Brief Background

Mykaul Valeroyant is a man who has had to build his own identity from the ground up. Bearing deep emotional scars, a frown comes much more easily to his face than a smile. Wandering the wilds of Mor Dhona as a child long before the Calamity struck, he learned to survive on wits and stealth. He knew nothing of family, his parents abandoning him at a very young age. It wasn't until his adolescence he encountered civilisation at Revenant's Toll. It was there he first learned the art of the sword.

He found his solitude to be something comforting, feeling embarrassed and ashamed by the criticisms he received from his other cadets. It was apparent to him that he was an outsider, and so he allowed himself to fall in that category, focusing on developing his own skill.

After the Calamity, it is clear he witnessed much tragedy in the changed lands. Events he does not speak of to many, he made the pilgrimage to Ul'dah, where he'd heard refugees could make a living and he could gain access to his true goal: knighthood. After meeting the man he loves now, he decided that he preferred the Gridanian atmosphere. He now shares citizenry between both Ul'dah and Gridania, feeling he can make changes for the better in both city-states. He is a member of the Bastion Company and works as both a bodyguard and a squire.

Appearance

Before now, Mykaul was a Duskwight with indigo hair with shocks of violet streaked through, styled in a spiked manner. His eyes then were a pale ice blue that could penetrate the soul. Now, his small eyes are still quite piercing, but since the failure to protect a Sylph colony, his looks have been altered due to a curse.

Now, Mykaul remains an incredibly tall Duskwight Elezen with sharp features. His lips, though plump, always seem to frown. His small green eyes are sooner to show suspicion than warmth, and his deep red hair hangs loosely at a medium length. He bears a sharp red goatee that makes his face seem longer.

In the rare occasions his torso can be well-seen, there are two sets of scars: one crescent of teeth covering his abdomen, past his center, and another matching set on his back, past the spine. Mykaul, despite his efforts to hide it, is still an incredibly attractive individual. He can often be seen in the metal armor of his profession, or proudly bearing leather in Gridania made by Kahn'a Od'hilkas.

Combat

Sword and Shield

Mykaul is one who believes he is capable of protecting the innocent front-and-center. His training first began in Revenant's Toll as a cadet fifteen years before the Calamity. He did not learn the true art until he made the trek to Ul'dah, however. In the Gladiator's Guild, he learned to effectively grab the attention of enemies and hold it. He is confrontational and aggressive in his fighting style. One could surmise he expresses his true level of rage when he fights. He has a constantly wandering eye on the field, ensuring his allies remain out of the line of fire. Even if he fails in grabbing his target's attention, he will spare no effort in eliminating the threat.

Axe

This is a new channel of combat for Mykaul. Through this avenue, he is able to express his inherent rage through every swing. Each sweep of the heavy blade comes with a shout loud enough to be mistaken for a beast. Yet when the axe stops swinging, his composure returns to its default stoicism. Through the axe, another side of Mykaul reveals itself and there seems something vulnerable and raw in his face with every battle cry.

Magic

Mykaul had heard rumours of how to achieve knighthood, even as he was barely scraping by as a Gladiator. This is what led him to first go to Gridania. Here, he learned the art of Conjury and discovered an affinity for the element of Air. Because of this, he is able to detect a falsehood spoken. He may not know the truth or what in a person's statement rings false, only that he is being lied to. Being a guardian by nature, Mykaul has harnessed the healing arts to further achieve his goals to protect the innocent.

Affiliation

Individuals

Kahn'a Od'hilkas

Possibly the most important individual in Mykaul's life, his typically stoic nature seems to shift into something softer and more open. This should not be considered weakness, however. In the end, Mykaul knows Kahn'a can care for himself, but he will cross the Seven Hells to rescue him anyway, and he never fails his goal.

Ignasse Arbeau

One Mykaul typically calls by his surname, the relationship between these two is purely professional. Mykaul guards Arbeau from unsatisfied customers, observing his employer's craftsmanship and becoming a novice himself. Arbeau, in return, pays Mykaul, though he seemed a tad uncomfortable about his relationship with Kahn'a initially.

Ru'aiken Nunh

The founder of Bastion, Aiken hired Mykaul upon hearing of his desire to protect the innocent and to become a knight.

Qata'to Jinjahl

From the beginning, this Miqo'te took Mykaul on as a pupil of sorts. Mykaul realised after joining an actual Guild his sword stance had been wrong the whole time. Qata mentored the Duskwight and continues to assist when the need arises, though he is now with his kits and Kinra Zhwan.

Ain Cordare

Ain is an bubbly, enthusiastic Keeper of the Moon who is unashamed to express her opinion. This trait has served Mykaul well in the past, and she is someone he considers trustworthy.

Organisations

Bastion

Hired by Ru'aiken Nunh, Mykaul has benefitted the Company by contributing gil from the jobs he takes. The message Bastion stands for is what appeals to the Duskwight. Mykaul is a defender at heart and he will do whatever it takes to see the innocent protected or avenged. This Company allows him such freedoms.

The Coliseum

Mykaul knew only one weapon: the sword. His way of handling it was rough starting out, However, under the guidance of some extremely gifted Gladiators, he has blossomed into a full squire, well on his way to his dream of knighthood. His relationship with the Guildmaster, Mylla, is one of mutual respect. Mykaul understands Mylla better than most, because in another turn of events, he could have easily been just as bitter and jaded as she. He does not begrudge her bad choices, though, for he knows she has the bigger picture in mind.

Stillglade Fane

Making the move to Gridania was not one he made lightly, or for any single reason. While it was Kahn'a Od'hilkas that drew him to the charms of the city-state, it is his own moral compass and affinity with the laws of nature that makes him decide to stay. During his Trials of Air, Mykaul came to realise he had unwittingly found a connection with these sprites. Occasionally, the winds whispers tales of danger or howl of someone needing help. His connection with Air affords him one ability, though: he is able to detect falsehoods spoken. He cannot know what the lie is centered upon, nor what the truth may be, only that a lie has been spoken to him. Initially, this caused him great distress, but after a recent life-shifting event, dishonesty no longer phases him and he is able to accept the fact without a single flinch.
