Marius Bonaparte is the ex-leader of the now defunct Blue Banner pirate consortium that operated in the oceans of Eorzea. He and his sister Marnie took over vice admiralty of the consortium after their father Bronn's presumed death during a battle with the Lominsan navy 7 years ago. Their control over the organization is short lived, and marked by constant conflict with the Lominsan authority; indeed, after only two years their hold on the consortium is fractured and many of the component pirate captains accept the Admiral's Galadion accord. The Blue Banner Consortium never recovers from this mass defection. Marius takes his failure to live up to his father's legacy to heart, and abandoned his post to become a sell-sword in Ul'dah. Normally boisterous and lively, Marius is often found drunk and often bloodied from a good-natured scrap. His normally good nature is sometimes overtaken by a black mood, fueled by guilt over his father's legacy and the fate of the Consortium. The extent of the impact these feelings have on Marius can be seen in his adopted epithet of the "Knight of the Broken Banner".

Marius is usually relatively unkempt, with messy hair and an unshaven face. His face bears a number of scars from his time as a pirate captain; indeed, his left eye was blinded by a saber shortly after taking command. His armor is plain but effective, strong and well-tested chainmail. He usually wears his armor even when off-duty, although occasionally he is known to wear his old coat and hat from his pirate days. His sword is the exception to his plain attire - his normally friendly attitude disapates entirely when people ask him about the origins of his sword. He will, at most, usually spit that "It was a gift", and leave it at that.
