- "You ask me what it is, truly, to be a knight? The answer to near every Ishgardian, until so recently, was quite simple: In order to be a knight, you must serve Ishgard and swear to protect its people against the Dravanian Horde. Certainly, there were lesser prerequisites that varied from House to House or individual to individual. In order to be a true knight, one must slay a dragon. In order to be a true knight, one must be acknowledged by the lord of a House, the Commander of the Temple Knights, or perhaps even the Archbishop, himself as thus. In order to be a true knight, one must wield a spear as Her Radiance, Halone, is depicted to hold, for the spear is the mightiest of weapons and only endowed with a spear might a man or woman strike down our winged enemies...
- This, is perhaps the single most ridiculous variation to me. As with many has it ever been so simple to be a knight in my eyes, and simpler, perhaps, than those few I have recounted as knighthood by my definition is blind to bloodlines or wealth, status or inheritance. In order to be a true knight, all one need do is serve as a champion against evil and misfortune, unwavering in their conviction.
- It matters not to me what weapon you wield, if you wield any at all. It matters not the price of your armor or the crest you wear upon your breast. What matters to me is that, if you would dare call yourself a knight, you would without fear stand against the enemy in nothing more than a burlap sack with a pitchfork in hand for the sake of an innocent. That even without your fineries, without aid of your kin, you might face down the most daunting monstrosity in this realm.
- Yes, Her Radiance is so oft depicted in Ishgard with Her mighty spear and for as long as our documented history have men and women alike waged war upon the enemies of Ishgard with lances of legend. But even beyond Ishgard, in every true depiction of Halone, the Fury, do you know what She has ever been known to hold? Even bereft of Her divine lance has She been known to hold a great shield and not one of gold or mythril, mind you, but of nothing richer than mere bronze.
- Even as a youth have I known this single truth to be resounding when it comes to my faith: without the lance, without a blade, without any arm to hold against Her enemies, Halone is never without a shield. Where near all that I have known praise only that lance, never have my eyes turned away from that ever-present circle of bronze 'neath Her hand. To me, to invoke Her true Fury is to do so in the name of preserving that which ought be preserved, not to throw oneself to the blind rage of vengeance in Her name. To be the bulwark is my devotion to Her, to my family, to my people, to Ishgard...That our faith would be as unyielding as Her shield."

- As an on-duty knight of Ishgard, Camille is near indistinguishable from any other devoted soldier for the city-state; respectful, strict, and obedient to her superiors. Against her enemies, she is a tenacious foe with almost no sense of self-preservation in the face of defeating evil. In a casual setting, she can be a touch awkward in her subconsciously 'masculine' mannerisms though her courtesy is typically above question. Both her sisters oft refer to her as 'Prince Camille', and likewise she can be considered charming based on her noble bearing alone.

- To her friends and to those who might become friends in time, she is an unusually open-minded, warm-hearted individual whose cultural arrogance is often innocent in nature if it appears at all. Despite her age, she is curious about others, their cultures, and the difficulties they have overcome throughout their lives. She is ever open to revising her opinions about anything if logical arguments are made, save for her family and her faith. The knight is slow to kill and swift to defend, a stalwart ally to any defender of justice.

- Given that her parents elected to bequeath her a unisex name at birth ('Camille'), their third-born seems to have been wholly molded by the choice. Like her two eldest siblings, she is fair of hair and skin alike, endowed with above-average height and a broad-shouldered, regal frame. Unlike her eldest siblings, her mother's natural freckling is heavily apparent across her cheeks, shoulders, hips, and forearms. Equally unfortunate, perhaps, is that fact that she has inherited many of her father's more handsome features including a sharp, aquiline nose, thick eyebrows, and a strong jaw line.
- To the horror of both her doting mother and sister, rather than doing all in her power to accentuate her 'feminine' qualities such as thick lashes or shapely lips with cosmetics and a good, solid corset, Camille has long since rebelled against every effort. Silken hair the color of corn silk is often kept conservatively short, the scarring she's endured on her face well-healed but never cosmetically covered. Between these choices, her lack of bosom and her timbre, she can be easily mistaken from a distance or up close as being a man by some even after introductions are made.
- She bears a smattering of scarring including but not limited to: one diagonal mark over the right eye, lesser scarring around the primary mark of the right eye, two burn marks on the left thigh and upper back, gouge wound on the right side, rib-cage from claws. These have been professionally healed to reduce the aesthetic damage but are visibly discolored and smooth to the touch.

- As a lady, she has long suffered discontent with the idea of being tied to the honorable tasks of attending the scholasticate or serving as a loyal wife and mother to some soft lordling; both the only traditional avenues of noble service to House Amarante. As a youth, she proved rebellious and difficult to manage for her parents, purposely falling short in any academic evaluations, and even going so far as to arrange a complex hoax with a young stablehand in an effort to escape the obligation of being betrothed as a last-ditch effort to usurp her father's intentions for her. She was finally given leave to become a squire at age thirteen and has long since garnered not only the forgiveness but the approval of her parents in her endeavors to stand as a true defender in the name of the Fury, though her faith in Ishgard is being constantly tried of late.

The key to true wisdom and might, be Faith.
C O A T OF A R M S
- The emblem of House Amarante, formulated by the first Baron Adrienaux Amarante and emblazoned on standards and armor alike, is that of a peridot shield bearing an amaranth cross. At the axis of the cross is an intricate white key that represents the immortal wisdom and devotion of his House.
Ordinary:
- Cross - Faith and protection.
Colors:
- Green - Hope, joy, and loyalty in love.
- Amaranth - Immortality, undying.
Heraldic Symbol:
- White Key - Peace and sincerity; Knowledge, guardianship, and dominion.

- As the story is told from parent to child from generation to generation, Baron Adrienaux Amarante began his life as naught but a renown farmer, cultivating many crops for Ishgard, not least among which were the beloved amaranth flower from which his family had taken their name. It is said that when a group of Haillenarte knights came to transport a shipment of his crops to their lord, the lot were beset upon by two mighty Dravanian drakes who aimed to raze the farm and all those Ishgardians upon it. While the knights fought valiantly and sounded the horn for aid from the nearby outpost, the fury of the dragons knew no bounds. When one fell to the spears of the knights, the other grew all the more vicious in its rage, setting the knights alight and filling their ears with its wild dirge of retribution.
- It was then that the humble farmer, seeing his fellow men falling before his eyes and reinforcements too far in the distance, lunged from his place behind the knights that meant to guard him and his and took up the shield of a fallen soldier. Armed only with this did Adrienaux invoke the divine fury of Halone, as he came over the felled men, deflecting the great gout of dragon fire meant to end their lives. It is said that this simple Haillenarte shield glowed white on his arm, encrusted by some holy rime that would not melt nor allow his bulwark to burn. Billow after billow of fire spilled over the farmer that the soldiers' sight of him became obscured, but each time the licking flames died away was he there, untouched even by the blackened smoke.
- Vexed by this show of bravery, his attacker took to the land and approached in a rush, giving him time to take up the armament of a knight at his feet. As the fanged maw of that wicked beast came to tear him asunder did he plunge the knight's lance deep into its voracious mouth, puncturing its skull from within the more tender enclave and striking it dead.
- It was for this act of heroism it is said that not only was Adrienaux knighted but made a baron for his accomplishment, and granted a place in the Pillars where his surviving descents reside even now. The shield of the Haillenarte soldier was bequeathed unto him as a token and refashioned to bear the coat of arms of his house. To this day, the Undying Shield is passed down the line of Amarante to those who are both wise and devout. Ever has the humble House Amarante served Ishgard and the Fury both with unwavering devotion.
C U R R E N T L Y
- The current Baron of House Amarante is one Arcenaux Amarante, accomplished scholar of the Enchiridion, retired knight, and father of five. As his bloodline entails, his is a piety that knows few equals, his loyalty and devotion to Halone, the Fury ever above suspicion. Though not a man of the cloth, he has ever worked closely with the clergy and is well-known to its members as a trusted, stalwart ally. His house is always open to young members of the clergy and scholasticate, regardless of how impoverished their origins may have been. Spending time among the Amarante alone does well for the reputations of those who may be considered dubious or questionable to their noble kin.
- Likewise is the greatest benefit to entering a marital bond with this family the ready improvement of even tarnished reputations as Amarante is recognized to be exceptionally selective regarding those whom they are willing to establish any form of bond, social or personal. So selective are they that they have been known to refuse to persist in communication with individuals or groups above their station who have later been discovered to be harboring some form of corruption and even heresy. Theirs is an intriguing form of discrimination in this way, as they will oft take in lesser nobles or knights and know them as true friends based on the strength of their faith rather than the wealth of their reputation or coffers.
- Amarante owns several farms across Coerthas where hardy crops and livestock yet grow. Likewise, they have invested in several Chocobo stables where the finest birds imported from Tailfeather are trained to support all manner of Ishgardian noble. Though their origins were affiliated strongly with House Haillenarte, they bear no particular allegiance to any of the Four High Houses, a fact that has limited their social power in a manner more than supplemented by their reputed piety and closeness with the Church.
- The heir of House Amarante is Adrienaux Amarante, a Dragoon of Ishgard, known among his kin for his invocations of the Fury's Blessings in battle. He is a severe, unwavering individual who is said to hunt heretics with more ferocity than the Dravanians, themselves. He opposes the newest revelations about the deceit of the Holy See, even against the word of his father, though until his father has surrendered his title as head of house or passed in time, there is nothing that the heir's abrasive opinions or opposition may stand for.
