Character
Sail Renacer is a player character in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. A recent arrival in Limsa Lominsa, she can most often be found occupying tables in the quietest of corners -- nose buried in books and quill in hand.
Appearance and Personality
Sail has a modest build, for a Midlander, standing at only 63.5 ilm. Her eyes are an odd heterochromic mix -- one shining seaglass green and the other glowing golden-brown -- and are framed on either side by locks of wavy dark-brown hair which falls past her shoulders. A solitary traveler, she is usually seen concealed in frumpy layered and hooded cloaks; beneath these her wardrobe is exotic and eclectic, utilizing garments from varying cultures typically for function rather than form -- the chosen material almost always being muted and low-key in color.
Personality-wise, Sail is complicated, introverted, maladjusted and wears a thick shell to boot. Most who would pass in and out of her life would think her terse stoicism -- her cool glare and flat tone -- as blinding arrogance or cruel apathy. In truth, she simply has little experience with inter-social exchanges and most often sees them either as dangers or distractions. As such, she spares minimal effort on the little lies and artificially provided empathy that much of the world around her seems expectant of, opting instead for undecorated truth and brevity. However, to those genuine, charming or interesting enough to crack her shell, Sail is a dedicated friend, and although her cynicism and awkward social poise do not suddenly vanish granted their audience, a desire to please and be accepted can be observed.
Sail's most prominent fault would be her tendency to focus every bit of her energy -- every thought and fiber of her being -- toward a singular outlet. When her sights are on something, everything else falls to the wayside. When she enters this state she becomes volatile, irritable and aggressive; single-mindedly pursuing the object of her focus. This practice favors her when she finds success, but when a failure of planning or execution occurs -- even in ways only she perceives -- it leaves her prone to an incapacitating, withdrawn depression.
History
Early Life
Sail hails from a tiny island hamlet off the southeastern coast of the Black Shroud. Born in 1557 to an unwed mother, Keaira Brewer -- an apothecary who, only months before Sail's birth, had fled Ul'dah in order to escape the claws of a small-time, but villainous, Elezen merchant; one whom, patience drawn thin, would offer forgiveness for her debts, but only on the grounds that he be granted the life of her child. Unwilling to give in to this demand, Sail's mother took to the hot, stone streets of Ul'dah, pleading with any who would listen to take her away from the city-state. It was by these means that she would eventually meet Stout, a kindhearted and honest Hellsguard clad in filthy clothes and hefting two armfuls of rolled hempen fabric. Stout consoled Keaira and told her of a hamlet where he himself had only a few years prior been invited to make his home -- a small, temperate island about three days' trip away, at the mouth of the Vugr'am River; a place blanketed mostly in conifer forest, but with small clearings of rich soil where he raised farm and livestock. The one who'd previously invited him, he went on, was an accomplished and gentle Hyur mage -- an old hermit by the name of Aerom Renacer. Not without her doubts, but seeing no other option, Keaira returned home, packing what little of her own she could carry and accompanied Stout back to the island -- just as he had described. Two months later, under the 16th Sun of the 4th Astral Moon, Sail was born.
A sickly child, she was oft left in the care of Aerom, who came to care for her as he would a favored granddaughter. On more than one occasion his seldom-used magic would for days be all that kept the tiny, fevered child breathing, whilst Keaira and Stout traveled in search of that with which to brew tonics and other remedies. Despite her frailness, Sail thrived in the environment in which she grew up, developing early a penchant for curiosity and exploration -- one which Stout was all too happy to entertain with various games and activities. The small family of vagabonds led a happy life in their isolation.
It was on Sail's fifth birthday that Aerom emerged from his hut with an old, well-kept grimoire, called for an audience with Sail and his counterparts, and performed the summoning of the spirit Carbuncle. Sail was immediately taken with the small, mammal-like entity, clapping her hands together and marveling joyously while her mother and the Roegadyn looked on. Kneeling beside his familiar, the old man met its gaze and spoke something softly. In that moment a blinding light appeared to erupt from its body, and when it faded, the faintly glowing creature seemed to have vanished. Just as Sail's brow began to furrow in confusion a small sound drew her attention to the ground at her side, and there, staring up at her with gleaming black eyes before giving her leg a catlike rub of its cheek, had the creature reappeared -- now bound to her, by her side it would remain.
As she grew into adolescence, Aerom began tutoring Sail on a variety of subjects; educating her in the ways of the world she knew and beyond, as well as sating her growing interest in his aetherial magic -- his reluctance to practice such ostensibly falling away as time went on. Sail loved learning, and her mind developed quickly; it was not long before Aerom was lending her his stories and tomes, or before she was wielding intermediate spells on her own and communicating with and controlling her familiar as though it were second-nature. Seeing this potential; watching her magical aptitude continue to improve, Aerom became fascinated. He began to dedicate more and more of their of their time to tutoring her in the arcane arts. By her tenth year of life, he had taken her formally as his apprentice, in the process causing a quiet rift to form between himself and the pair, Keaira and Stout, who whispered concerns that it would serve Sail better to focus on the more mundane but practical virtues of traditional education. It was during this time, with Aerom, that Sail left the island for the first time in her life.
Aerom's Apprentice
"You will wind up alone in the end. Everyone does. There is nothing individual about that." - Aerom Renacer
In one day, everything Sail had come to know throughout her short life vanished over the horizon; everything except Aerom. For the following three years, the two of them traveled side-by-side across southern Eorzea, never venturing north of the Vugr'am or beyond the shores of the Rhotano. It was during these years that Sail, through rigorous mental and practical training, gained most of her command over the arcane arts, as Aerom ceaselessly tried her abilities and granted unto her an expansive -- if perhaps biased -- knowledge of the history and purpose behind their arts.
To the young girl, their travels were not arduous, but whimsical, as Aerom's magic nigh-effortlessly quelled any threat the sands of Thanalan could level at them, and his reputation seemed to precede him in every settlement they visited; their first arrival in bustling Ul'dah seeing their escort intercepted and personally welcomed by direct representatives of the Syndicate, a tense exchange following. Waiting inside their carriage, Sail was always an outsider during these moments. Never even introduced by name, she would drift away into daydreams until Aerom returned to her, his business concluded.
Sail was still only a student -- fifteen years old -- when talks of the Garlean Empire's rapid advance and Dalamud's descent began to consume the populace. During this chaotic time, Aerom committed himself to helping the outlying settlements of Thanalan prepare for the worst. Sail assisted in his efforts to the best of her abilities, more often than not her contributions involved being sent on her own to make simple deliveries, distribute orders, and perform other similarly menial tasks. When the night of the Battle of Carteneau -- the Calamity -- finally came, Sail was resting in a small campsite under the guard of a handful of Immortal Flames. She would soon join countless others across Eorzea in losing nearly everything to Bahamut's rage.
A small band of soldiers approaches the decimated, still-smoldering remains of the travelers' rest. Face-stinging dust fills the air; the sands themselves still restless following the carnage days prior. The solemn-faced men and women move with singular purpose: closure. For the families of their comrades, they've come to identify the dead.
Off to one side, from within the piled rubble, a faint, blue glow catches the narrowed eyes of their commander.
"Look, there, did anyone see-... What is that? I-... Oh, Gods have mercy. It's her... she's still alive. Help me with this."
