About

A denizen of Aldenard hailing from the Tumet tribe of the Azim Steppe. Driven by certain misfortunes of her past, this Xaela woman forfeited her tribal name, going by arvankhoër, the number '12', and emigrated from her homeland in search of any means to turn the tide of her own imperfections. Over the course of her years dwelling abroad, influence from Eorzeans would have the syllables in her name evenly split to form a given name and surname - Arvan Khoer.

Physical Traits & Clothing

Edging the average woman of her age and race by a few inches in height, Arvan is possessed of a taut physique, weighing heavier than she appears even with her armor shed. Body lined densely with scales she takes regular care to trim, her posture is statuesque when the sheen of these scales are visible from beneath her clothing, though this is a relatively rare sight due to work circumstances.

Working primarily out of Coerthas, Arvan weathers the extreme cold of this Calamity-impacted region by wearing a thick glacial coat. In environments of mild or warmer weather, an ornate outfit paired with sandals minimize encumbrance for ease of movement. A pair of sheathed knives, one for gutting and another for butchering, are always bound to her thigh, solely for the benefit of field dressing. Wary of being stared at in public, she prefers to keep concealed the plate of scales leading up to her jawbone.

Only when burdened with hunting dravanians, Spoken, and large beastkin is Arvan ever seen donning a proper suit of armor. It has been denounced as causing her to bear 'too much resemblance to an aevis' with her tail visible, but to all intents and purposes keeps her well-guarded. Having noted the unrest among some who have seen the striking glare of her eyes, she sometimes wears a steel eye mask - but this gesture of consideration has also backfired with others who consider the concealment of facial features to be suspicious.

Voice

Arvan's voice can be referenced from that of Margaret (voiced by Michelle Ann Dunphy.)

Quirks

  • Capable of eating like an animal going into hibernation. Though her appetite is satiable, her stomach is still as mysterious as the Void. Those familiar tend to find amusement in the reactions of others being initiated to the sheer amount Arvan can consume.
  • Has a distinct speech pattern, slow as if unconfident of her own words. She often uses odd and misplaced formality that has also served to keep her out of trouble. As she is illiterate and still communicates by translating words from her mother language in her head, her word use can be somewhat stiff.
  • Prone to staring if she finds something appealing about you (typically a piece of armor or jewelry,) but her 'resting bitch face' tends to create misunderstandings. Her admiration of someone is always pure, never misguided.

A lone wolf by mere preference, Arvan has trouble forging close bonds on her own, but openly treasures those whom she senses acceptance from. Her confidence is limited to self-preservation, but she strives to better her own strengths in order to extend protection to those of whom have requested it. Her most restrictive yet well-founded insecurity is inability to shoulder the burden of responsibility over other lives. Not nearly as stern and proud as she tends to come off as, she has a tolerant, open mind, seeking understanding of all things novel. At times, she demonstrates thoughtfulness with the most unexpected of approaches. Having been a petty, perfectionist crybaby in the past, Arvan is slowly learning to celebrate triumphs of all proportions - though there remains a rare impish and childish quality to her that she may never grow out of.

Her hardiness and stubborn qualities make her comfortable with solitude, but rarely obvious is how easily affected she is on the emotional front. A tendency to miss social cues can also have her failing to read situations as is appropriate of most: her general oblivion towards the confidence people vest in her contributes to untimely absences when her strengths are required of her. Despite her muted kindness, she has few heroic qualities, being somewhat unreliable as an '11th hour hero'.

She is known to occasionally exhibit 'territorial' behavior, being stubbornly watchful of those she is fond of. Her competitive retaliation can come as a surprise to any and all that dares insult the pride of her and hers. Prone to stalking and striking when least anticipated, the scale of damage caused by her acts of vengeance can sometimes be exaggerated to a comical extent.

Prior to the Rite (Childhood)

Arvan was born as the second child to aged parents. As a child of the Steppe she was as regular as any, but was known for having an unnatural appetite. A gifted spear-fisher from the get-go, she was adored by her older brother, who was one of the tribe's most promising warriors. In time, it came to the attention of tribal shamans that without any guidance whatever, she seemed in some measure capable of bidding her own aether to augment the strength in her limbs, though her ability to control output was downright abysmal. When asked how she achieved such, she would testify to being 'so hungry' she had clenched her gut, stamped her foot out of petulance, and next thing she knew she'd 'woken up exhausted'... inside a small crater on the floor.

As things would have it, Arvan would eventually succeed with the tribal rite of passage. Freeing herself from her bindings with ease and reuniting with her tribe in the span of three weeks, she earned herself the name Tsolmon Tumet. By then already a lauded champion of the hunt, it was during her very first (and last) Naadam event that she became overzealous in her fighting, causing her brother to lose his right eye to an enemy arrow in the process of covering for her. Though he refused to hold her accountable, her sense of responsibility led her to become inseparable from him, and she openly vowed to act as his missing eye. Still, in all her zeal and proven inability to look after others, another accident during a beast hunt would cause her brother to sustain lasting damage to his spine, rendering him crippled. In a short amount of time, the tragedy of plummeting from a well-feared Tumet horseman to a useless paraplegic would drive him into deep despair.

Arvan would plead with her brother not to take his own life for all the shame suffered by the family. Convinced she had 'robbed the tribe of one of its finest warriors', she would renounce her name as a Tumet and request extended leave from the tribe until the day she might return as a someone capable of being in control of her own faculties - capable of being an asset, not a detriment, to her and hers. It is also during this leave that she will travel in search of some means - any means - to restore her brother's command over his own body.

Romantic Interest Platonic Love Good Standing Poor Standing

- Tsukimi Mizuno: A Doman Raen who is close to her in age. Arvan's love for her is subdued and expressed from a respectful distance, as if Tsukimi might be fragile to her touch. Misunderstandings have been caused among outsiders as Arvan chooses to address Tsukimi as 'my Lady' in public, leading many to assume Arvan's relation to her is one of servitude.

- Zarga: Arvan Khoer's beloved older brother. In the distant past, he was gifted as a warrior in every sense of the word, once even acquiring his tribe’s permission to bring his baby sister into the Naadam strapped on his back to show her the glory of the battlefield. Needless to say, he capably preserved his and his sister’s lives throughout the event, giving her the spectacle of a lifetime, and the strong aspiration to one day become like him.

- Shaar Jhungid: A former member of the Jhungids who treated Zarga as his nemesis, Shaar discarded his enmity upon hearing that his mortal enemy had lost an eye, and even went as far as donning an eyepatch to honor the latter. When Arvan left the Tumets, it was at Zarga's earnest request that Shaar accompany her journey, despite Shaar never having liked Arvan to begin with. Over time, watching her slow and gradual growth has softened his opinion of her, and he now regards her with an almost paternal care. Though she loves him as her own brother as well, Arvan recognizes that his cunning nature makes him unfit to be a moral compass to be relied on, even if he only means the best.
