Character

General

At first glance, Mel appears to be a genuinely mild mannered scholar. He seems to have no trouble at maintaining a well-kept and presentable appearance, likely because he rarely ventures out and prefers to stay indoors with his nose in his books. Those that know him also know that he decries the use of magic due to the possibility of those that rely on it becoming lazy or addicted to its affects.

When not forced to travel or bottled up in his house, people can find Mel in his clinic located in Ul'dah. It's very likely not well known as Mel himself emphasizes the use of natural healing rather than using conjury or arcana to mend wounds. This has left his previously family-owned clinic in shambles and often visited only by the desperate and impoverished that cannot afford better. The shop itself, despite being in obvious need of work, seems to echo Mel's personality. It's kept very simple and has three rooms. The main room is the waiting and reception area where his maid, Shadiyah Amari, accepts guests. A small door leads directly into the examination room where Mel receives and examines patients. The only other room is a storage closet that is connected to the examination room. Here, Mel houses various plants, potions, remedies, and also allows it to double as his laboratory for mixing potions.

Appearance

Mel is tall for a Midlander, standing a little over six feet. His posture isn't exactly perfect and may make him seem a tad shorter than he actually is. His chin-length black hair, streaked with a darker shade of blue that can sometimes be mistaken for purple, is usually kept parted at the middle to frame his narrow face and patricians nose to give him an overall regal appearance. His brows are thin, the inner half of which slant downward in order to lend him an overall mischievous or stern expression. His eyes are violet and generally focused on one thing or another, the man forever curious of his surroundings and what makes things operate. Most notably is the long, thin scar that bisects his eyes. Another scar is on his left cheek, though it usually remains hidden by his hair.

His skin is dark, but he also doesn't seem to be the kind that would get out much. Despite wearing baggy robes or clothing, one can tell that his physique is slim though he doesn't appear to have any notable physical strength. He almost always has a bag or satchel of sorts slung over his shoulder filled with various vials, potions, and a book or two for light reading whenever he's forced out of his home. The robes he wears, while seemingly hailing from a time when his family was wealthy, show a hint of fatigue as if he can no longer afford to keep them in perfect condition. He also seems to require glasses for reading and usually has those on his person at all times.

Behavior

Mel tries his best to be as polite is possible, offering mirthful smiles and charming laughs whenever possible. This is, of course, whenever he finds himself in a social situation. He's a generally pleasant guy, if not a bit nervous and awkward due to his lack of social skills or socializing at all. These random fits of nervousness tend to happen sporadically and, when they do, cause him to become a complete and utter klutz.

Combat

General

Mel isn't much of a fighter. In fact, he much prefers to talk things out rather than get into combat situations. Should he ever find himself in combat, he'll likely just drop and cover his hands over his head while hoping that whatever bad thing is present goes away.

Tendencies

Likes

  • Little known facts
  • Helping others

Dislikes

  • Physical contact, sexual or otherwise
  • Rudeness
  • Lack of respect for the modern arts and sciences

Hobbies/Talents

  • Has the natural ability to retain a lot of information he's read.
  • Loves to research anything pertaining to various old fables, tales, cultures, mythologies, and aether and its manipulation.
  • He has near perfect penmanship. It seems to be an art he's perfected.

Other

  • Those able to sense or detect the amount of aether one has will likely notice that Mel's is rather large.
  • Something seems off about him. Whether it's his lack of social skills or another thing entirely is unknown.
  • He keeps his satchel on him at all times. In it he carries books, vials of various colored liquids, stationary, and other such useful amenities.

Enemies

Mel doesn't really make enemies due to the fact that he's rather friendly. He shies away from most battles and prefers to keep to himself so much that he rarely has a chance to meet people, much less make an enemy of them.

Shadiyah Amari - Shadiyah's family has served Mel's for many generations. Even after his family perished and Mel declared bankruptcy, she chose to stay by his side without a worry. Perhaps this is why he holds her so dear to him. On the surface, their relationship seems strictly professional. She fetches his things for him and obeys him without any sort of resistance. Should one be lucky enough to catch them unawares, however, they may notice a certain glimmer in his eye as he looks at the thoroughly faithful servant. He seems very protective of her, even if he doesn't quite have anything to protect her with. Maybe therein lies the source of his bravery, or perhaps something far more.

Rumors

Common Rumors

  • "Mel? Yeah, the Vainchelon family used to own a clinic down the street from here. Is it still even in business?"
  • "I haven't seen him around in a while. He only seems to travel into town to work or get supplies."
  • "That maid of his is always hanging around him. You almost never see the two by themselves. She must be a pretty faithful servant."

Moderate Rumors

  • "Yeah I talked to him the other day. Flinched when I tried to scratch my nose. He's a strange one."
  • "The poor thing.. His mother and father went to help during the Calamity and perished with the rest of them. At least, that's what he told me."
  • "I went to visit his clinic the other day. The guy didn't even charge me! I'm thankful for it, but how does he plan to keep the thing open at that rate?"

Rare Rumors

  • "I saw him with one of those books he's always carrying around.. caught a glimpse of the name. 'Secrets of the Allagan Empire'. He reads some pretty heavy stuff."
  • "He says he isn't that great with magic, but.. I could sense that he's a virtual fountain of aether. How can someone that intelligent with that large of a pool be unable to cast?"
  • "I was visiting their clinic the other day and they weren't there..'least, I didn't think they were. That maid of his ran in from the back room in such a hurry she damn near forgot to pull her dress down. I'm not saying they're dating or anything, but there's a lot more going on than just business."

PC Rumors

  • "I don't trust him as far as I can throw him, but Lady Faye seems to have some use for him so I'll watch and wait for him to cross a line." - J'maaira Tuhl
