Character

General

Saran Hotgo was a strange birth in his tribe. Born to an (as of yet) unnamed mother, his entire appearance was a shocking platinum color, including his eyes. Very soon afterwards, it was discovered that he was born blind and questions arose as to the efficacy of such a member. His mother, believing him to be a omen-birth of the Dusk Mother, fought against those who would cast the child aside. As Saran grew, he discovered new ways to "see" without eyes, and gained an abnormally acute sense of hearing and smell. He also developed a calm demeanor, and a appreciation of the beauty of the world's "essence". Proving himself again and again, at last he became a efficient member of the tribe, performing his duties just as well, if not better, then many of his peers. Despite being blind, he became proficient in swordsmanship, allowing his heightened sense to compensate for the sight he did not have.

Despite his proficiency using a sword, Saran rarely had any desire to use it. He would often engage in skirmishes with other Au Ra tribes that threatened the Hotgo, but otherwise would prefer talking to fighting. Although he wasn't especially charismatic, his calm way of approaching people and arguments often allowed him to escape most conflicts without a need for violence or force.

In his later years, he was sent off to scavenge for food during times of rest for the tribe. It was during one of these excursions that the Hotgo were massacred by the Dotharl. Saran returned to the smell of blood and death, learning through scattered dialogues between dying tribesman what had happened. With nowhere else to go, he began wandering without purpose. Somehow, within his wanderings, Saran stumbled into Eorzea and ultimately to Ul'Dah, where the sounds and smells of the city ignited new excitement within him and he sought to learn and live within this new place. He still holds on to some resentment over the loss of his tribe, however, often falling into bouts of extreme thoughtfulness after a few drinks. It's during these times Saran is at his most vulnerable, oftentimes closing himself off from the world.

He currently makes a living being a gladiator, despite his normally calm nature. When in battle, his calm demeanor drops quickly, giving way to a more cold and calculating front. Many before commented on the transformation being jarring, as if he became an entirely different person. Saran has commented that the reasoning for that is "Battle is never something to take lightly. Every fight is a possibility of defeat. Of death. There is no room for anything but caution." Saran survives rather well off fighting though, as the draw of a blind fighter seems to bring some semblance of fame with him.

Appearance

Eye(s): White (blind)

Hair: Platinum White

Skin: Pale

Although he is small for an Au Ra, Saran is physically adept. His skin, an abnormally pale white, seems to give him a glow when standing in the sun. He has sharp facial features, which often causes other to mistake him for being angry or unapproachable. Nevertheless, Saran's calm disposition shows through to those who talk with him.

Behavior

Saran enjoys talking with others, as he takes each encounter as a chance to learn and grow. He usually keeps his words straight and to the point, often coming across as blunt or naive because of a naturally trusting and honest nature. If he isn't speaking to others, he is often lost in thought, thinking about the way things work around him. He is quick to offer help or advice to others and comes across as a calm monk-ish type of person. He has a habit of humming to himself when thinking. His blindness causes him to attribute people and things to unique smells, taking in a persons' scent in order to "meet" them.

The flip side of this part of Saran is when he fights. He instantly becomes vigilant of all things around him, restricting his movements and words only to what is needed in the situation. He adopts a cold and ruthless outlook, seeing only him and his enemies. He loathes to deliver killing blows to his enemies, but will not hesitate if needed, preferring to bring an end to combat as quick as possible.
