Rook's Tales

Ramblings

Physical Description

Monstrous is a word that could be used to describe Rook due to his imposing stature, standing nearly eight feet in height Rook easily towers over any adventurer including other Roegadyns. After his massive size one would turn to his coloration. His unusual dark green skinned which clashes with the typical paler Seawolves, Rook claims that its probably because he is not from Eorzea or it may just be possible that he has some Hellguard in his blood. His dark auburn hair is often seen unkempt though its partial due to him constantly wearing a hat or helm. Often times Rook covers his head with his trusty silver tricorne, that easily links him to Limsa Lominsa, almost being customary attire. Rook is rarely seen without his beloved hat which points to it being more sentimental than for style. Resting over his left eye is that of a highly detailed and highly crafted eye patch, leaving behind a lone dark yellow eye that Rook claims is gold. His golden eye has a large number of scars surrounding it while the eye itself is unharmed. Though beneath his eye patch is a cloudy white eye which is believed to either blind, dead, or otherworldly. The white eye itself is free of any scarring or markings. The last major physical trait that many comment on is the scars found upon his face, five total. He claims that each scar on his body tells a story; however, those upon his face are ones he remarks only speak of a sad tale that none wishes to hear. Though Rook is not always seen dressed for combat from time to time can be found wearing a finer attire giving him the appearance of a man with wealth. Rook often mentions that every man needs to wear a bit of flair and style now and again to escape their true barbaric nature.

Voice

Rook has a very deep and raspy voice that matches his physical nature. Fond of sarcasm and dry humor, which is often deeply coated in bitterness. Rook often always has something to say, either being an honest advice or just a snarky comment to make. Even in combat Rook has been known to make remarks aimed at his foes typically with taunts and other mockery. Yet Rook typically remains silent or distant, but when he has something to say he'll let his voice be heard and often times will then be unable to shut up.

Demeanor & Nature

Rook is a complex man, which one could easily describe him as a mercenary with a conscience. Being a fairly cynical towards the world and those who dwell in it, often believing that many are just motivated by self interest and seeking self preservation. Despite his negative view of the world itself, Rook has no problem speaking his mind or dealing with people; yet, often times prefers not to. He is honest with most travelers and fairly open, often time to time he will even embellish here and there for certain stories. However, stories that concern his origin and past often varies as Rook been known to conjure up a variety of back stories; he's the son of the Navigator making him a demi-god, another he claims to be the second cousin of the Admiral, and yet another claim that he is the emperor of the Garlean Empire and he is merely on an extended vacation. Rook has no problem with risking his own life to defend and aid others. He does not do so for honor, glory, fame, or even gil. Often times will do so for the sake of doing something as well as his nagging conscience. Though for the most part its often because Rook lives for the thrill of battle and a good fight.

When it comes to fighting Rook is overtly aggressive in his style. Stubbornly, Rook does not back down from any fight and will stay in the fight longer than he should. He is one who does not like to hold back and prefers to fight only worthy foes that are either equal to his own prowess or greater. He is very direct and honest in combat and out, he disapproves of dirty tactics but is not above it himself in fighting dirty. Trained in the ancient ways of the warrior, Rook has learn to channel the great deal of anger and hatred that burns within him turning it into his greatest weapon while not letting his past pain to overwhelm him. A great deal of his ferocity and burning rage is directed at himself for his own failures which have granted him tremendous power on the battlefield. Able to focus and direct this rage has allowed him to be a formidable foe on any field of battle. It is not that Rook is reckless in battle, he is far from it, it is just he has very little value of his own life or even possibly a death wish as he always throws himself into the nearest conflict. In almost every fight he will attempt to draw attention to himself to ensure only he is the one attacked, Rook has often joked saying he prefers that every fight be his fight. When fighting more humanoid foes, Rook prefers to maim and disable his foes than rather go for the kill, allowing them to live but in no shape to ever fight again as a reminder that they crossed his path.

Rook's greatest strength is that of his resolve as he is utterly fearless in the face of threats that can strike fear into the most iron willed adventurers. For Rook it is merely another challenge. His stubbornness also adds to his strength, allowing him to stay in the fight longer than he possible should which can be seen as both strength and weakness as he does not like to run from a fight even if it means death. He much rather die with his head held up high and weapon in his hand than be alive as a dog with its tail between its legs. This often times suggest a death wish or little value of his own well being. Rook's shortsightedness and living in the moment is perhaps his greatest weakness as it often forces him to make bad judgement calls, while others should give up the chase, he'll continue which may lead to disastrous results. His vices get the better of him almost every time, his bad investment, and poor decision making had forced him to constantly abandon his dreams and ambitions, forcing him to create smaller and shorter goals, which trap him living the life of a mercenary and nothing more. Repair bills, easy women, cheap drinks, and countless other matters keep him on his feet seeking contracts. Often times Rook refused to take responsibility over his actions and will often time blames fate or luck over his own choices.

Beliefs

Rook does believe in the Twelve but he down rights despises all of them. He has blamed them for the bad luck that has followed him his entire life and with the major problems afflicting the world. In his drunken stupor he has been known to damn each one of the Twelve and Primals, as he generally feels that they do not care about mortals, that they enjoy the suffering of the races and are in general powerless and useless to pray upon. However this could be in fact him not taking responscibility for his own mistakes and screw ups. In his youth where he rode the waves and sailed the open waters his patron god was Llymlaen. Often praying to her to guide him in his life and point him in the right direction; however after the loss of his crews and ship to a nasty storm as well as numerous lost, he forsaken the Navigator and the rest of the Twelve. Being a natural wanderer and drifter at heart, Oschon had often received tribute as he felt that the two gods were the onlys whom had his back; yet, during his darkest days he decided to revert his faith in himself and gil. Rook often times lives for the moment, for he does not wish to tread within the past nor dream of the future. Concept such as honor and valor are things that Rook does not put much stock into as he views them as meaningless. For one cannot feed oneself on honor nor cannot survive solely living off of good deeds; however, Rook himself has no qualms with doing good deeds, for a price of course. Rook does believe in luck but luck attempts to avoid him. To Rook it is not the gods that make the world turn, but gil and power.

Public Backstory

Finding the truth of Rook's life is a difficult task for he has a habit of changing it up depending on his company. However most versions known Rook is that of a drifter who immigrated to Eorzea for unknown reasons. Yet, after arriving to Limsa Lominsa Rook would quickly find himself caught up in the affairs plaguing the western city-state. Upon arrive to the city-state, Rook had signed a length contract dedicating his services almost exclusively selling himself towards Maelstrom in which he has worn red in support both of the Grand Company and city-state serving mostly as a privateer hunting pirates and other enemies of the state. It is unknown if Rook truly believes in Limsa and its Grand Company or merely working to earn a paycheck.

What is known about Rook is that he is a mercenary who has a preference for dangerous and often near suicidal jobs, many of which most adventurers and sellswords have turn down. When asked about this, Rook has often made remarks that he simply enjoys a challenge and loves to fight, that fighting itself is the only thing he ever know how to do well in life and that it makes him feel alive. According to rumors Rook at one time had a family as well as owned his own ship which traded supplies along the Strait of Merlthor; unfortunately, his family was killed and was driven into a dark spiral. It is also known that after the Calamity he disappeared, only to return five years after returning by ship to Limsa Lominsa once more. Though returning as somewhat changed man.

Bonus

If Rook was to ever have a voice or even to be portrayed by an actor in a live action version both choices would be that of Ron Perlman. Both his voice acting and physical acting would easily do Rook Devileye justice. He has range and acting ability to easily portray Rook and as seen in the Hellboy movies could sit through the process of turning into a Roegadyn.

Themes

Bastion Soundtrack: What's Left Undone: This would be something that Rook would sing to himself, either walking along the docks of Limsa or wandering wherever alone.

Iron Maiden: The Mercenary This would be a general theme for Rook, given his background as a mercenary and how he often tries to portray himself as a tough individual.
