It was from his resentment of his daughter that her father, Molten Heart, named the blood-covered newborn Red Demon. Instead, Red grew up in the care of her parents' friends within the village and lived with a local smith.

After slaying a bear to protect one of the region's trappers, she was rewarded with her lifelong chocobo companion, whom she named Syggfryd, meaning "Victory Peace" in the old Roegadyn tongue.
