Yuzeh considers her to be the only person that's ever really loved him, past and present. Many in the tribe disliked him simply because of his father. Coupled with the lack of a real father figure, Yuzeh grew to somewhat resent his father and started acting more independently and cause trouble.

Yuzeh is young and cared deeply for his mother, and is unable to deal with the fact that he was responsible for his mother's death. Instead, to cope, he blames his father for not doing enough to protect her, for not caring about her, his behavior, and such. Upset and angry, Yuzeh runs away and starts living alone. Betrayed many times and struggling to survive made him very independent but also very distrustful of others. At about the age of 15, something happens that causes him to join the Garleans, which he's able to do despite being young. He'd grown to hate Gyr Abania, Ala Mhigo, and its people from his experiences. Ever since that griffin killed his mom, as griffins symbolized Ala Mhigo to him. So getting the chance to get revenge on them was a plus, but life was very different and not what he expected. He'd already been doing bad things so things like killing wasn't too new to him, though doing so much more of it desensitized him to it. Taking orders was new, but he didn't have a choice in the matter. He had to either follow without question, or would be killed without mercy.

Luckily, Aoi survives the encounter, meets his wife Eiai, and gets an invitation from Hizu to join the Collective. Aoi doesn't really care about some "greater purpose" or following orders, but decides to take him up on the offer for the possible entertainment and free stuff. Since then, Aoi has continued to cause trouble for the Collective.
