Although he has a petite build often seen among female Auri, Sora is taller than average for his kind, with a willowy and voluptuous silhouette that greatly contrasts his inner masculinity. His deathly pale complexion is another feature rarely seen among Xaelas, where darker skin tones are more common. A literal reincarnation of Snow White sans his silver-blond hair, which he keeps it short in a flyaway style that brings out his coolness more than his feminine beauty. Sora has heterochromatic eyes—the left being pale green, and the right being light blue. Both are enclosed with silver limbal rings that give off a mysterious luminescence to his already unearthly appearance. With a slight rosy hue on his pale cheeks and a nice pink for his thin lips, it is no wonder why Sora is often troubled by his apparent femininity that he is trying hard to reject. Sora’s sense of fashion used to begin with a wardrobe disaster, where he simply put on anything he could grab at dirt-cheap price from the market boards when he first started his adventures across Eorzea. Since then, as time goes by and he encounters various people throughout his journey, he has developed a more coherent personal glamour collection with better gears obtained from higher difficulty dungeons. However, one will notice something in common across most of his glamour sets, especially the monochromatic color theme that shows his preference for black and white.

According to official papers kept at the barracks of the Grand Companies, I’sora Amariyo is stated to be born on the Fifteenth Sun of the Third Umbral Moon, hailing from the home city of Gridania. He was originally affiliated with the Archers’ Guild as a monster hunter, which in turn led to being a regular supplier to the Leatherworkers’ Guild by providing the source materials obtained from controlled hunting (as their guildmaster, Geva, was adamant about the balance of the ecosystem for the sustainability of natural resources). Although it wasn’t a lot to spend on luxuries, it was a steady source of income to live a humble life… except it wasn’t enough to quell his curiosity for the world beyond the woods. To him, the seemingly tranquil canopy was nothing more than a suffocating shelter, the negative feeling further fueled by prejudices that the people had towards him due to his past. A year later, after he had saved up enough gil, he left Gridania for Limsa Lominsa.
Originally hailed from the Ninth, Sora’s homeland was destroyed near the end of the Sixth Astral Era (the prelude that eventually led to the beginning of the Seventh Umbral Era), which took their Warriors of Light with the disaster and left nothing behind except for a handful of lucky souls. Sora, who had only seen ten summers at that time, was one of them. Ushered into a strange device he was too young to comprehend, the group of survivors were hastily teleported somewhere—except the procedure was a rushed one without prior preparation, and so the transfer did not work as intended. An insane amount of aetheric energy was required to complete the teleportation magic, but where would they get that during the long journey across the stars? By the time Sora had reached the Source, he was the only survivor as the rest of the crew was sacrificed and reduced to aether, while a portion of the child’s energy was sapped for the same reason, de-aging him to the form of a baby.
The future seemed bleak for the infant refugee with no place he could return to, but a ray of hope managed to shine through the darkness when he was picked up by a Sharalyan Miqo’te lady—a Keeper of the Moon by the name of I’suca Amariyo. Although an Astrologian like Urianger Augurelt and Leveva Byrde, I’suca was no saint; rather, she was similar to Matoya, the mentor of Y’shtola Rhul, where she left the institution and lived a life of isolation to continue her own studies and research on Astromancy. It was a mystery to Sora as much as to everyone else why the callous I’suca, who did not even care about the Seventh Umbral Calamity that happened later on, would be willing to take in an orphaned child. Maybe she knew that Sora was no ordinary baby given how beings from different worlds would have different aether density, or maybe she finally felt some sentiment and a need for companionship later in her life—regardless, Sora loved I’suca as a mother. Even so, there were times he would question himself about his relationship with I’suca, especially with respect to the strange looks of pity he would receive from those in their neighborhood. He was unsure of the details of I’suca’s research other than her interest—or perhaps obsession—for the study of aetherial manipulation; to her, Sora was the key to the breakthrough in her theories.
