Character

Backstory

Khachi was born the only daughter of the chieftain of the Satsumi Xaela tribe in the northeastern reaches of the Azim Steppe; a small, nomadic tribe that separated from one of the larger tribes several years before. With her mother killed during a hunt shortly after her birth, her father was left as the only parent to care for her as she grew up. Although he had been hoping for a son to take over as chieftain, Khachi's father loved and cared for her just the same.

From a young age, he trained Khachi in the traditional Satsumi way of the lance despite her gender and the negative views the Satsumi held toward females being trained for combat. A large part of her everyday life during her younger years were the hours spent training with her father, and most of Khachi's free time as a child was spent hidden away reading books the tribe acquired from Doman merchants. Her favourites were those of Eorzea, depicting Ishgardian dragoons and their struggle against dragons. That was where she became entranced and enamored by the mysterious, almost otherworldly dragonslayers- and she looked up to them, despite having never met a dragoon or even an Eorzean for that matter.

Prior to Khachi's father taking over as chieftain of the Satsumi, the tribe was widely known among the Xaela as being fierce lance-wielders always looking for their next tribal conflict. But her father saw a different future for the Satsumi, inspired by his younger days traveling far beyond the Far East; it was a future where peaceful interactions and trade with their fellow Xaela took priority above pointless bloodshed and competition. This lead to no small number of the more veteran Satsumi warriors, and in turn, many of the younger generation to despise the way he seemed to be leading the tribe. It didn't take long for that resentment to evolve into full-fledged hatred, especially as the Satsumi were openly mocked by others for their gradual decay from the hostile, battle-hardened tribe they once were.

It happened a few days following Khachi's twelfth nameday- shortly after dinner, her father was returning to the chieftain’s tent when he was surrounded by a group of masked lancers; unarmed and unable to defend himself. He was cut down on the spot before managing more than a few words, and left a bleeding, collapsed mess gutted in the middle of the group of lancers just as Khachi emerged from the tent, spear in-hand, for her nightly training regiment with her father.

The young Khachi was awarded the sight of her father's collapsed and blood-soaked form in the midst of the masked lancers just as they removed their masks, revealing themselves to be those many members of the Satsumi that had pined to see her father fall in favor of a more aggressive chieftain.

“Grab her. The others will want her to take his place when they find out, and I won’t have some pitiful child lead us even further into the ground.” One spoke while the others made to grab Khachi.

The death of her father hit Khachi hard. Fury raged through her form, and despite wanting to fight and kill her father's murderers, Khachi could do nothing but run. She couldn't hope to take on the tribe's best lancers on her own, and would only end up the gutted next to her father if she tried. The young Auri disappeared into the plains- abandoning everything and the people she used to consider family while images of her father's disgraced and bloodied form burned into her mind.

Eorzea

Khachi had no choice but to flee to the Imperial-ruled Doma, and spent moons on her own, betrayed by her tribe, and slandered as a terror that committed patricide against her own father in cold blood to take his place as chieftain. The Satsumi were constantly searching for her, and they had even enlisted the help of other Xaela tribes to bring her down. The Steppe was no longer safe, and Khachi feared that both Doma and Hingashi might prove to be dangerous as well. She was left with a fateful choice; await the day when she was hunted down by one of her own, or flee to somewhere the Satsumi could never touch her.

With nothing but her father's lance and a rusty suit of chainmail armor to her name, Khachi boarded a Lominsan trade ship bound westward from Kugane - paying for her fare by providing security and grunt work for the crew. She spent the first few moons after her arrival in Eorzea doing odd jobs and attempting to accustom herself with Eorzean culture- clearing pests from farms, providing security for caravans, delivering packages, and defending small settlements from beasts. Her travels and odd work brought her to Thanalan, but she was struggling, and it seemed every facet of Eorzea aimed to impede her. When it came down to it, she was still a child barely managing to cope with the bloody loss of her father and betrayal of all those she called family. And as a lone Auri child in a land she barely understood, and that barely understood her, the everyday threats were endless. She knew she needed a reliable income. Safety, security, and perhaps... A family.

The Immortal Flames

Khachi never expected to become a soldier when she first arrived in Eorzea, but soon enough, she realized that the work of an adventurer was too unpredictable and inconsistent to reliably make a living, and that if she wanted to get anywhere in this new world, she needed a reliable income and a safe place to reside. Being not even fifteen summers in age, Khachi lied about her age during enlistment to the Immortal Flames, and after basic training she was assigned to a moderately-sized unit tasked with patrolling and protecting Thanalan's furthermost reaches from Imperial insurgents, bandits, and Amal'jaa. It was there that Khachi bonded with others for the first time since she was forced to abandon her tribe; she became close with many of her fellow soldiers, enough to even call them friends. For once, she felt companionship and as though she belonged in Eorzea, and the horrible events from her childhood became diluted with her newfound friendships.

The Calamity

Nothing could last forever. Before long, Eorzea was presented with a threat that made the primals looks like jokes. The lesser moon, Dalamud, began inching closer and closer as time went on, and the ongoing war with the Garleans only grew worse. When the time to engage the Garlean Empire on the plains of Carteneau in a final effort to save Eorzea came, Khachi's unit was assigned as a forward assault group alongside a team of Serpent lancers and Maelstrom marauders. They engaged the Garlean threat head-on, unsure if their actions would spare Eorzea from the impending doom ... But Khachi didn't care. Eorzea was more a home to her than the the Steppe by that point, and she would do everything in her power to ensure its safety.

Before long, however, the small embers of hope for Eorzea's protection were crushed as the dreadwyrm Bahamut emerged from the shell of Dalamud while its shards rained down upon the realm. Soldiers; Garlean and Eorzean, fled in all directions as they tried to escape the fiery judgement of the primal. Khachi was frozen on the spot, unable to move even as her companions fled around her. A scream brought her out of the trance. Glancing around, she realized that flames were spreading across the battlefield, taking soul after soul with them. Her friends were no different. Khachi, frozen in fear and horror, could only watch helplessly as every last member of her unit was burned alive in their armour. The screaming of friends, allies, and enemies alike penetrated her mind. The heat, terror, and shock of what was happening had Khachi collapsing on the battlefield, soon trampled by those trying to escape the fiery judgement of Bahamut while flames scorched down the right side of her torso.

Khachi awoke several days later in a cold-sweat under the care of a Serpent conjurer. Her rightmost torso had been severely burned, her armour and weapons melted away like paper. One of the few to survive, the conjurer surmised that the bodies piled on top of her unconscious body formed served to shield her from the worst of the flames... But she was anything but not scarred, physically and mentally. Though the conjurer recommended that she rest for a while longer, Khachi couldn't even consider the thought. Every time she closed her eyes, her vision was filled with the burning forms of her allies ... Her friends whose very bodies were the only reason she still lived.

Khachi never truly recovered from the incident, and withdrew entirely from social situations even after she was discharged from the care of the Alliance's conjurers. For some time, she remained in the Immortal Flames' barracks, unsure of where exactly her life was supposed to go. Everything had been taken from her- her comrades, her friends ... And her family. Once again, she found herself in the same position she was in when she first arrived in Eorzea. A disheveled, lost girl with nowhere to turn. After some time, she started serving the Flames again and assisted with the many tasks needed to rebuild after the disaster, but no longer felt the sense of camaraderie she had come to expect. She had turned into an emotionless husk of her former self. The only shred of her original personality that remained was that undying respect and admiration of Ishgardian dragoons that she held since she was a child.

Current

Khachi is still loyally serving the Immortal Flames, however, she declines to join a particular unit full-time any time the opportunity arises. Fearful of companionship only to find loss, Khachi keeps to herself and is almost entirely silent. Since returning to active duty after her injury at the Battle of Carteneau, Khachi has been repeatedly offered a promotion to the ranks of the Flames' officers. However, due to her returned solitary nature brought back by the death of her comrades, Khachi rejects the promotions any time they arise, and remains at her current rank of Chief Flame Sergeant.

Alongside her traditional military service to the Flames, Khachi also does work as a Doman-Hingan translator for the Immortal Flames and Eorzean Alliance as a whole, and also does idle adventurer work as well.

After the loss she experienced during the Battle of Carteneau, Khachi withdrew herself from residing in the Immortal Flames barracks and acquired an apartment in The Sultana's Breath in The Goblet.

Having been separated from both her tribe and the Azim Steppe for so many years, Khachi has no knowledge on the current status of the Satsumi. Though part of her is curious as to the fate of her former tribe, she can't bring herself to travel back to the Far East, and fears what might take hold of her if she did happen to encounter them again. Curiosity does remain, however, and it is possible that she would inquire about her former tribe if she ever happened across somebody with recent knowledge of the Steppe.

Appearance

Khachi is a relatively short, lightly-built Xaela Au Ra with dark purple hair that, when down, trails down to her lower back. She usually wears it in a ponytail.

The right side of Khachi's body is horribly scarred from severe burns she suffered during the Battle of Carteneau. Though her face was spared, the burn begins just below her neck, along her right shoulder, and continues along her breast down to the beginning of her hip scales. Some smaller burn scars also remain along her right leg and arm. Despite the severity of the burns, muscle damage was limited, and hindrance to her mobility is minimal.

Personality

Khachi is a a silent and independent girl; refusing to rely on the support of anybody and preferring to keep to herself. She is extremely hesitant to bond or become close to anybody due to a fear of loss, and often appears emotionless and stale in conversation. Despite her exterior attitude, however, Khachi is still a teenage girl on the inside- one that is still trying to cope with the loss of her father and comrades.

Although it doesn't show and she certainly wouldn't discuss it openly, Khachi has a slight indirect suicide complex. A part of her wants to die, however, she refuses to do it herself or simply throw her life away in some meaningless conflict. However, if the right situation presented itself ...

In the event she were to meet either a commissioned dragoon in service to Ishgard, or a free dragoon, Khachi would become quite flustered and starstruck- much the contrary to her usual attitude.

Combat

Skills

Khachi is highly skilled in the use of lances, spears, and other types of polearms- both from a mounted position on a Chocobo or horse, and on foot, with the latter being her specialty. She invokes a unique fighting style taught to her by her father, which combines traditional Satsumi lancer techniques with techniques her father learned during his early years as a wanderer. Alongside her lance skills, Khachi is moderately skilled in the use of one-handed blades and daggers, yet lacks in experience with any type of magic, ranged weapon, or blunt weapon. She also regularly practices her hand-to-hand combat techniques, and is more than capable of fending off unarmed opponents and disarming assailants armed with various weapons.

Through her many engagements with varying types of Imperial units, Khachi is fairly experienced in combating Magitek armor of different types, and has tactics to deal with most Garlean soldiers and weaponry.

During her upbringing, Khachi became nearly fully fluent in Doman and Hingan, and also became mostly fluent in Eorzean during her transition to the West.

Gear

Though her gear and armor can vary depending on the environment and particular conflict she's involved in, Khachi prefers either plate or chain armor, and favourites a Wolfram set forged for her by one of the Immortal Flames' blacksmiths.

For her main weapon, Khachi usually carries a large, mechanical Obelisk spear that unfolds to reveal multiple blades when she engages in combat. At her side, she carries a Steel Falchion as a secondary weapon, and also has a Steel Dagger carefully hidden in the top of her right sabaton for emergencies. During extended deployments or when traveling, Khachi will also attach a basic rucksack to the back of her armor, and two pouches at either side of her cuirass. An Immortal Flames insignia can usually be seen on both pauldrons and her chestplate, depending on the armor she's wearing at the time.
