'''Character Summary'''

Rook is not entirely a complex character. He is a man who has lost everything but still wishes to do good, despite everything telling him you can’t and the odds are stacked against you he still pushes onward. He has a lot of hate and guilt which motivates him, he’s not entirely chaotic as he genuinely believes in the Limsa and that it is the best hope for La Noscea and believe in the order it can establish, same can be said with the other city-states. His hate comes from mostly self loathing as well as hatred towards those who prey on others, which he turns into aggression in his battles. He feels guilty because of all his mistakes, misfortunes, and family’s death are repercussions from actions he took in his past, either justified or not. Rook was suppose to be a reluctant hero who goes from selfish to more heroic, though End of an Era sped this process up, turning him more into an unapologetic hero (with his own personal demons). He’s not much of an anti-hero anymore, though not your common noble hero, he’s more between the two.

'''Where to Find Rook'''

Rook can typically be found in taverns within the La Noscea region, preferring to drink alone in a dark corner. Though if Rook is found within a group of fellow adventurers or Company members he is often times found isolated where he is seen keeping himself busy by sharpening his blades or doing inventory on his own supplies.

Rook Devileye can be very much be seen as an imposing figure as he stands tall even for a Highlander. Fair skinned and toned build, Rook uses all his given talents to aid his journey across Eorzea often working as sellsword, privateer, or just typical freelance adventurer. Rook is of eastern decedent, possibly originating from Hingashi or Doma. In terms of physical appearance Rook can be said to be more of a dirty scoundrel than a proper gentleman as he tends to dress with some flair. Possess graying hair that is often done in traditional far eastern style; although the most striking feature is that of his heterochromia. One eye a dark shade of green and the other gold. His gold eye is the source of the Devileye name which is obviously not his true surname, which is something he has never revealed. Rook can always be found armed, either with a katana or a firearm and occasionally an axe.

He describes himself as being your average over sized Roegadyn. Most of his built is thanks to his genetics of being a Roegadyn but another is due to the physical life he has chosen for himself, life of an adventurer. The next thing one notices is the usual dark green skinned which clashes to typical paler Seawolves, Rook claims that its probably because he is not from Eorzea or it may just be possible that he has some Hellguard in his blood. His hair is often seen unkempt though its partial due to him constantly wearing his hat or other head equipment. Often times Rook covers his head with his trusty silver tricorne, that easily links him to Limsa Lominsa being the typical attire is almost customary. Rook is rarely seen without his beloved hat which points to it being more sentimental as when he is on the warpath he often forgoes his tricorne for more traditional attire for combat, meaning he does not wish for it to get damaged. Resting over his left eye is that of a highly detailed and highly crafted eye patch, leaving behind a lone yellow eye that Rook claims is gold. His golden eye has a large number of scars surrounding it while the eye itself is unharmed, his covered eye bares no scars or aged wounds. Though beneath his eye patch is a cloudy white eye which is believed to either blind, dead, or otherworldly. The last major physical trait that many comment on is the scars found upon his face, five total. He claims that each scar on his body tells a story; however, those upon his face are ones he remarks only speak of a sad tale that none wishes to hear. Though Rook is not always seen dressed for combat from time to time can be found wearing a finer attire giving him the appearance of a man with wealth. Rook often mentions that every man needs to wear a bit of flair and style now and again to escape their true barbaric nature.marking. Rook is a complex man, which one could easily describe him as a mercenary with a conscience. Being a fairly cynical towards the world and those who dwell in it, often believing that many are just motivated by self interest and seeking self preservation. Despite his negative view of the world itself, Rook has no problem speaking his mind or dealing with people; yet, often times prefers not to. He is honest with most travelers and fairly open, often time to time he will even embellish here and there for certain stories. However, stories that concern his origin and past often varies as Rook been known to conjure up a variety of back stories; he's the son of the Navigator making him a demi-god, another he claims to be the he is a bastard son of some noble house of Ishgard, and yet another claim that he is the emperor of the Garlean Empire and he is merely on an extended vacation. Rook has no problem with risking his own life to defend and aid others. He does not do so for honor, glory, or fame. Those that have know parts of his past believe he seeks redemption for his past crimes serving or that he has a death wish and seeks to throw his life away. He may not even know why he fights, it's all he has ever known.

However, stories that concern his origin and past often varies as Rook been known to conjure up a variety of back stories; he's the son of the Navigator making him a demi-god, another he claims to be the second cousin of the Admiral, and yet another claim that he is the emperor of the Garlean Empire and he is merely on an extended vacation. Rook has no problem with risking his own life to defend and aid others. He does not do so for honor, glory, fame, or even gil. Often times will do so for the sake of doing something as well as his nagging conscience. Rook believes that doing good deeds for praise or any other means other than because it was the right thing to do is the wrong reason to do said good deed. Rook often puts up a very cold and tough exterior as he does not want to get close to others and just wants to make enough money to walk away from the mercenary and corsair lifestyle for good (yet bad investments, shortcuts, debts, and other vices force him to return to being a hero for hire). Despite the cold and tough front he puts on he possess a soft spot for women and children and often times will go out of his way to help those in need, though he'll often explain he was bored or was doing it to make himself look good as means to cover up the good deeds he just accomplished. Yet he has moments where he is unapologetic with his goodness and heroism, despite often shrugging off such feats. After the Calamity, Rook has developed a great sense of guilt for leaving Eorzea during it’s darkest hour. One could say Rook has become more heroic as he throws himself into protecting others and striking back at those who prey on the weak or innocent, he would dismissed these thoughts of course but he also makes no apologies for playing the role of hero.
+
Rook's greatest strength is that of his resolve as he is fearless in the face of danger, for to him its merely another challenge. His stubbornness also adds to his strength but also a weakness as he does not like to run from a fight even if it means death. Possibly suggesting a death wish or he holds little value of his own well being. Rook's shortsightedness and living in the moment attitude is perhaps his greatest weakness as it often forces him to make bad judgement calls, while others should give up the chase, he'll continue which may lead to disastrous results. His vices get the better of him almost every time, his bad investment, and poor decision making have force him to constantly abandon his dreams and ambitions. Now trapped living the life of a mercenary and nothing more. Fighting, gambling, drinking, and any other distraction Rook gladly bask in if it means he can forget his past and who he is.

When it comes to fighting Rook is overtly aggressive in his style. Stubbornly, Rook does not back down from any fight and will stay in the fight longer than he should. He is one who does not like to hold back and prefers to fight only worthy foes that are either equal to his own prowess or greater. He is very direct and honest in combat and out, he disapproves of dirty tactics but is not above it himself in fighting dirty. Despises weak opponents and cowards. It is quite possible that Rook possesses a death wish or holds little value of his own life, as he always throws himself into the nearest conflict and refuses to back down or retreat in most cases. In almost every fight he will attempt to draw attention to himself to ensure only he is the one attacked, Rook has often joked saying he prefers that every fight be his fight. When fighting more humanoid foes, Rook prefers to maim and disable his foes than rather go for the kill, allowing them to live but in no shape to ever fight again.

==='''Beliefs'''===

Rook does believe in the Twelve but he down rights despises all of them. He has blamed them for the bad luck that has followed him his entire life and with the major problems afflicting the world. In his drunken stupor he has been known to damn each one of the Twelve and Primals, as he generally feels that they do not care about mortals, that they enjoy the suffering of the races and are in general powerless and useless to pray upon. In his youth where he rode the waves and sailed the open waters his patron god was Llymlaen. However after the loss of his crews and ship to a nasty storm, he forsaken the Navigator. Being a natural wanderer and drifter at heart, Oschon had often received prayer and tribute, but in time he would eventually turn to despise all gods and focus on putting his faith into people rather than the divine. Rook often times lives for the moment, for he does not wish to tread within the past nor dream of the future. Concept such as honor and valor are things that Rook does not put much stock into as he views them as meaningless. For one cannot feed oneself on honor nor cannot survive solely living off of good deeds; however, Rook has no problem in doing good deeds but he does not believe in doing them to win favor or make himself look good but because its the right thing to do. Rook does believe in luck but luck attempts to avoid him. To Rook it is not the gods that make the world turn, but gil and power.

==='''Strengths'''===

Many would believe that his greatest strength would be his own physical strength that most Roegadyns possess, but truthfully it is his resolve. Rook is utterly fearless in the face of most threats that can strike fear into the most iron willed adventurers, for Rook it is merely another challenge. His stubbornness also adds to his strength, allowing him to stay in the fight longer than he possible should which can be seen as both strength and weakness as he does not like to run from a fight even if it means death. He much rather die with his head held up high and weapon in his hand than be alive as a dog with its tail between its legs. This often times suggest a death wish or little value of his own well being.

==='''Weaknesses'''===

Undeniably his greatest weakness is that of his vices; ale, gambling, women, and laziness. He has attempted number of times in the past to achieve his goal of going legit and having a simpler life but his vices often get the best of him, undoing all of the hard work he has done and returning him to travel the road or ride the sea in search of work. Rook's shortsightedness and living in the moment is perhaps his greatest weakness as it often forces him to make bad judgement calls, while others should give up the chase, he'll continue which may lead to disastrous results. His vices get the better of him almost every time, his bad investment, and poor decision making had forced him to constantly abandon his dreams and ambitions, forcing him to create smaller and shorter goals, which trap him living the life of a mercenary and nothing more. Repair bills, easy women, cheap drinks, and countless other matters keep him on his feet seeking contracts. Often times Rook refused to take responsibility over his actions and will often time blames fate or luck over his own choices.

==='''Public Backstory'''===

Finding the truth of Rook's life is a difficult task for he has a habit of changing it up depending on his company. However most versions known Rook is that of a drifter who immigrated to Eorzea for unknown reasons. Yet, after arriving to Limsa Lominsa Rook would quickly find himself caught up in the affairs plaguing the western city-state. Upon arrive to the city-state, Rook had signed a length contract dedicating his services almost exclusively selling himself towards Maelstrom in which he has worn red in support both of the Grand Company and city-state serving mostly as a privateer hunting pirates and other enemies of the state. It is unknown if Rook truly believes in Limsa and its Grand Company or merely working to earn a paycheck.

Not much is really known about Rook Devileye. Many who have attempted to uncover his origins and history often discover conflicting stories, many of which are purely fabricated and outright outlandish though perhaps some truths lurk within these tall tales. What is known is that he was once fought under the Garlean banner during their early occupation of Doma but fled after an unknown incident. He has also spent a great deal of time out at sea as a privateer under Limsa command and has acquired a large sum of debt accumulating across all regions. Those who have cross his path have often spoken of his tendency to seek out a fight, whether it be out of self worth or simply battle lust is unknown, and also speak of his habit of helping other without much thought nor concern for his own well being. Rook Devileye has worked for numerous groups but has rarely stayed within their ranks for very long, excluding the Maelstrom or Garlemald. Known for his brutality on the battlefield, Rook is not one to be taken lightly even if he may appear apathetic as he does possess a sharp wit and sharper tongue to go with his wild temperament.

What is known about Rook is that he is a mercenary who has a preference for dangerous and often near suicidal jobs, many of which most adventurers and sellswords have turn down. When asked about this, Rook has often made remarks that he simply enjoys a challenge and loves to fight, that fighting itself is the only thing he ever know how to do well in life and that it makes him feel alive. According to rumors Rook at one time had a family as well as owned his own ship which traded supplies along the Strait of Merlthor; unfortunately, his family was killed and was driven into a dark spiral. It is also known that after the Calamity he disappeared, only to return five years after returning by ship to Limsa Lominsa once more. Though returning as somewhat changed man.

==='''Private Backstory'''===

As a boy Rook was found adrift in the middle of the northern sea with no recollection of his life before being fished out of the water. The day he was rescued would become his nameday 28th Sun of the 5th Umbral Moon) as he had no memory of his life before nor had any family.

He would from then on live the life of a pirate until he arrived to Eorzea. Due to his large size even as a child he found work which would build his rough exterior and harden heart.  He had bounce from one pirate crew to the next, often times due to surviving shipwrecks or rival pirate crews convincing him to jump ship. It was not long till he was brought into contact with Limsa Lominsa, seeing an opportunity to find a new life for himself he walked away from the pirates life and wanting to see what Eorzea had to offer.

He would find himself working as a dock hands as a means to start his new life, though this would be relatively short until others discovered he was more useful for other work; namely fighting. Becoming an adventurer, he mostly made money off of escorting caravans and other weary travelers, this would push him farther and farther away from the sea as he grew fond of exploration and adventurer in general. Traveling to Ul'dah and Gridania would further expand connections for him as well as open his eyes to the larger world. Rook would find himself sitting upon a small fortune which he believed would allow him to live a more honest life. However, he quickly found himself plagued with bad investments, poor decisions, and angering the wrong people. He quickly began to take shortcuts as a means to get debt collectors off his back. Though the more short cuts he took the bigger the hole he dug himself.

His life moved at lightning speed as events after events transpired, both good and bad. His life would fluctuate between extreme highs and lows, one of which he could never truly recover from. The mistakes and wrongs he done would extract their vengeance upon him a hundredfold. Yet Rook would continue to push forward in life had decided to settle down as he had fallen in love. She was another Seawolf who helped her father on his merchant ship. Rook was entering his late twenties and was happy. He wanted to retire from the life he had made for himself. The two quickly got married and even had a daughter but such happiness was not in the cards for Rook Devileye.

His past would come crashing down as members of his old pirate crew would extract revenge for his mutiny, all those years ago. To pirates, other undesirables, and even the major companies of the city-state mutiny was something not forgivable and seen as a high crime. Left for dead with his wife and child slain before him, Rook's life would spiral into a state unbreakable depression. With nothing left Rook threw himself into the one thing he still remembered how to do and that was fight. He returned to Limsa where he joined up with the Maelstrom, becoming a privateer who hunted pirates and other enemies of the state. Into his thirties the worldly events would push him to go well beyond the city-states where he would be tangled up with interesting characters, Grand Companies, beastmen tribes, the Primals themselves, and the Garlean Empire. He no longer cared about himself other than to fight and do some good until his days ended.

Though when the moon began to descend and the calamity was nigh, Rook had opt to skip the big fight with the Empire at the end of the world bash. Instead he choose to put closure to his past and face the murderer of his wife and daughter. Despite gaining his vengeance he remained empty and felt defeated and during Eorzea's darkest hour the Roegadyen had fled back into the unknown, returning to the northern sea.

He had remained in the unknown for five years, traveling and fighting far from Eorzea. Though events would pull him back as a terrible sense of guilt would eat away at the Seawolf prompting him to sail back to Limsa, though as a changed man. Wanting to do all he could to protect and defend those in need and to put to use the only skill he ever possessed, fighting. There were pirates, beastmen, and imperials endangering the only place he called home and he would no longer just sit back and do nothing. He’d unleash his fury onto those who would prey on the weak and rage towards the Garlean or even the Primales themselves if they stood in his path.

==='''Bonus'''===

If Rook was to ever have a voice or even to be portrayed by an actor in a live action version both choices would be that of Ron Perlman. Both his voice acting and physical acting would easily do Rook Devileye justice. He has range and acting ability to easily portray Rook and as seen in the Hellboy movies could sit through the process of turning into a Roegadyn.

'''Themes'''

[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kJKZKj7OBI Bastion Soundtrack: What's Left Undone]: This would be something that Rook would sing to himself, either walking along the docks of Limsa or wandering wherever alone.

[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9H-QejIuAE Iron Maiden: The Mercenary] This would be a general theme for Rook, given his background as a mercenary and how he often tries to portray himself as a tough individual.

[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Arl988QXlYQ&feature=player_embedded Ennio Morricone: Per qualche dollaro in più] This could be seen as an entrance theme for Rook for his more heroic moments, as in riding in on a Chocobo to save the day.
