little choice. The man gave Eddard armor, a weapon, and a small bit of gil. He ordered him to go to the Gladiator's Guild and start training immediately. He was ordered to return to him in a moon's time. Not a sun sooner. Not a sun later. Eddard left, amazed at how one's life can change so much in a mere day... Twice in one lifetime.

Appearance

Eddard has a few scars on his body, the most prominent being the ones he earned the day he nearly died. He is rather scrawny due to his usual lack of proper food, though his physique has started to thicken since his training at the Gladiator's guild started. He is relatively tall for a Midlander, standing at approx. 70 ilms. He has blue eyes and black hair that he tends to dye. He has a tattoo on his left cheek.

Personality

Although Eddard can easily come off as an angry young man with a stand off-ish sort of attitude, he is actually considerably kind to those he befriends. Learning the hard way that loved ones can be gone in a mere moment, he does his best to appreciate the time he has with those he holds close. He is willing to do most anything for those worthy of this fondness. Despite this caring aspect, he typically tries to keep it from showing on his surface. He tries to give the image of a tough guy that needs nobody but himself, though this could not be farther from the truth.

Combat

General

The only weapon Eddard has knowledge with is the sword, though he is by no means adept with the weapon. Having taught himself how to wield it after stealing it from a slumbering adventurer, there are a number of flaws in his technique. He may be able to fend off some lesser creatures with his skill but any opponent that poses as a legitimate threat would more than likely triumph over him. He is improving rather quickly in the Gladiator's Guild, though, finding the addition of a shield to his armory a very favorable thing. He also know how to fist fight, though he is no puglist. He is more so adept in the art of drunken brawls by a campfire.

Relationships

Family

Alabaster Holt: Eddard's father was a blacksmith of moderate skill and decent renown. Although his name was not on the lips of every merchant, it was on the lips of enough where he could make a living in the trade. That was enough for him, never being a man with expensive tastes. He worked hard for the small amount he made, though, wanting to be certain that his son could be provided for. He enjoyed his job even more when Eddard would help him, every moment spent with his son being one he cherished.

Lillith Holt: Eddard's mother was a soft spoken but very friendly woman. Far more charismatic than her husband, Lillith saw to the business end of her husband's trade. Starting as a business partner and turning into lover, the only thing she loved more than her job was her husband. Her infatuation with Alabaster did cause her to become jealous of Eddard at some times. There were some days where she deliberately sent Eddard on a delivery so she could have Alabaster to herself. She was fond of Eddard for sure, though the motherly instinct apparently was not strong enough in her to have it overcome the infatuation she felt for Alabaster. She was subtle enough with her efforts where neither Alabaster nor Eddard ever noticed, which was for the best.

Friends

Eddard did not have many friends before the Calamity, mainly spending his time with his family. After it, though, he had no choice but to make some. In time, he came across a group of young men around his age that he connected with. As orphans with a knack for theft, just like him, it did not take long for them to grow fond of eachother. Eddard found himself spending most of his time with these children for several years. Traveling, drinking, thieving, fighting, they did anything and everything together. Their unlawful actions eventually became numerous enough where the Brass Blades became aware of their existence. Although they tried not to kill in their acts, some people were injured from time to time, which was enough to label them as threats. Eddard especially was against these sorts of events occurring; as necessary as stealing felt to him, harming others was not what he wanted. Unless, of course, they tried to harm him or his friends.

Enemies

Being a thief, Eddard probably has plenty enemies he doesn't know about. He wonders if he'll run into anyone that will recognize him as that thief during his new tasks.

Rumors

Common Rumors (Often Heard)

  • "Yesterday, I see him in all rags. Today, I see him in full armor. What happened there?"
  • "The son of two people of business and he doesn't seem to have any interest in the trade."
  • "The bastard stole the first gil I ever earned! A real cold hearted rat if you ask me."

Moderate Rumors (Less Common)

  • "I think he started a bit of a ruckus in the Quicksand before. Maybe it was just some other refugee, though. You can hardly keep track of them all."
  • "He was dared by someone to spit in the face of a Brass Blade the other day. The idiot did it without much hesitation. He did manage to slip away, though."
  • "I heard he and his crew jumped a caravan on its way to Ul'dah. They didn't spare a damned soul!"

Rare Rumors (Almost Never Uttered)

  • "Some of the younger refugees looked amazed at his new armor. It looked like he was trying to hide it, but you could tell he loved the admiration."
  • "Someone was saying how a bunch of refugees were lying dead in the sand the other day and that he was one of them. They apparently tried to steal from... Hells, I don't even want to say his name."
  • "I saw him leaving the Gladiator's Guild the other day, though I was sure that he was nearly beaten dead just a few days before!"
