Gailen was born into a lower middle-class family. His mother Marion was a blacksmith and veteran of the Dragonsong War. His mother's husband Eamon was a merchant, selling wares spanning from spices to fine cloths. Even at an early age, it was clear to Gailen that his father did not care for him too much and he was often ignored or yelled at.
