Theodorik Surefoot, a free-spirited child, settled in Limsa Lominsa with his Mother Kasimira Everforge. He apprenticed with his mother, who was an accomplished smith, and grew into his own in the craft. At the age of 16 and against his mother’s wishes he travelled to Ul’Dah Joining the miners guild, Theodorik hoped to finally see the world and to improve his knowledge of ores and metals. The city’s temptation, however, proved to be more than a young Theodorik could handle.

It wasn’t long until he fell into drinking, gambling and chasing women. Neglecting his responsibilities to Guild and family he eventually gained more debt than he could pay which earned him an indentured servitude to a shady loan shark named Labraid Barrett. Labraid immediately set his newfound slave to work. Capitalizing on the boy’s imposing stature, Theodorik found himself to be the unwilling muscle in many of Labraid’s illegal ventures. It was on one of those ventures where the loan shark had saw opportunity in Theodorik beyond that of a simple thug.

During the operation, a fight broke out, one in which Theodorik had to fight for his life. While largely untrained, the boy had good instincts, raw talent, a fair amount of luck along with a good measure of physical and mental strength that allowed him to emerge victorious. Labraid then found a new profession for his prized slave; a gladiator in the Coliseum.

Theodorik was thrown to the Bloodsands to win money for his master. Looking to test the boy’s mettle, Labraid watched eagerly as Theodorik went on to win his first few matches against exotic beasts gathered from across the realm. However, he soon realized that Theodorik’s talent would not be enough to earn him the fortune he sought. Labraid gave the boy over to the Gladiator’s Guild to train him to become the next rising star.

There was resistance to the decision to accept the slave of a less than reputable man, but there was potential in the boy that few could deny and a fire in his eyes that spoke of a passion for life. He was given a sword and shield and immediately began his training under the watchful eye of the First Sword, Mylla. From dawn till dusk, Theodorik underwent grueling routines and drills at the hands of his trainers. Much of his first few weeks were spent in a somnabulent trance whenever he wasn’t training. However, he bore his hardships stoically and learned what he could with an earnestness that earned him the grudging respect of his peers and betters. Before long that respect turned into a sense of camaraderie and he began to feel at home with the other gladiators of the guild. It was likely that camaraderie that saved his life.

Labraid, seeking reap the benefits of his slave’s training and looking have his gladiator build a reputation, thrust Theodorik into a string of unforgiving matches on the Bloodsands. Mylla and others of the guild protested vehemently, as the fledgling fighter was scarcely a month into his tutelage. However, Labraid’s influence was simply too great and they were powerless to stop him.

While Theodorik fought brilliantly, despite his inexperience, his exhaustion and his wounds from back to back fights began to take their toll. During one of his matches, one misstep saw him on his back with a Coerul atop him. The beast bit at him and its claws raked his body, tearing lines of searing agony across his flesh. It was his own stubborn determination that kept him alive long enough to slay the creature before he succumbed to his wounds.

Desperately clinging to life, Thedorik’s torn and bloodied body was dragged from the Coliseum floor while onlookers cheered on the gory spectacle and clamoured for the next event. The healers looked him over with a clinical detachment and determined him not worth the energy of saving. Theodorik’s body would have been tossed among those who have already been claimed by Thal if it were not for the intervention of his friends from the Gladiator’s guild. Using what little money they managed to put together they managed to at least convince the healers to do what they could, if only to give Theodorik a fighting chance.

Pulled from the brink of death, Theodorik clung to life with a tenacity only he knew. He was taken to a clandestine location to recuperate, away from the prying eyes of Labraid and his lackeys. Should the loan shark know of his prized slave’s survival he would stop at nothing to retrieve his property. In the time it took him to heal, earning his freedom consumed his waking thoughts. Through connections made within the Gladiator’s guild he was able bring Labraid into custody by providing evidence of his crimes. He began working to repair his damaged relationships and reputation and to beg forgiveness from his mother. A long and arduous journey before him, though one he walked proudly and freely.
