Rinda'li Shalo (9th Sun of the 6th Astral Moon (11th November)) is a reclusive and misanthropic Keeper of the Moon. Born and raised in a Wood Wailer penal colony, it was only in the past handful of years that he entered wider civilization, having remained secluded in the depths of the Shroud prior. Possessing a wary, suspicious nature, Rinda'li's distinct lack of social etiquette often serves to alienate others. Despite his crass, grimy exterior, the Miqo'te possesses a strong sense of right and wrong, even if he has trouble expressing it.

Background

Early Life

Far to the east of Camp Tranquil, across miles of inhospitable, morbol-infested marshland lays a secluded and foreboding valley, where prey is scarce and the winters are unseasonably harsh. Known as 'the Thistle' to those unfortunate enough to inhabit it, this faraway location has long been used by the Wood Wailers, and even occasionally the Twin Adders, to dispose of unwanted elements of the Twelveswood; poachers, thieves, and worse. It was into this place that Rinda'li entered the world, the twelfth and youngest child of a violent and rash woman who, by that point, had lived more years within the penal colony than out of it.

While he belonged to a large family, with eleven older siblings, his mother's misandry applied even to her own sons. By the time he was old enough to walk, Rinda'li was largely left to fend for himself; while he was allowed space in the ramshackle, family hut, there was no guarantee that the malnourished kitten would be allowed a share of their meager hunts. With his sisters not wanting to appear weak in front of their mother, and his sire nowhere to be found, what little care he received was administered by his two older brothers, and only when they could make some use of their youngest brother in return.

At eleven years old, Rinda'li was forced to join the Bloody Thorns, one of the many gangs that shared the Thistle, a collection of petty but violent thugs whose only claim to fame within the penal colony was their possession of a coveted steel mask, inside of which a map was etched that was rumored to lead to a great treasure. Under their custody, the young Miqo'te was subjected to numerous humiliating, demeaning, and dangerous tasks, further embittering and lowering his own sense of self-worth, frequently punished, even tortured, for his failures.

Perhaps one of the great ironies was that the Calamity that have ravaged so much of Eorzea largely went unnoticed within the Thistle, sheltered as it was in the far wilderness. Indeed, unbeknownst to Rinda'li, it actually facilitated his eventual escape. The Keeper was sixteen when he finally had enough, deciding that he would escape the prison he was born into or die in the attempt. Either result would be preferable to facing the hardships he'd endured any longer. As a final act of vengeance, the Miqo'te took the Bloody Thorn's coveted mask, and head out into the swap.

Fortunately, the havoc wrought by the Calamity had changed the landscape around the Thistle enough to dry up a section of the marshes that surrounded it to be unsuited for morbols, creating a navigable passageway out of the penal colony. It wasn't completely free of the beasts, however, and after several weeks and a narrow encounter that left his torso scarred and his tail mangled, Rinda'li had made it into the wider Shroud.

For well over a year, the reclusive male was content to live on his own, and in many ways life had never been better; the hunting was more plentiful, no one was out to actively abuse him, and he was free to do as he pleased. It was a meager and lonely existence, with the next meal's subsistence his only motivation for waking up in the evening. It was during one such evening that he stumbled across a traveling performing troupe. Intrigued by wary of the colorful, jovial gathering, the Miqo'te shadowed the caravan, never coming into sight or approaching them, but trailing behind for almost a whole moon before finding himself out in the sun-drenched plains of Thanalan.
