First Impressions

The first thing you notice is the glint in her emerald eyes. The light smile on her lips. Her gently furled brow. She has the look of gentle determination in her eyes. She holds her shield steady and her sword behind her, ready to strike but only if it is necessary. The wind picks up her long hair as it flows behind her. Her short demeanor disguises her steadfast stance.

Personality

She works hard to act as a beacon of light to those around her, trying to inspire courage in the hearts of her allies. The mistakes of the past haunt her, and drives her ambition alongside her deep desire for Justice and her lust for heroic deeds. She will do whatever it takes to do the right thing and doesn’t hesitate to put others before herself. Yumi almost always has a smile on her face. Only in times of personal turmoil will she expose that which haunts her. She does, however, commonly confide in those closest to her.

History

Early Years

Yumi is a victim to Garlean Imperialism. At the age of 4, she was orphaned and became a refugee. She was brought to a small orphanage near the boarders of Eorzea, where she was bullied for being one of the only non-Hyuran children there. She became close friends with the other outcast, a Lalafell named Xai. They became siblings to each other and both adopted the name Hikaru, after the light they sought in their time of darkness. She remained there for 10 years until the Calamity, which destroyed the orphanage. The survivors fled to Ul’dah, hoping to take refuge behind its walls. Yumi and Xai managed to slip into the city and lived off of the streets as Beggars. Yumi tried to live an honest life and made gil off of odd jobs and hand-outs. Xai, on the other hand, was bitter at the world for his lot in life and occasionally stole from some of the city folk. One day, he tried to steal a coin purse off of an old man, but he was caught off guard by the old man’s quick reaction time and found himself at the wrong end of a sword. The old man was sympathetic towards the young Lalafell, and after hearing about his sister, decided to adopt both of them.

Days in Ul'Dah

The old man was a Highlander Hyur by the name of Lancel Stillguard. He was a retired Paladin with years of adventuring experience and a small fortune for which to live out the rest of his days. He happily shared his stories with the young refugees, who became engrossed in his tales of heroism. They both decided that they too would become adventurers, in honor of the man who gave them the light the sought. They trained under the Lancel for four years. They wouldn’t have the chance to finish their training, however. Lancel was murdered one night on his way home by a thief. He was unable to defend himself, as Yumi had borrowed his sword and shield for training. Stricken with grief and guilt, she locked herself in the house for months. Meanwhile, Xai tracked down Lancel’s killer and exacted vengeance on him, taking the murderer’s daggers as his own. He decided to become an assassin who would bring the light of Justice to those who hide in the dark.

When Yumi was finally ready to face the truth, she left Lancel’s home with his sword and shield. She decided that she would become a Paladin, in order to follow in Lancel’s footsteps, and to make sure she has the power to protect the people she loves.
