History

Rin was found among the floating wreckage of a ship in the Sea of Ash. He was only four summers old, but the captain of the pirate ship that found him decided to take him aboard. The captain was a Roegadyn woman named Sthalswys but the crew called her Capt'n Steeltoes. She was a skilled sword arm as well as a formidable witch and her ship was called The Crimson Tempest.

From the beginning, Rin was taught pick pocketing and shoplifting. He was also used often when the crew wanted to grift wealthy townspeople out of their gil, since Rin was so young and little and, frankly, innocent and pitiful looking, the crew found him very useful in that way.

As he grew older, Rin was put to more physical work aboard the ship. He grew out of his childhood looks and thus became less effective at inciting pity from the people in the cities and at the ports.

Rin began to learn to fight early. First some among the crew took to showing him to defend himself with his fists, then later came knife work. He learned to fight with twin daggers as well as throwing them. Finally, he was shown how to fire guns.

Just after his fifteenth Nameday, the captain fell dead. She had somehow been poisoned, and the blame fell on Rin because he was the one who always prepared and brought the captain her food as well as any other task she gave him.

Luckily enough, they had been docked when this had taken place, and Rin was able to escape. Before doing so, he took the captains grimoire as well as a a good portion of her treasure cache. After a few weeks of hiding out, moving from small village to small settlement, Rin had made his way to Gridania. From there, he took an Airship to Ul'dah. He reasoned that a desert would be the farthest he could get from the sea. Somewhere along his travels he had become sick, and once he reached the city he decided to get a room at the Quicksand to rest.

Early the next evening, while he was drinking a hot mug of cider at the bar, he met an Elezen named Alexois. After a bit of small talk, the conversation turned to Rin and his health. Alex offered him a tonic of his own making that cleared up Rin's symptoms almost instantly. This caused Rin to trust Alex more and their cordial friendship continued.

Months later, after dabbling with the grimoire Rin took from the ship, he began to unlock some of its secrets. Soon though, he found himself getting sick once more. Again, he sought out one of the few people he trusted for help; Alexois Fierlaine.

By this time, Alex had taken up residence in an establishment known as the Phoenix Rose. It was some sort of refuge owned and operated by an Elezen couple by the names of Vaughn Antain and Jaques Guillaume. They were kindly and welcoming while Rin sought the help of Alexois. Soon Rin's symptoms disappeared thanks to Alex's remedies and decided to remain at the Rose for the time being.

Not very long after taking up residence at the Rose, those that were willing took up a mission to venture into The Wanderer's Palace. Rin jumped at the chance for an adventure, but was badly injured inside of Palace. He came extremely close to death, but was pulled back from the brink at the last moment by Alexois' alchemy. Ultimately, Rin's soul was bound to a phylactery that Alex kept without telling him. To this day Rin has no idea what Alexois did, or where his phylactery is. He recovered at the Rose, but decided he needed to leave. When he was very near death, he saw a dream of Capt'n Steeltoes. She spoke of how she knew Rin wasn't responsible for her death, and that she came to warn him. He needed to move on.

He decided to leave to Gridania. The Twelveswood seemed a good place to retreat to for some reason, maybe because he was tired of the hot dry desert.

Personality

Playful, loud, obnoxious, talks a big game, brave, protective of friends, stands up for weaker people. Also headstrong, resists authority unless he respects them, questions rules constantly, always hungry

Goals

Rin's most immediate goal is to elude the pirates who are still pursuing him due to his stealing a large share or their loot and promptly fleeing. He is also blamed for poisoning the his former captain, although he didn't do it in truth. He doesn't have much of a plan for the future, he lives day to day.

Other Notes

Although he doesn't know it, Rin's dabbling in magic is making him sick. Those who are aetherically strong and knowledgeable about such things might notice but the average person probably wouldn't know.
