Olivia Shriver is a member of the Lominsan Foreign Levy, officially acting as a healer and privateer for the Maelstrom. An orphan, Shriver grew up in colonial Sharlayan in the Dravanian Hinterlands and proved a promising young scholar. Catching the eye of a mentor, she received the opportunity to study abroad and broaden her horizons in arcanima and alchemy. Returning to Sharlayan, she graduated from the Studium and chose to continue her travels on her own. During those travels, she was captured by pirates and eventually adapted to their way of life until she was arrested by the Knights of the Barracuda and imprisoned. Olivia was eventually offered a pardon on the condition that she join the reinstated Maelstrom as a member of its Foreign Levy. She agreed and began a practice as a physician to make gil using her knowledge.

Appearance

"I am never unintentionally rude." —Olivia Shriver

Bookish and somewhat stern, Olivia's demeanor may seem a bit aloof or distant.

Pale with preternaturally smooth skin, Olivia's angular face makes her appear somewhat distinguished among midlander women. Her short, brown hair is tied in a neat bun, braided at the sides of her head and coiffed to the front. Narrow, green eyes peer at her surroundings, lined in black with red eyeshadow to match the colour she paints her lips.

Symmetrical save for a small beauty mark under her eye, her straight nose and jawline give her a prominent profile. Like the smoothness of her skin, Olivia's figure also seems somewhat enhanced with a noticeable bust, slender waist and generous hips. These features aren't typically displayed due to her style of dress.

Olivia's fingers and toes are painted red to match her lipstick and eyeshadow, usually also matching her suit jacket. Rimless glasses with brass frames or brass-rimmed pince nez commonly adorn the nearsighted physician's face. Though she doesn't always wear them, her ears are pierced and she often replaces her glasses with earrings when she prefers to go without them.

Biography

Born in colonial Sharlayan in 1541 of the Sixth Astral Era, Olivia Shriver was given up for adoption before her first memory had formed. As a result, the family name and the clothing the child wore were the only things given to Olivia by her parents. With a natural curiosity for the world around her and a love for learning, Olivia took to the scholastic atmosphere of the Dravanian Hinterlands from a young age and began reading by the age of three. Essentially raised by the community, Olivia received support and encouragement from her peers until her gifts garnered the attention of an experienced arcanist named Mystgeim Rhotylwyn.

The nine-year-old Olivia departed the colony for the Sharlayan home island north of Aldenard, accepted into the Studium under the tutelage of Mystgeim. Inspired by the roegadyn's use of arcanima to manipulate the body's aetherial flow and internal processes to heal ailments, Olivia began years of intensive research learning various arcane geometries and the myriad plants that grow across the known world. Olivia spent six years of study under Mystgeim, who occasionally took her abroad to Thavnair and Vylbrand to hone her craft, before matriculating.

After her graduation, she found that she preferred the wayfaring nature of her studies abroad to the general Sharlayan preference of non-interference. In 1559, the teenager left to continue her studies in other lands, becoming a ship's physician to fund her voyages. Unfortunately, three years after leaving Sharlayan, Olivia found herself raided and shanghai'd by a pirate crew. The pirates killed most of the other members but left her alive for her rare and valuable skills as a healer, forcing her to use her skills to aid them in raids on Lominsan ships and to mend the wounds sustained in battle. Olivia received training with a firearm during this time; to her personal horror, she used it to shoot and kill an attacking Knight of the Barracuda during a brutal naval battle.

Olivia wound up spending five years as the pirates' servant as they raided ships and visited different ports around the world. She took advantage of the situation to pick up a few new skills as a culinarian and weaver to cook for herself and the crew and mend their damaged clothing. In her third year as their captive, Olivia helped orchestrate a mutiny against the much maligned Captain Grace O'Malley, putting her first mate Grymdoen in command. Under Grymdoen, things were easier for Olivia; for her part in the mutiny and her previous service to the crew, she was promoted to first mate of their crew. Soon, Olivia was wanted by the Lominsan government. In truth, she began to identify with the pirates - a fact that deeply troubled the physician.

Unfortunately, in 1567, the ship ran afoul the Primal Leviathan at sea near the coast of Vylbrand during a battle with the Knights of the Barracuda. Olivia survived the ordeal, left badly injured as she washed ashore in La Noscea. The authorities promptly arrested her and she faced detention in Limsa Lominsa. Due to the circumstances of her brief career as an outlaw, she was shown leniency and incarcerated rather than executed. However, when Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn became admiral five years later and reinstated the Maelstrom, R'ashaht Rhiki offered Olivia a full pardon on the condition that she accept a position within the Foreign Levy of the Maelstrom. Naturally, she agreed to these terms and became a Storm privateer.

To Olivia's credit, her part in the Maelstrom was earnest. Grateful for her freedom, she did her part to serve the newly reformed Grand Company by healing wounded Storm soldiers in battle and providing medicinal remedies to the organization. During and after the Calamity, she provided succor to wounded civilians and soldiers returning from Carteneau across La Noscea, Thanalan, and the Twelveswood. While she travelled, she honed her skills in arcanima and alchemy, and picked up various skills. At the close of the era, Olivia provided support to the Maelstrom during Operation Archon and received a promotion to Sergeant Third Class.

During the first months of the Seventh Astral Era, Olivia returned to practicing as a physician and frequented Ul'dah and Limsa Lominsa. Shortly after the Gates of Judgement reopened, Mystgeim contacted Olivia to meet her in the Dravanian Hinterlands. While it is not known what transpired between them, Olivia returned from the expedition and showed up in Ishgard wearing a tattered preceptor's coat and broken glasses, her body heavily bandaged.
