Born into one of the high houses of Ishgard, Alphonse Dzemael was a respected member of society. While the Elezen followed most of the social norms expected of him, Alphonse never shied away from his fondness of men, though it was mostly overlooked thanks to his heritage. Alphonse was also gifted with a keen sense of character, able to seemingly pick up on details that others would never have known. This was thanks to his one secret gift; the Echo.

Alphonse' Echo manifested itself when he was still little, though at the time it would come and go at random intervals. It was not until he became an adult that he learned to fully control it, teaching himself to focus and draw out it's power. Unike the Warrior of Light's Echo, Alphonse's allowed him to read the thoughts or intent of those around him, if only for a few brief moments. While useful in one on one engagements, it would always prove difficult to utilize the Echo in a crowded area, as it was hard to ascertain whose mind Alphonse was peering into.

The Echo proved useful on the battlefield as well, as Alphonse soon discovered when he joined the dragoons in defending Ishgard. It allowed him to predict the attacks of wyrms before they made them with near perfect results, and counter them accordingly. While initially wholly commited to defending the Holy See, after countless battles and close calls, Alphonse began to question if the war would ever end. He soon learned the truth of the matter after a chance encounter with Archbishop Thordan VII, where the Echo revealed a shade standing beside the Archbishop. This shade was in fact and Ascian, though Alphonse did not know of them, and merely saw this as the Archbishop under some sort of dark influence.

Unable to speak up on what he witnessed, in fear of revealing his Echo and being charged with heresy, Alphonse had decided the only thing he could was run away, as far as he could from Ishgard. Though being of House Dzemael meant he couldn't simply walk out the gates without being seen. During a battle in Coerthas against the Dravanian Horde, Alphonse persued a dragon alone, though once he had broken away from the other dragoons, the Elezen discarded his helm and threw it to the ground. He then slashed at it with his spear, before throwing his spear to the snow-covered ground as well.

Returning to Ishgard in secret, Alphonse waited until nightfall to sneak out of the city, only looking back once he had reached the Steps of Faith. Knowing he could never return home, he began to make his way out into the Eorzean mainland.
