Basic Info
The daughter of a Roegadyn adventurer and a Miqo'te hunter, Mara grew up at Camp Bronze Lake before setting off on her own with her faithful carbuncle in tow. Her happy-go-lucky attitude hides beneath it a quiet anger that manifests itself in wild magic, and her so-far fruitless search for her runaway mother has only served to fuel the flames of her ire.
Her rather Hyuran name derives from the fact that the leader of the first party of adventurers she traveled with couldn't remember her "weird cat name," and so started calling her Mara, after his own little sister.
History
Mara Mercer (née O'qoia Shurza) was born and raised in Camp Bronze Lake, where her father, O'Shurza Tia, made a living selling the skins of local creatures he'd hunted. Her mother, a Roegadyn adventurer of some renown, enjoyed an on-again-off-again relationship with O'shurza whenever she visited the camp. Her last visit came in the final weeks of her pregnancy with Mara--her arrival was a surprise, the announcement of her pregnancy even more so, although her sudden departure soon after the birth of her daughter was the most surprising of all.
The phrase "it takes a village to raise a child" had never been more true for anyone than the inhabitants of Camp Bronze Lake as Mara terrorized the small settlement in her early years. She was constantly underfoot, running small errands, playing pranks, and begging adventurers for stories of a Roegadyn woman whose name she didn't yet know. As she grew, she began making herself useful around the camp, using her larger-than-the-average-miqo'te build to help merchants carry their stock--she tried helping her father hunt, but proved woefully unskilled with both bow and sword. A gift of an old tome from a shopkeeper she often worked with, however, helped her discover her innate skill with magic, and soon a small, emerald carbuncle became quite a common sight following on Mara's heels.
Eventually, the wanderlust that had been growing in Mara for years erupted into a desire to follow in her mother's footsteps. She left the camp she'd known all her life and headed to Limsa Lominsa in hopes of becoming a proper adventurer--and, she secretly hoped, of some day meeting the mother that had abandoned her.
Personality
To strangers and friends alike, Mara puts on a cheerful, go-getter attitude. While this attitude is genuine, it also helps her hide her anger and frustration she feels towards herself for a number of things. She pushes herself to extremes fairly often, and more than once has nearly gotten herself killed because of it--but she's yet to learn her lesson.
