Basic Info

A bard who has taken to traveling Eorzea in search of inspiration. While he calls Gridania his 'home' Khai is always looking for the next sweeping vista or bloody battlefield to write his next ballad. While not a notable bard of name, a lot of that may be due to him never actually putting his name to any of his compositions, only traveling from town to town, performing his songs as the mood hits him.

History

As one of a handful of sons born in the Gryphon tribe, having so many males around the same age was bound to spark trouble later. While the position is by no means ever assumed, Khai proved to be a very capable youth even in his early years. His father often said that the boy was too clever for his own good, and far too steady of a shot for a child. As a child, he enjoyed playing with his brothers, but as they grew older their relationship only soured. After all, there were 5 boys, but only one could be nunh. Some of the females favored a couple of the sons more than the others, Khai and his brother Khan, and this sparked an intense rivalry between the boys. Khai wanted none of it. What was the point in fighting? Why couldn't they simply work together?

Fights began to spark between the sons and Khai found himself needing to defend himself from not just the monsters they hunted but his own brothers. One such scuffle that ended in one of them perishing pushed him over the edge and he packed his things with every intention of leaving this madness behind. His mother begged him to stay, "The tribe needs you", she would say. Even her tears were not quite enough to make him stay, but his brother Khan convinced him to stay. "It's our duty and our responsibility"

Unexpectedly, his father had suddenly fallen ill and passed before the tribe could even understand what was happening. With no nunh, the huntresses had little reason to stay and the tribe threatened to fall apart. As that realization dawned on the sons, Khai was faced with his first challenger. He knew it would happen, he expected it and he had every intention of losing. He didn't want to be nunh, he never did, but his brother fought fiercely and if Khai expected to survive he needed to kill him. It tore him inside to watch his brother bleed to death, still spitting insults at him, calling him weak of heart for crying over his victory. His brother Khan was victorious over his opponent leaving the two to face each other.

But neither had the heart to fight each other anymore. The vicious fight that had broken out between the brothers drove some of the females away and a much smaller number now remained. Khan and Khai put on a show of a fight, with Khai intending to concede to his brother, and Khan let him walk away. With the position of nunh now filled, Khai knew he could leave the tribe in good hands. Though he knew he would miss his brother, Khan sent him off with a smile and a reassurance that he would always have a home.

Free of his tribe's responsibilities, Khai could explore the world as he wanted. Being skilled with the bow and arrow, he could now hone his skills for himself and not for his tribe. This new found freedom sparked something else in him, a love of song. While singing was by no means a strange act to his fellow tribe members, it was an interest many of his brothers chided him for. It would be unbecoming of a nunh to dedicate so much time in his day to composing ballads. But now, there was no one to tell him otherwise, and compose ballads is exactly what he would do.

Personality

Though friendly, Khai isn't always one for conversation. He could often be found humming a tune or plucking the strings on his lyre and is always willing to play a song to brighten someone's mood. He generally stays out of conflicts and despises being dragged into them, but is more than willing to observe them as they unfold. While he loves traveling, he doesn't mind lingering in a spot for a friend in need. Whether they're in need of a shoulder to cry on or song to lift their mood or cheer them on, he's always willing to be there for them. When given the chance, he loves exploring dungeons, if only to see their untouched beauty regardless of the dangers that may lurk within.
