Taryn has generally been observed as a reserved, quiet individual who keeps his thoughts to himself. Though he has been seen frequenting taverns and other establishments he appears to prefer his own company or that of a few close friends over rowdy gatherings of strangers.

===Background===

Though Taryn Thorne was born into a relatively wealthy family in the city of Ul'dah, brought up to take over the family business in the event of his father's passing, events never quite played out that way. The inheritance that should have been his ended up instead under the control of his uncle, a man who schemed and manipulated his way to a fortune and would have seen his nephew dead and buried in order to obtain his aim.
+
The midlander has a cautious, watchful nature; though whether this is something he has always demonstrated or something learned during his time in Ul'dah is uncertain. It is most likely a combination of both. He tends to pay close attention to small details, a habit developed in recent years; much of which he has spent working as a security escort for trading caravans and individuals.

When his uncle tried to have him assassinated in order to take control of the family fortune, a betrayal made worse by the family relationship between the two, he didn’t react by challenging him head on in a fight he knew he had little chance of winning. Rather he adopted more subtle means to bring the man to ruin.
+
Taryn appears to be an almost obsessive collector of books and scrolls, mostly pertaining to the areas of alchemy and Magi-tek development, suggesting a fascination with such subjects.

At first he tried to find a way to reclaim his stolen fortune. But by the time he had recovered from the attempt on his life and returned to Ul’dah the family wealth and its associated business were already in the hands of his scheming uncle and he had been declared officially dead. Though he could have stepped forward and shown that he was very much alive, he knew that it would take substantial effort to prove that he was who he claimed to be and not simply an imposter, and his uncle would undoubtedly have had him killed as soon as he so much as stuck his head above water.

Utilising what he knew of his uncle he bided his time, watching the man’s activities closely until he had something that could be used against him. Eventually the man had to slip and Taryn had every intention of being there when it happened.

===Background===

It didn’t take too long.

Though Taryn was born in the city of Gridania he and his family relocated to Ul'dah when he was roughly nine years old. As a youth he learned how to wield and fight with a polearm, initially learning from his father and in later years from a number of different teachers in his employers service. Four years prior to the advent of the Calamity he began working for an Ul'dahn merfchant, serving in the capacity of both guard and later enforcer - a choice that our investigations suggest to have been influenced by the existence of significant gambling debts racked up by his father.

Gaining access to his uncle’s estate was easy enough, once he knew how to do it. Creating substantially convincing evidence of shady dealings was a little harder, but eventually he had everything he needed to set up his uncle’s fall. The fact that the man had indeed been involved in some rather shady dealings of late only served to substantiate the highly detailed reports he made sure fell into the hands of the city’s authorities. If the man had been completely clean he would have had little to worry about… well, maybe.
+
He is believed to have spent approximately four years in this manner, only leaving the city to return to Gridania after the advent of the Calamity. As soon as travel became possible he and his surviving family members appear to have returned to the area of the Black Shroud  where he appears to have played some role in helping his sister found her own business in the city which she uses to support both herself and their mother.

The fallout eventually led, as he had hoped, to his uncle's arrest and the dismantling of his company. After his uncle’s arrest Taryn left the city of Ul’dah but not before making sure the man knew exactly who had orchestrated his downfall; sending him a special ‘gift’ to ensure the point was made.

Four years ago he arrived in the port city of Limsa Lominsa and appears to have remained there ever since working as a security guard for a small Magi-tek Research and Development company which was later absorbed by the growing XI:7.

Background

Though Taryn was born in the city of Gridania he and his family relocated to Ul'dah when he was roughly nine years old. As a youth he learned how to wield and fight with a polearm, initially learning from his father and in later years from a number of different teachers in his employers service. Four years prior to the advent of the Calamity he began working for an Ul'dahn merfchant, serving in the capacity of both guard and later enforcer - a choice that our investigations suggest to have been influenced by the existence of significant gambling debts racked up by his father.

Four years ago he arrived in the port city of Limsa Lominsa and appears to have remained there ever since working as a security guard for a small Magi-tek Research and Development company which was later absorbed by the growing XI:7.
