Adellenne Hocoleux
[edit]
Adellenne was born to a family of poachers who lived deep in the Black Shroud. Although gifted permission to remain in the area by the elementals, their work hunting made it difficult to provide. They often resorted to other means, including conartistry. Her parents struggled to provide for their six children and, when she was eleven, sent her two oldest brothers out to make their way in he world. Although heartbroken to lose the company of her favorite brother, she turned her attention to pursuing her passion in music and healing. Having discovered a talent for water based magic, her parents were in the midst of discussing her training with the Conjurer's Guild when Adrien returned home. The money he arrived with, and the letter from Sebastiont about his recent marriage, set those plans on the back burner. Once again the family was able to hold their own.
Several cycles after this Adelle was following several of her brothers when she mistook a Tree Slug for a knot in the wood of a tree, and plummeted to the forest floor. In her terror at landing on a large root, which would have likely pierced her chest, she somehow pulled the root just far enough to save herself from impalement. Instead her head struck a tree knee, shattering her glasses and leaving her comatose for two suns. When she finally awoke, her memories were scattered. She found it difficult to piece who was who and where she was. After several moons she seemed to have recovered, although it was realized that she was unable to form new memories. Adelle's brother Gasparmont petitioned for his youngest sibling to be sent away, claiming her lack of tact and general confusion from sun to sun made things more dangerous for the family as a whole. Eventually her mother agreed, and her legal guardianship was given to the Conjurers. She lived with them for close to twenty cycles before an excommunicated member named Cicero Fortescue was given the position as her guardian. He brought her to Thanalan, where she was given new clothes and the task of learning herself. While this left her with an abundance of free time, she took to it with purpose and began to understand who she was as her own person. Roughly six moons after her arrival to the Free Company known as E.R.A., Adelle was subjected to several experimental procedures to repair the damage to her brain. Alchemical and surgical procedures caused her to suffer from hallucinations, seizures and disassociation before the side effects settled. While it worked, it left her unable to properly distinguish a present event from that of a memory. Slipping into one of these states would leave her nearly catatonic for bells at a time. She was later given a service dog, Dozer, as well as a Mammet named Mungo to help with these episodes. Both learned cues to keep her from slipping, and will use auditory or electric means to keep her present. Adelle now works as the Chief Medical and Clerical Officer for E.R.A., although she has been known to work outside the Company on occasion.
Standing at 6' 6" puts Adelle above most people she encounters. Adelle’s height is mostly in her legs, although they do not seem blatantly disproportionate to the rest of her body. Long, slender and graceful, they lack things like blemishes or scars simply because she’s never had a time to acquire them. On the back of her left thigh is a darker blue shape she says is a birth mark, even if she has no real way of knowing. Her figure is willowy, with toned arms from working the garden or lifting heavy boxes of medications. While not considered curvy or soft, she has a slight hourglass figure made more prominent by certain dresses or blouses.
Her eyes, on the other hand, are likely her most prominent feature. Although she once went without makeup, she now tends to rim her upper lash line with both mascara and liner. This gives her an almost doe-eyed expression which she is more than grateful to hide behind her glasses. The blue of her eye is uncorrupted by flecks of any other color, giving them a look not unlike polished sapphire. She has the odd habit of not blinking often, particularly when she’s thinking, which can be somewhat unsettling. Since alterations to her mind were made, whenever she’s being affected by her memories or thoughts her eyes are the most telling clue. The eye will dilate, the color seemingly swallowed by her pupil, and they almost gloss over. At this point Adelle will seem to be gazing through current conversation partners or even surroundings, and if not immediately brought out of the memory she will be unable to blink or look at anything beyond what she’s currently ‘seeing’ (remembering).Aspects That Stand Out:
Adelle greets any first impression like an interview: formal, stiff, and with every ilm of polite docorum she can muster. While personable, she is incredibly reserved about giving out too much information and would much rather have someone else discuss themselves than give any insight. This generally lasts until she feels comfortable enough to relax, and share her thoughts. Depending on the person, this can take anywhere from a few suns to a moon or more. On the field, when working, or in her infirmary is another matter entirely.
Proud, demanding, and with a firm 'take charge' attitude to any given situation makes her appear to be more confident than she appears. When overwhelmed, she'll often politely excuse herself from whatever duties she might have and flee to the Shroud. Above all else, meeting her there will reveal her true nature. Relaxed, curious, and perfectly at ease. The three sides to her make her a bit difficult to get to know, but she turns down company less and less.
