Basics

Taryn is of tall-average height for a hyur and of fairly average build, being not particularly stocky nor overly thin. Appearance is as seen to the right; dark hair, dark green eyes and a tanned skin tone. He has a number of scars; one which is visible the lower right side of his jaw, the rest mostly to his torso and upper arms. Aside from those he also has a fairly distinct black tattoo on the left side of his face as can be seen in the image.

Personality

Taryn is generally a reserved, quiet individual who keeps his thoughts to himself. Though he sometimes frequents taverns and other establishments he usually prefer his own company or that of a few close friends over rowdy gatherings of strangers.

The midlander has a cautious, watchful nature; something he learned during his later years in Ul'dah and he tends to pay close attention to small details; a habit likewise developed in recent years.

He has no head for saving money, often spending it as fast as he can earn it, though he does not share his fathers gambling ways. As he has something of an obsession when it comes to collecting books and scrolls a large percentage of the Gil he earns ends up being spent on such things. In the past two years alone he has managed to gather a small library worth of texts and buying books to add to his collection is an almost compulsive habit.

History

Though Taryn was born in the city of Gridania he and his family relocated to Ul'dah when he was roughly nine years old. As a youth he learned how to wield and fight with a polearm, initially learning from his father and in later years from a number of different teachers in his employer's service. Four years prior to the advent of the Calamity he began working for an Ul'dahn merchant who was heavily involved in more than simple, legitimate trading avenues - a choice that was influenced by the existence of significant gambling debts racked up by his father. There are rumors which suggest Taryn's work went further than simple guard duties, crediting him as having acted in some kind of enforcement capacity at various points in time.

He is believed to have spent approximately four years in the employ of said merchant, only leaving the city to return to Gridania after the advent of the Calamity. With the disaster taking the life of his father and youngest sister, and following the death of his employer (likewise attributed to the disaster, though some may know otherwise) Taryn and his surviving family members returned to Gridania. There he played some role in helping his sister found her own business in the city; something which she now uses to support both herself and their mother.

Four years ago he arrived in the port city of Limsa Lominsa and has remained there ever since, working as a security guard for a small Magi-tek Research and Development company which was later absorbed by the growing XI:7.

Taryn’s family reside in Gridania where his elder sister runs her own business. His father and youngest sister died in the Calamity.

Skills, Interests and Experience

Taryn spent some of his time in the city of Ul’dah studying the alchemical sciences; with arguably limited success. This study was interrupted by the advent of the Calamity, and though he has managed to obtain a small number of texts on the subject which have aided him in continuing his research, he is still relatively unpractised in the art and his knowledge in this area is more theoretical than practical.
