Character

General

Nalin Frostclaw is a clanless Keeper of the Moon Miqo'te with a strange name for one of his species. He wanders Eorzea, looking for work or to aid those who need it as he aims to become a powerful Dragoon.

Appearance

Standing at five foot nine; this man is built like your average dragoon, possessing strong legs to perform great jumps and a muscular upper torso capable of wielding heavy lances with the greatest of ease. His hair (and fur) are a deep rich purple naturally highlighted with a very pale icy blue; though often enough the blue in his hair is mistaken for gray streaks, as it appears more white than blue in certain lightings. His eyes are a very silvery white color, almost resembling that of the moon.

His skin is extremely pale for a Keeper of the Moon; and while his face is clean of most scarring save for the slash across the bridge of his nose, the rest of his body is another story entirely. Nalin's chest and back bear multiple puncture and gash-like scars that spread down to his legs and towards his elbows as well; though normally the scarring is rarely seen. However, the scarring on his arms and bits of his chest can be seen depending on the type of clothing he wears.

Nalin, scarring aside, is otherwise clean of markings; save for the standard Keeper of the Moon tattoos near his nose and on the sides of his face.

Personality

Though his appearance, species and demeanor may suggest he's a brooding, dark and antisocial type; Nalin is actually quite the pleasant person, one who will hold a conversation with someone if they should approach him. He's a kind man, one who tries his best to be a good and upstanding gentleman, though he finds this to be extremely difficult at times. He likes to help others, especially when he knows or senses they may be in danger, and never expects payment or reward. And he will be respectful of those who deserve it.

Though he is generally a good person, Nalin is a bit savage by nature and sometimes tends to speak like a ruffian or a war veteran of sorts. He has no table manners at all and has the most difficult time controlling his urges to get into a fight. Due to his love for battle, if he sees a fight about to take place, he's usually at the front of line, ready to leap into the fray, weapons or no. It should be noted that he will not start fights unless one of his own friends or an innocent life is being threatened; otherwise he usually cannot be provoked into starting one. Naturally, following that he does not like people being picked on, he does not tolerate villainy or rudeness of any kind; and will stand up for himself or others, even if the person or creature he opposes is three times his size and is far more powerful.

Nalin cannot handle flirts or romantic advances at all, and is known for freezing up and blabbering nonsense when approached about the topic. He is absolutely horrible with romance and with getting his emotions across in general; to where he will result to literally shouting everything he says when flustered or blushing. He is also rather bad at friendships, as he is prone to wandering off without contacting anyone, only to show up days or possibly weeks later with no explanation as to why he was out of contact or where he disappeared to. Long story short; relationships of any kind are not one of Nalin's strong points.

However, even though he is bad at emotions and relationships, he will become fiercely loyal to people he grows close to. And he will rush to their aid or side if they should call for him and he will defend his friends with his life.

Hobbies and Talents

Most of Nalin's hobbies and talents are very much house work; which includes:

  • Cooking
  • Sewing
  • Cleaning

Quirks

Although he takes great insult when treated like a housecat, Nalin does have uncontrollable cat-like habits. These habits include:

  • Purring when his ears are scratched or his head is pat.
  • Hissing when frightened, angry or taunting.
  • Chasing after or swatting fast moving objects. (Has little control over this)
  • Climbing onto things, specifically high places, and sitting on said things.
  • Wandering off for long periods of time with no warning.

Other habits

  • Cooking is what Nalin seems to be known best for by his friends. He takes his cooking very seriously and it's not at all uncommon to find him mumbling about food or trying to find ways to put a new twist on an old dish. Though, he is also capable of becoming extremely depressed if he fails to properly prepare a meal or if someone spits out his food and claims its bad. In fact, his depression gets so bad that he will find a corner to sit in while repeating over and over that he has brought shame to his clan and family. The only known ways to get him out of one of these fits is to present him with a gift(Most notably fish) or a new cooking ingredient.
  • Has Photic Sneeze Reflex, also known as Sun Sneezing. He will randomly sneeze due to the sun or other extremely bright light sources. This reflex is 90% of the reason he hides his face behind his helmet; as it shields his eyes. Though sometimes he can be caught with just a pair of sunglasses.

Combat

General

Nalin has two fighting styles.

With a lance, Nalin is extremely graceful and very precise with his attacks. He is quick moving and light on his feet, nearly jumping from place to place at any chance given in hopes of making hitting him difficult. Due to the fact that he has no real way of blocking attacks, save for the pole of his lance, he will often roll or leap away from any strikes aimed at him. In this style of fighting, Nalin is extremely focused and calm.

Should he be disarmed, Nalin results to his fists, teeth and claws. His fighting style barely changes, as he still leaps and moves about quickly. The only thing that changes is his attitude. While in hand-to-hand combat, Nalin will steadily become more violent and savage; and the more dangerous the situation gets, the more vicious his attacks become. The reason for this is all because of his view on fighting: With a lance, every hit should be timed and precise. But with his fists, its less about grace and more about fighting for survival. A reflection of the teachings he received from both his dragoon mentor(lance) and his clan(survival).

Companions

Calixia the Sylph

Calixia

A young female Sylph who can sometimes be spotted following behind Nalin. Though there is very little information about Nalin's past history, it can be safe to assume that Nalin had, at some point, reached a friendly status with the Sylphs; allowing him to gain Calixia's friendship and trust. The two of them share a deep sibling-like bond and cannot be separated by any means.

Calixia, like the rest of her species, is a prankster at heart. And she demonstrates this side of her quite often, especially toward Nalin, as her pranks are her own special way of showing affection. She also affectionately refers to Nalin as "Stupid One", "Slow One" or "Dodo one"(courtesy of Caoimhe). This usually will spark a short argument between her and the dragoon; but the arguments are always very mild and feelings are never hurt.

Calixia is extremely special to Nalin, and he will go through great lengths to ensure her safety and happiness.

Kenji

Kenji

Nalin's faithful Chocobo. At first glance, Kenji appears to be a very standard Chocobo. But upon closer inspection... He's still a very standard Chocobo. The only thing significant about this large ball of feathers is that he is not exactly the brightest bird in Eorzea; and sometimes finds himself running into walls and chasing after various creatures for fun, much to Nalin's dismay... As a majority of the time, Kenji does these things while Nalin is riding him; thus making an already long journey last even longer.

While Kenji often frustrates Nalin to the point of walking to his destination; he cares for his bird and takes care of good him and Kenji cares for his owner immensely.

Kenji is also nest brothers with Caoimhe's chocobo, Derek.

Relationships

Family

As far as anyone knows, Nalin's entire family is deceased.

Friends

Caoimhe Eirwen

A woman Nalin met one day while out exploring The Black Shroud. After saving her life from an Ixali attack, and nearly getting shot by one of Caoimhe's arrows in the process, Nalin had every intention of simply continuing on his way. Alas, fate had other plans in store, and the two continuously ran into each other until they inevitably began working together on jobs.

Nalin and Caoimhe argue often, mostly over misunderstandings or miscommunication. The two have grown surprisingly close and Nalin has become quite protective of her. Nalin's feelings for Caoimhe continue to grow, much to his dismay, and he now has difficulties hiding his feelings for her as his expression usually tells all when around her. He still gets quite jealous and depressed when he spots her with another man, but has begun attempting to control those emotions... He also appears unsure and uneasy about even pursuing this possible romance.

Sho'sae Jinjahl

A fellow Keeper of the Moon; Sho'sae is a White Mage who later joined Nalin and Caoimhe on their adventures across Eorzea. Not much is known about Sho's past, but Nalin is fond of his company and has slowly come to view the miqo'te as a good friend and possibly even a brother. Nalin has recently begun confining in Sho and tells him his emotional problems that he would not otherwise share with the other members of their Free Company.

Sho is inquisitive, and often uses Nalin as a means to test out new spells or potions. And while Nalin likes the man's company, he's not fond of being used like a lab rat. Nalin is also deathly afraid of Sho's snowman mask for reasons no one knows why.

Silianaux Lothaire

A dragoon who seemingly appeared out of no where one day, when in truth he had been trying to join Nalin and Caoimhe on their journeys; his attempts were just often missed. He now travels with the team, mostly because he has a great interest in Caoimhe; whether its romantic or not remains to be seen.

Silianaux keeps Nalin on his toes nearly at all times and a rivalry for Caoimhe's affection and attention has sparked between them. They are nearly always butting heads and rarely do they get along... Recently though, it seems Nalin has developed some sort of fondness for Silianaux; though he will never outright admit to it. But it is safe to assume that Nalin will probably now help this man, whether he accepts it or not.

Honora Alder

A woman Nalin met in The Quicksand tavern of Ul'Dah. A curious woman who seemed partially interested in Nalin's past. The two seem to have some common ground, having met over a discussion of people watching and booze drinking. Nalin is slightly concerned for her safety, as she had once acted uncomfortably and shifty, as if someone had been watching her.

Kairi Lightpaw

A fellow dragoon, one who Nalin had met at The Drowning Wench in Limsa Lominsa and had a short conversation. The two ran into each other again on her Free Company's ship, after he had drank too much and passed out in the brig while the ship was still docked. The two spent a bit of time together on the ship, discussing their fears, before they departed with Kairi's Free Company onto an unknown island; which resulted in Kairi being indoctrinated by a mysterious figure. Nalin attempted to help Kairi come to her senses, which she eventually did, but only after embarrassing herself by acting completely out of character in front of him.

Nalin, having learned of Kairi's past history and the trouble she faces, views the woman as someone in need of a friend; one who would not betray her trust. Whether or not he will be that friend, or assist her in finding the friend she needs, remains to be seen. Nalin has also come to question his own personal morals due to her.

History

Very little is known about Nalin's past, and the clan he hailed from, as he refuses to speak about himself in that regard. What is known is that he is, apparently, the last surviving member of his clan and the rest have been confirmed dead. The clan consisted of two large families who called themselves The Frostclaw. They resided somewhere in Coerthas for an unknown amount of time and were killed just short of the Calamity. The clan was not well known; as they mostly kept to themselves and kept far from Ishgard traffic.

Nalin began learning the ways of the Dragoon from an unknown Ishgardian after his family's demise, so it can easily be assumed that The Frostclaw clan was wiped out by dragons. According to Nalin, the training he received was difficult, frustrating and often he felt that his mentor just liked making Nalin look like a fool.

He took on the alias Nalin Frostclaw upon his clan being wiped out. His birth name is unknown.

Annotations/OOC notes

Long time MMO-player and RPer here! I'm usually IC all the time; unless you catch Nalin standing in the middle of a city with mismatching armor, then I'm probably alt-tabbed or afk and may not notice any IC approaches. So my apologies for that!

This is the first time I've made a wikipage ever so I'm tweaking it as I go along.

Thanks to R'tali_Tia for the template!
