Character

"Squandered is the potential of many, yet limitless is the potential I command. For Ishgard and Eorzea, let my efforts resound far and wide."

General:

With a passing glance, Varis Calder commands the discipline and strength of all those who were brought up in Ishgard’s knight orders were known for. It is easy to see the armor that he boasts and the gaze that he displays beneath it and believe him a cold, insufferable fool that sees only through the direction set upon him by the Archbishop, but that illusion is quickly discarded when taking more than a look as beneath the focused and goal-driven exterior that the heart within is bright and ready to protect the lands he calls home from whatever evil may bear down on it next.

Name:

Given Name: Varis Calder Siberys
Nicknames and Aliases: Throughout his travels, Varis has often been called knight but more appropriately, he is regarded with disdain by his fellow Dragoons that recognize him.

Appearance:

Among the men and women born to the high levels of Ishgard, Varis stands among many of the tallest Midlanders Ishgard has to offer. There is a look about the man that leaves many of the races taller than him not truly believing that he is looking up to them, but rather staring into the eyes of an equal, a means of social superiority that comes from a lifetime of living among Ishgardian's elite. Regardless, this is not to say that the man's life has been reflected upon his body a lifetime of comfort and privilege. The man's body is a canvas for a lifetime of battle, carrying with it several scars that mar the surface, criss-crossing and slicing their way through the soft coloring of his skin.

Ishgardians are said to carry with them a stringent focus on serious topics and look down upon everyone around them, at least by some people, and it is easy to see where this stereotype comes from when looking upon Varis' face. His grey eyes rest in a fashion that almost leaves them appearing in a constant glare, as if judging the world around him almost constantly. Other soldiers might recognize the look Varis carries with him as a curse that many soldiers that have seen too many battles often are plagued with for the rest of their days: a look born from watching countless allies and companions be cut down like lambs to the slaughter. Resting above his sullen eyes is a heavy brow that only adds to the idea of the glare, low eyebrows adding to mystique of his true feelings and thoughts of any given situation. The overall shape of Varis' face is sharp and reflects good breeding with high cheekbones and a features that have burned away baby fat from his cheeks. A long, slightly pointed nose adds to the clear image of his well bred lineage, giving his face a more pleasing appearance than the fat, rounded noses so many Midlanders boasted. As if to sum it all up, Varis' jaw is perhaps one of the few attributes that people have become accustom with as he remains within his suit of armor: a strong, sharp end to the angular features of his face besieged by a scar that trails along the left side of it and lips that often remain tilted downwards at one side.

A Knight is nothing without his arms and armor, and even less without a body trained to perfection to wield the tools of war. Varis' body is not as bulky nor broad as many of the knights trained to defend the lives of nobles or the shieldwardens of the world, but what the man lacks in bulk he makes up for in a lithe musculature that is a perfect highway for his Aether to burn through his body. While not bulky, Varis' body is, without a doubt, trained to what perfection he can manage on his own, fueled by a desire for reclaiming his honor. Any impurities the man's body boasted when he remained within Ishgard have since been cut out by the stark change in lifestyle wandering the wastelands of Coerthas leaving behind a scarred, muscled build meant for the singular purpose of performing his penance to The Holy See.

Speech:

Learned and taught throughout his life, Varis forgoes the slang and friendly drawl that so many of his people carry with them for a manner of speech that reflects his intentions and gets his point across with ease. The voice itself is collected and quiet with just a touch of the brutal intensity an Ishgardian knight is to command. There are many who would hear the man speak and assume that his demeanor comes from a boiling rage just beneath the surface, but those of social graces, living with a knack for talking with other people, might glean that the man's nature is nothing of the sort. Instead, Varis' demeanor, as harsh as it can be or as distant, stems from his own fear of affording others the closeness he once shared with his comrades, a fear of being betrayed once again.

Behavior:

The edge and strict attitude of Ishgard have begun wearing thin from the man as the years have drawn on in his quest throughout to reclaim his honor but have not been truly abandoned. Even still it is easy to see in the way that he treats individuals that there is still slight disdain for lower class citizens and his “lesser” but Varis has made grand improvement throughout his travels and through the blood that he has painted the Dravanian-afflicted countryside with: his own and the evils’ that he has faced in his trials. While the man may have a stringent lock and key upon negative emotions in attempt to mingle and meld with the people he encounters in a better manner, Varis cannot help but appear somewhat aloof or disinterested, even when showing a friendly side to him in the midst of conversation. He is easy to overlook in social situations when his interest is elsewhere.

All of these things are abandoned and cast off as soon as battle becomes apparent. The guidance of Ishgard returns to Varis in a flash as he bolsters the will and drive of his fellow soldiers by screaming praises of their looming victory to the skies, inspiring those around him to raise their swords and shields and join him in the fight. In the midst of battle, Varis continues on and holds himself to a standard that sets him apart from those around him, using his own actions and body as an inspiration for his fellow soldiers with the hope that they will see his actions, his vivacity, and his tenacity and swell their hearts with pride and courage.

Few have chipped away at the armor that surrounds the man, looking at him as little more than a wandering knight, but Varis’ loyalty knows no bounds and is as unwavering as the mountains. There is nothing that Varis loathes more than betrayal, believing the offense to be an unforgivable one. He believes that his life was granted to him so that he may give it back to Eorzea, as all who were raised within the bountiful gardens of House Siberys believe. In the question of relationships, Varis is a man of whimsy and hard to tie down, a reclusive spirit ever since his dishonor at the hands of comrades. He believes that one day there will be a soul out there to whom he will give himself completely, but he believes there is a long journey laying before him that takes priority.

Motivations: Honor, Glory, Renown, Legend, Pride, and seeing Eorzea live another day.
Disposition: Calm, polite, friendly, distanced, and collected.
Outlook: It is my responsibility to do what I can to live up to the legends of House Siberys and carve out my own. I will not be forgotten.

Positive Personality Traits:

Confident, sympathetic, heroic, intelligent, charismatic, upfront, loyal, level-headed.

Negative Personality Traits:

Aloof, superficial, prideful, conceited, glory-hound, obsessive, altruistic.

Combat:

There are so many that claim the name of Dragoon as their own, but there are so many who find the concept of leaping into the battlefield as alien even while brandishing spear and mail as if it were an extension of themselves. Varis underwent extensive training within the divine halls of Ishgard for the greater part of his young life, forcing himself to master the basics and to fully control his own Aether to make the death-defying leaps that a Dragoon does without thought possible. Like an artist with his paintbrush, Varis is a savant in the artistry of maneuvering through the battlefield without pause. Trained to hone in on the threats at hand, Varis always seeks the greatest challenge set before him and ignores everything else in lieu of the potential fight to end all fights.

In terms of spear-wielding, Varis favors a style of combat that uses the length of his weapon to his advantage, always keeping his opponents out of reach where they are forced to watch from afar as he tears them to shreds with the claws of the dragon. Like a fantastical ballroom dance, the battlefield is nothing more than a paired waltz with its own unique, haphazard, and chaotic tune that all the soldiers and combatants of the world move to. Varis takes this dance and applies his own steps to it, becoming a master at the too-and-fro motion with whatever dancing partner he finds himself accompanying in his battles. Rather than blindly weaving through battle dodging and parrying everything that comes his way, Varis is patient enough to wait for the perfect time to strike and utilize the full length of his spear to his advantage but it is not uncommon to find the dishonored man accepting gushing wound and cleaving cuts to get in close and end the battle before it even begins.

For the battlefield, there are few soldiers more feared than Ishgard's mighty Dragoons, their mounted cavalry. Without such training, no man could ever claim to be a true Ishgardian Knight. Varis learned at a young age to roam astride a Chocobo without fail, and eventually learned to take this a step further in terms of learning to fight atop the mighty birds. While a Chocobo may not boast some of the unique qualities of a horse or other breeds of steed, there are few creatures more loyal and ferocious than the partners Ishgard's cavalry take into battle.

With war, morale plays the biggest part in the battle. The smallest army could overtake the most legendary and well trained heroes with ease should their hearts beat together with a strong fire, and Varis believes in this completely. Even while fighting and taking on challenges that could leave him very much torn asunder, Varis manages to voice his appreciation and whatever words of courage he can muster to keep the spirits of his comrades high. While the battlefield may end up painted red regardless of encouragement, few who serve alongside the Dragoon argue against his methods and many even begin to feel a sense of invincibility alongside him as their spirits bolster to new heights.

Aether is a mysterious thing and it is no question that those who utilize its gifts need to keep their emotions in check, for they may risk unleashing a power that even they cannot control. Varis is no different and has tastes the sour fruit of rage many times before, unleashing a torrent of anger that flowed like water bursting through a dam. Under the siege of battle, Varis must contain himself and ensure that he doesn't lose his focus, ensuring that the right amount of Aether is expended for his abilities otherwise the battle will be over before it began for him and perhaps even for his opponent should his passions run rampant enough.

Relationships:

Family:

Orrick Morys Halstein Siberys: Crippled. Raised by the tyrant Avere Siberys, Orrick’s upbringing was not a simple one. From the age he could hold a lance, he was training to take the helm of House Siberys and usher in a grand new age for the House. Avere raised Orrick with the stringent focus of creating the perfect Dragoon that would take the mantle of Azure Dragoon and bring honor to their family forevermore, regardless of the strife and agony it would bring upon Orrick. The Eye never resonated for Orrick and Avere retreated into solitude, leaving Orrick to handle the affairs of House Siberys. In the same manner that Orrick was raised, Avere Godwin Siberys and Varis Calder Siberys were raised with the same mentality, bringing nothing but their father’s disappointment.
Lyanna Ylessa Siberys: Alive. A strong and terrifying dragoon turned mother upon marrying Orrick Siberys. Her terror was not in her strength nor her skill but rather in her unwavering tenacity that would leave her struggling to stand and continuing to fight even when others collapsed and gave in.

Avere Godwin Siberys: Alive. Varis’ older brother and self-proclaimed “Hero of Ishgard.” Rather than following the teachings and techniques of the Dragoons before him, Avere brandishes sword and shield in the fight against dragons. His most notable accomplishment was the first dragon slain at his hand to which he took the plate of its skull and uses it now as his shield.
Edgar Malcolm Cecil Siberys: Alive. A frail and sickly boy, Edgar is a year younger than Varis and took to the teachings of books and scrolls rather than fighting dragons like his siblings. Out of all of the sons of Orrick Siberys, Edgar has strove to win the affections of his family through brain rather than brawn and has been named Orrick’s successor, much to Avere’s displeasure.
Nicia Brianna Siberys: Alive. The youngest out of all of Orrick’s children and by far the most terrifying. When she was born, Lyanna saw to it that Nicia would not be a frail princess left to dote upon other warriors as they ran off to battle. By the time she passed through the gateway to adulthood, the woman was a beauty that few Hyur in Ishgard matched. Although, no suitor dared to step forward, too afraid of the dagger-woman and none courageous enough to brave the volatile woman’s fury.
Avere Nedrick Siberys: Alive. Father to Orrick Siberys and the man who redefined the status quo of House Siberys. Rather than simply accepting the fact that there would always be someone better than him, Avere took a small band of dragoons and took the fight to the dragons. When the men left they were full of hope and brimming with courage. What returned, however, was nothing more than hardened warriors with a grim disposition ready to conquer all those who stood before Ishgard. While the stories may have grown to be far out of proportion, it is said that the company of men slew two hundred dragons in the year they were gone.

Note: House Siberys dutifully serves House Haillenarte.

Kura Tenshi: A strange woman Varis met in Coerthas' Whitebrim Fort. He knows little about the woman other than the fact that she's a passionate heart and perhaps something of an idealist. Whether or not some sort of friendship blooms from the chance meeting is beyond him, as the few souls that he encounters that have any real substance are often as fleeting as footprints in the snow.

History/Timeline

1550, Sixth Astral Era: Born to Orrick Siberys and Lyanna Siberys.
1555, Sixth Astral Era: Nurtured primarily by Lyanna Siberys, told tales of the heroic Dragoons of old all to improve desire to become a legend in his own right.
1556, Sixth Astral Era: Orrick Siberys began training Varis under the guise of playing “Slay the Dragon.” Taught by Orrick Siberys the history of Ishgard and the importance of their existence, reaffirming that Varis would become a legend among Ishgardians.
1557, Sixth Astral Era: Ser Alberic meets Nidhogg in combat. Orrick’s training intensifies and Varis begins believing the propaganda that he would become a hero like no other. Varis begins spouting to both friends and family alike that he would become the next Azure Dragoon.
1560, Sixth Astral Era: With the world thrown into chaos, Orrick Siberys left to help combat the evils that bared down upon them. During this time, Lyanna hired an instructor to teach both of her sons in both the military traditions of Ishgard and in the proper techniques of their Dragoon heritage.
1562, Sixth Astral Era: Avere Godwin Siberys abandons his original instructor in lieu for a more refined, younger instructor who would push him to his true potential. Rather than abandoning his teacher like his brother, Varis continues to train with Ser Quentyn Reeve. With a strong influence on the basics, Varis pulled ahead of his brother who now served under the tutelage of a less experienced knight.
1564, Sixth Astral Era: Mastering the basics and proving capable in preforming the techniques that were heirlooms to House Siberys, Varis began his cavalry training astride his first chocobo. With the turmoil in the world beginning to come to fruition, Varis strove to become greater so that he may one day be able to join the battles, make a difference, and write his own legend in the annals of history.
1568, Sixth Astral Era: Battered and crippled, Orrick Siberys returns to Ishgard with a heavy heart and forced into retirement. In much the same way as his father before him, Orrick retreated to his chambers and hardly came from them.
1568, Sixth Astral Era: Varis, now a man, has pulled ahead of his siblings in training and mastery of the techniques due to trust and steady progress under the tutelage of Ser Quentyn Reeve. Together, the two begin undertaking the preparations for sending Varis on his way to knighthood.
1571, Sixth Astral Era: After years of preparation and restless training and service, Varis undertook the most difficult battle of his life. A dreading exercise that pushed his body to its limits and nearly claimed him from his own fears and hesitations. Entering into combat as a man, Varis claimed victory with his heart steeled as a mighty Dragoon.
1572, Sixth Astral Era: With the conflicts around Eorzea boiling over, Varis took up arms with a small carde of dragoons to attempt to recreate the very same adventure his grandfather undertook before him. Throughout the year, the company of Ishgardian Knights slew dozens of dragons for The Holy See, no matter the insurmountable challenge before them. Pushed too far and wishing to return home, the company of dragoons left Varis for dead claiming the trophies of their turmoil and returned to Ishgard. Upon his return, Varis was met with scoffs and dishonor at every turn. Rather than continue to bring shame to House Siberys, Varis accepted his dishonor and pledged himself to a goal of penance, wishing to better himself in the eyes of The Holy See for the sake of redemption and being worthy to call himself his father's son. Without a word against the judgment of his betters, Varis was forced to live out his penance in the borderlands of Ishgard, traversing the snow swept cliffs and mountain tops in defense of his beloved home.

00, Seventh Umbral Era: On the eve of the tragedy that would later be known as the Calamity, Varis had taken up with a small band of soldiers that were also garrisoned on the borderlands of Ishgard. Without notable defenses, Varis and these soldiers were left to fend for themselves against the overwhelming hordes of monstrous creatures that fled their homes and lairs in absolute terror seeking some sort of safety elsewhere. Most of the garrisoned soldiers lost their lives by the never-ending waves of fiends that came crashing down upon them, and Varis only managed to survive by retreating back, unable to contend with the waves of monsters.
01, Seventh Umbra Era: In the year following the Calamity, Varis did what he could to aid the border towns of Ishgard, offering his skill as an "amateur" blacksmith, as he often referred to it. With whatever repairs were necessary and giving help to the garrisoned soldiers by repurposing and repairing their arms and armor, Varis garnered some vestige of acceptance by the men and women who lived out on the border.
02, Seventh Umbra Era: Rather than simply accepting the kindness and care that the citizens attempted to offer him in the wake of the Calamity, Varis' honor was not sated by his deeds. Instead, he quickly took up spear and Drachen Mail once again to roam the snowy cliffs and mountaintops in a constant vigil for the sake of Ishgard.
03, Seventh Umbra Era: In one of the small towns he ended up in, Varis received word of his brother's honor and the display of swordsmanship that he displayed at a tournament of sorts for the royalty of Ishgard. He found solace that at least one of his father's sons were capable of bringing honor to their House, regardless of his unorthodox manner of training and technique.
04, Seventh Umbra Era: Having traveled across most of Coerthas with his chocobo and only companion, Varis was distraught when he was forced to flee from a skirmish with a mighty dragon at the cost of his only remaining friend, Alusair.
05, Seventh Umbra Era: Begrudgingly, Varis finally accepts the ownership of another chocobo, finally ending his mourning of his lost companion. He names his ally Cormyr after a Dragoon his father told him stories of. Rather than becoming the Azure Dragoon, Cormyr lived a life of sacrifice and tenacity, ending with sacrificing his life for the sake of the friends he cared so much for.
06-07, Seventh Umbra Era: Varis has begun sending letters to his sister Nicia in secret under the penname Gylbart Lancaster. He couldn't truly handle being completely cut off from his family anymore, missing the closeness he shared with his sister and the meager rivalry he shared with his brother. He even began missing the stern and curt methods of his father. Regardless, Varis remained in Coerthas, roaming the borderlands and still seeking penance. Regardless of how many dragons he may slay in service to The Holy See, nothing ever seemed quite enough to truly allow him to believe he was redeemed in the eyes of Ishgard. It would take a disaster of great need to bring him back to the illustrious and beautiful halls of his home.
