Things Left Behind

Kaldius rarely speaks of his family or where he's from. He was once a member and the next heir of the clan of Xaela known as the Dehimoq. The people of his clan were violent in nature and generally avoided the politics of the rest of the Auri peoples. Their avoidance of traditions was mostly in part to the development of their own, more twisted and darker traditions. These dark traditions were likely what led to their demise. Because very little records were ever known to be kept of this clan, the only truly known fact is what has been reported by Kaldius himself, "They're all dead. Had it coming, too, probably."

When Kaldius discovered he was the last of the Dehimoq, he decided to travel to Ul'dah and make a life for himself there. When registering his identity paperwork, Kaldius put his family name down as "Villanite," a word that could only be assumed, at the time, to have significance to Kaldius alone.

Time in Ul'dah

Upon his initial arrival in Ul'dah, Kaldius decided to spend his time primarily in the Quicksand. It was here where he met two women who introduced themselves as Mina and Nova. The married couple was discussing an encounter with a traveling gladiator and the possibility of making him an offer. Under the impression that this involved gil, Kaldius spoke to the women and offered his services over those of the gladiator they had previously met. The two took a liking to him and after a short interview, they revealed their true motives to him.

Kaldius' main motivation to reject the offer came from their desire to have him serve their own lord. After recently acquiring a reason to leave his clan behind, he was not particularly interested in their offer. The Auri was hardheaded and stubborn; serving someone else now was something he just couldn't get behind. This encounter did, however, set a perspective for him. As he made his way back to the Quicksand, he began asking himself what it was he wanted. These women had goals and desires; what was he doing? There he sat, in his tribal rags. Adventurers walked by him in silks and armor. Others with lesser equipment seemed to try to approach him, but his cold glare proved difficult to get around.

The Tank

One person did finally approach the man, however; a Raen female sat at his table with her gaze down. She was noticeably nervous to speak to Kaldius, and he took clear note of this, deciding to make it worse. He spoke roughly to her, and she responded quietly and kindly. Eventually, he discovered she was an aspiring healer and she needed strong companions to adventure with. Kaldius told her that he would join her under the condition that she admitted to darkness in her heart. She danced around the topic and eventually, Kaldius became frustrated, feeling that she was just too perfect. He dubbed her with the nickname of, "Doll" and left her alone that night.

What she didn't know was that Kaldius was not registered to any guild, not even the Adventurer's Guild; he was a traveler who knew how to fight and that was that. When he left, he visited the Gladiator's Guild and registered himself there. The next time he saw Elyra, he was ready to adventure with her an be her protector as she would be his healer. He wasn't one to do things for others generally, but something about Elyra interested him. So, he went to the Quicksand one night and found her there. When he approached her, he found her with new friends. She seemed as nervous and shy as before, but he eventually discovered she had joined a Free Company.

He had no real expectations from the girl, but something about this sat heavy on him. In his frustration, he began to show affection to Elyra in front of the man who had recruited her. The young recruiter had a crush for Elyra; information she had confided in Kaldius prior, along with an explanation that she was worried that she didn't know how to tell him she felt differently. Elyra barely reacted to his affections, locking up rather than returning or acknowledging them, and eventually, the other man left the Quicksand, likely tired of Kaldius' backhanded comments and physical contact with Elyra. Once his competition was gone, Kaldius effectively told Elyra to get ready for a trip. The meek girl had no fight in her at this point and began to get into the habit of traveling and adventuring with Kaldius.

The Healer

Elyra and Kaldius explored much of Thanalan together and eventually even made their way to La Noscea. During their travels, Kaldius often pushed Elyra's embarrassment and comfort to its limits. He would regularly make comments about her body or the bodies of other adventurers they encountered. He also had a vulgar mouth that she was not completely accustomed to. The Raen eventually, however, came to accept his behavior. Over time, she began making additional, countering, dismissive or even worse comments in return to his actions and words.

During this time, Elyra was still a member of the Blue Skies Free Company and eventually, her company mates reached out to her to return to Ul'dah for a small gathering. In passing, Kaldius mentioned a small desire to start his own Free Company. Elyra did not hesitate to tell him that he should do it and that she'd join. This only spurred him on more. Kaldius wasn't sure why, but this woman gave him a drive he had never quite felt before. Once they arrived back to Ul'dah, Elyra went to spend time with her company, bidding Kaldius a temporary farewell. He decided to make his way towards the company hall in Ul'dah. A small reputation had followed him here, however. Citizens and adventurers of Ul'dah would glance at him, and then mutter amongst themselves regarding rumors about the white-haired Xaela clad in purple armor. Some comments were regarding the discomfort he brought other adventurers, others regarded his favorite color. Most rumors, however, were of the monster that slew monsters. When Kaldius was in battle, he was reckless. He would draw the attention of all his enemies in an effort to seemingly feed either an uncontrollable bloodlust or, some kind of deathwish.

The rumors spread on to include Elyra. Some commented on the stress the poor healer had to go through, not only keeping up with his self-destructive behavior but, also the way he spoke to her. Many wondered why the mild-mannered healer was traveling with Prince Kaldius, Villanite of Dehimoq. Word had spread and so did suspicion. As Kaldius reached the company hall, a guard stopped him, asking Kaldius to follow. The Xaela was then questioned about the meaning of the name he registered under. Rumor had spread that the term, 'Villanite' was a title of shame that the Dehimoq used to refer to beings who had killed their own family. Whilst the rumor was true, Kaldius was the last remaining member of the Dehimoq clan, so he told the guards that this was a strange theory and that they were wasting his time. With nothing concrete except for rumors, a seemingly faulty translation, and a bit of gil for the guards, Kaldius soon found himself back at Costa del Sol, convinced that Elyra would no longer come to see him.

The next morning, a topless, shoeless and equipment-less Kaldius was woken up by Elyra a few meters away of the public dock of the port, where he had apparently passed out the night before. Elyra was in a bathing suit; something new to Kaldius, as she always wore more concealing clothing. She offered him food and healing for his hangover, then the two began talking. Once they found a secluded and safe area of the beach, Kaldius told her the truth about his family, and she eventually told him the truth about her feelings. The two did not leave the Costa del Sol for a week and a half after that; spending the time as newlyweds would. Upon their return to Ul'dah, Elyra visited her Free Company to inform them of her leave and Kaldius walked directly to the company hall, starting the paperwork to register his company until he realized that he needed two more people.
