The birth of an abomination

Xandra was 10 when her parents died during the revolt of Ala Mhingo. She was one of many orphans, and no investigation was made on the deaths of her parents. They were simply a casualty of a catastrophe, nothing more nothing less, regardless of how viciously brutal said deaths had been.

Xandra remembers little of those times. Her parents had been healers of a magical nature. She seldom speaks of them, but when she does, it is always some nasty comment about them being 'dirty Conjurers'.

Xandra's childhood was as cold and detached as one would expect given her situation. As many children of Ala Mhingo, she was taken by Garlean forces to be trained as a soldier. At first there was little to note about Xandra. She was exceptional in combat, though she was unable to use any type of magic. She clearly understood the concept, which is usually enough for people to be able to do at least the most basic spell, but when Xandra tried, nothing at all would happen. However, Xandra made up for this by being quite adept in combat. Her weapons of choice were her hands and axes. Although she was exceptional with a firearm, when given the choice, she'd opt for a more up-close and personal weapon. The axe was truly her weapon of choice, allowing her to exert the brutality she craved for in battle.

Xandra attracted quite a bit of negative attention, specially as she grew older. As she aged, she became more extroverted, voicing her disinterest in Garlean nationality or the idea of following orders. No attempts to brainwash her or indoctrinate her bared any success. Her insubordination was astounding to many, as someone conscripted at her age should have been successfully brainwashed by her teens. But Xandra showed no signs whatsoever. She cared little about nationalities or duty.

Although puzzled by this, it never really arose any true trouble for her superiors. Xandra was always willing to battle, and that was ultimately what was asked of her. It was her instructor's hope that she would just be swept under the rug, left a cohort for her entire life, and hopefully die young in a skirmish.

At age 17 Xandra became a serious problem. Few have forgotten the morning when the sun rose and a young Xandra was found in the courtyard of the academy, surrounded by the corpses of a whole squadron of young thaumaturges, bathed in their blood as she laughed hysterically. She didn't resist arrest, and gladly confessed to have killed them all. She had challenged them to a duel, and clearly, she had won... by taking it to the extreme.

Although in captivity, Xandra showed no remorse. This event called the attention of quite a few important figures, not only because of its grisly nature, but because Xandra had no injuries. Having fought a whole group of mages she had not a single scratch on her.

Things only got worse with time. Xandra did not take captivity as a punishment, but rather as a field day. She showed no signs of slowing down on her rampage, killing numerous fellow inmates with reckless violence. When locked in isolation she turned her violence onto the guards, managing to kill six of them in a three month period, along with two staff members and a cook. She was out of control, and as a final measure, she was placed in the highest security available. It was here that the mystery began to surface. Her cell was patrolled and locked using magitek, but the moment she was placed in said cell, the machinery around her began to fail. Power would flicker, energy sources would be drained, locks would fail, it was as though her presence was ruining all magitek around her. Equipment needed more and more maintenance and repairs the longer she stayed in this containment. Finally, by her 19th birthday, containment faced a catastrophic failure. Xandra broke loose, and instead of making a run to freedom, she instead made her way deeper into the prison, only to begin a nearly unstoppable slaughter. In less than an hour she killed ten inmates and five guards, along with three doctors. She was finally apprehended when she ran out of steam. As in the morning of her initial capture, she didn't resist, and instead laughed with hysterical joy even as she was cuffed and taken back to confinement.

It was during this incident that Xandra's odd nature became undeniably obvious. Every person she had ever killed was skilled in one or multiple forms of magic. Every time she had emerged victorious without a single burn or scratch on her body. She was, somehow, immune to magic... and she only targeted magic users. With this knowledge, Xandra was taken to a more specialized facility owned by the Aldaveir family. In said facility Xandra's condition was studied, tested, and cataloged.

Xandra was an anomaly unlike any the Empire had seen. She was quite literally a hole in the aetherial flow, an abomination that was physical life without any connection to the world around her. Magic moved around her as though she was encased in a bubble, but truth is it was simply a matter of magic being unable to contact her at all. Even magitek had this effect. In an extreme test, Xandra was shot with a magitek cannon. Although the force of the cannon did have an effect of her, it was minor, as the beam simply parted around her, merely pushing her back.

As was expected, this anomaly brought all the attention to Xandra. Her condition was kept a secret from the public, and the tests and studies of it became an absolute focus. Because of her severance from the aetherial flow, Xandra was unable to use any form of magic. Magitek malfunctioned if exposed for too long to her anomaly. People, specially magic users, would start to feel ill if exposed to her for too long. Plants would die if left around her for too long. Her anomaly was contained, it didn't spread, but it did affect the world in close proximity to her. The closer you were to her, physically, the less aether there was. Prolonged stay in such conditions would, quite literally, suffocate the life out of anyone.

The cause of Xandra's condition was a mystery, even after years of research. Any and all attempts to mimic her condition failed, and blood samples lost all traits of the anomaly in mere seconds after being extracted. Being at a loss, it was decided that the best use for Xandra would be in the field. However, by the time such a decision was made, Xandra had become so unruly she would prove as much a threat to Garlean forces as she would be to the enemy. It was at this point that Legatus van Darnus himself stepped in, and after a heated battle, Xandra finally submitted. At first it seemed like Xandra simply saw she could not defeat the Legatus. Although this was a fact, Xandra was testing him during the skirmish... and she felt a kindred to her opponent. It was in this way that Xandra agreed to serve, as long as it was under him. Xandra was immediately placed in the VIIth Legion.

After the death of Legatus van Darnus, Xandra was freed from service. However, even after the failure of Meteor, she had become fascinated by Bahamut's destructive power. Xandra lacked any notion of fear, and the destruction she had witnessed only empowered her, inspired her. Her lust for bloodshed was far from satiated, instead only incremented as she saw destruction of such magnitude.

Xandra joined the XIVth Legion of her own volition. Many resented her history, but few dared speak against her. Her reputation preceded her everywhere she went. She cared little for the appreciation of others. She only cared for the promise of battle, of destruction, and if kept away from it for too long she would become steadily more violent towards her comrades.

Although the XIVth Legion was defeated, Xandra never stopped. Cut from command she merely reverted to her murderous nature. She continued to kill as she saw fit, avoiding capture from Eorzean authorities.

Personality

Simply put, Xandra is... insane. There is nothing remotely sane about the woman. At times her insanity can be comical, though anyone who has seen her in battle would know that feeling uneasy around her is not only normal, but wise. She can be rather unpredictable, at times turning on people who thought she was friendly. For the most part, Xandra only focuses her bouts of violence towards magical beings. Anything from sprites to mages to primals. However, given aether flows through all life, she can sometimes become a bit... 'driven'... towards the non-magical. Unless in battle-mode, these instances can be resolved by simply distracting her with something. Outside of combat Xandra has a hilariously short attention span. Although Xandra tries really hard to be able to exist around other people, in reality, she simply sees no value in life. She isn't a full-blown homicidal maniac... unless she is in battle mode. Outside of battle mode her behavior is more like that of a predatory animal. The rules that apply to handling a feral dog work on her like a charm. Show fear and she will sniff it out, focus on you, and make your life hell. Stand your ground and be firm, and she will treat you as an equal... and be very observant of any faltering. Approach her with aggression, and you can bet she will be angry, and possibly violent.

Other Notes

Likes: Battle, meat, axes, hand-to-hand combat

Dislikes: being away from combat for too long, magical creatures, places with high aetherial activity, eikons

Markings and scars

Xandra's left eye is blind, and to this day no one has ever figured out why. Records show that when she was placed in the orphanage she had already lost sight in said eye. When asked, she usually responds with a laugh.

Xandra is a reckless warrior, and for such she bears many scars. Most notable is the scar across her nose, given to her by Legatus Van Darnus in their duel. She also has a three-clawed scar on her left shoulder, a stab scar on her lower abdomen, a long scar on her right calf, and a long single scar on her back that crosses from her right shoulder to above her left hip.

Xandra's hair is platinum-blonde. The red 'highlights' on her hair are the result of blood actually dyeing her hair. Xandra does practice impeccable hygiene, but the grisly nature of her work often leaves her bathed in blood. Because she bathes often, her hair does not stink of blood, but rather of flowers.

Serial killer

Xandra has made a home of the areas around Limsa Lominsa. Because of her odd addiction to killing magical things, she has taken to slaying magical creatures and people alike. She is discrete when killing mages, but some of the bodies have been found, meaning that rumors of a serial killer on the loose are plausible. Though given the rare nature of said killings, it is also possible that they are often blamed on bandits or beast tribes.
