Alus (IPA:æluːs) Beauregard is a locally renowned yet mysterious Ul'dahn goldsmith, free Paladin, and wandering healer. He is the twin brother to Arc Beauregard and adopted son to the late Gwenneg Beauregard, a traveling Wildwood Elezen merchant, of which Alus' surname is derived. He and his brother owe their allegiance to the Grand Company Maelstrom, of which they've received some well renown in the extended military program.

Physical Description

Appearance

Clothing

Alus' fondness of childish fairy tales has inspired a look one might compare to a dancer playing a "Prince Charming" in a play, oft wearing something too flashy for normal wear. His preference for light, thin, white clothing also aids him in his preferred adventuring region of the desert Thanalan. Additionally, while outside during a sunny daytime or light rain storm, Alus will very often wear a Coronal Straw Hat to avoid facial sunburning or wet hair. His off-duty clothing could be described to like formal pajamas; casual with a high similarity to under-garments with thin and soft fabric, but also very discreet, modest, and suit-like, though still very flashy in color; he certainly stands out in the average crowd.
During his more serious adventuring bells, Alus wears very different equipment; a full suit of heavy white tanking armor. He holds the image of "A White Knight in Shining Armor" very highly, but large shock impact always comes first; Something bright, shiny, and bulky is what he prefers to equip himself with.

Physical

With an excellent posture (and subtle aid of heels), Alus stands taller than most of his Miqo'te brethren at 5 Fulm and 9 Ilm (5'9"/175cm). Like his twin, Alus has complete heterochromia of a yellow left eye and reddish-purple right eye, and shares the same outer-cheek tattoos with a minor color variation. And like Arc, Alus likes a little extra facial decoration-- But instead of tribal tattoos, he prefers a colorful and soft-looking makeup.
Despite his obvious obsession with a clean and beautiful image, Alus' long golden hair is not unfamiliar to it's large share of split ends, his clothes and skin also often covered in sand. Regardless of his dirty adventuring lifestyle, Alus is still noticeably more well-groomed than the average adventurer.
Although Alus' face has nearly nonexistent evidence of scarring or bruises, his body is another story. Alus often feels uncomfortable wearing clothing that reveal a lot of skin not only modesty's sake, but for self-consciousness of his large bruises and permanent scars.
Alus' legs are long and elegant, but his upper-thighs, stomach, chest, and shoulders are all very buff and well barreled. His body is specifically built to endure blows to his stomach and chest area, and withstand carrying heavy armor.

Voice

Alus' voice is very deep, loud, and clear, but often cracks when he is not on his guard (e.g. laughing). When speaking in a more quiet or relaxed state, Alus' voice is very soft, reassuring and sweet-sounding. In most situations he speaks in an elegant and polite manner, reminiscent of his Elezen "heritage". With friends, he may speak in a very casual and silly way, whilst when his brother is doing something he disapproves of, his voice will become baritone and stone cold, devoid of any elegance or comedy.

(VA Headcanon: Cam Clarke (ENG) Hideyuki Tanaka (JP).)

Expression

His genuine smiles are always exaggerated, big and goofy, and always open, showing off his beautiful healthy white teeth; he is not one for subtlety when it comes to showing enthusiasm. The rare times a closed smile might appear on his face is perhaps in a silent polite panic, or even in intense anger; Alus somehow manages to never show a traditionally 'angry'-looking face to others, only one that resembles a forced or fake smile with an intense and vaguely threatening aura, in which times he tends to say strange things that are so vaguely passive-aggressive that it's difficult to tell if they were mean-spirited in nature to begin with. Besides these, Alus commonly shows expressions of irritation and suspicion rather regularly, all serious looks that feel a bit stone-cold. When Alus is alone, he is shown to often have a look of sadness, melancholy and sometimes irritation the most. As soon as he notices someone is looking at him, however, he will light right up with a welcoming and polite smile.
His body language is well-reserved, polite, and elegant-- but still expressive-- just not as loud or exaggerated as others may express themselves. He tends to be careful that he never invades someone elses' personal space in his glee or distraught, and if he does, he feels deeply regretful shortly afterwards. Most of his motions are slow and careful, smooth; like a ballet dancer or a ghostly butler. Yet he seems to entirely loose sight of his close proximity when wrapped up in his enthusiasm for finishing a battle or completing a difficult task, often bumping and/or crashing into other people, objects, or even walls and low ceilings in his absolute jumping joys. These situations arrive very often.
He has very rarely been seen acting out in physical motions of anger, such as intensely fuming or harming inanimate objects. He has, however, been well-known for participating in limp slapping fights with his brother nearly every time he meets with him.

Personality

Personality

Alus' personality could be described first and foremost as friendly and approachable, despite still being introverted and distant. He can show a very casual and goofy personality to acquaintances, cracking jokes or any other mannerisms that will make a person open up and smile, but he seems to have difficulty starting or keeping up a conversation with a stranger (being especially nervous around beautiful women.) On the surface, he is simple-minded and queer, content with speaking flowery poetry none other than that of the wind, whilst underneath the sunshine of his outer expression, he has a very serious personality when it comes to emotions and self-betterment, which usually comes as an unexpected surprise to new friends.
He has a strong sense of justice and loyalty to common legal laws and traditional morals. He appears to be the eternal optimist-- Even his enemies he wishes no true ill-will towards, and believes that anyone has the ability to be a better person, and that anyone absolutely deserve a second chance. However, Alus' thoughts on pacifism are often melancholy and somewhat pessimistic; He wishes that the life he leads could exist without any bloodshed, lamenting over his current path in life with the military Maelstrom. With the help of his brother he often manages to once again convince himself that bloodshed is necessary for an overall greater peace, but his heart wavers on the matter of pacifism quite often. It is difficult for him to accept that death is just how the world works. Overall, Alus seems to be less and less willing to kill as the moons pass, guiltily procrastinating with common hobbies. Arc seems less inclined to fight beastmen as well, now, making things even more difficult.
Alus is certainly not one to never get angry or impatient with others, but his outlook on negative social situations always end up the same after some contemplation; The past cannot be helped. Knowing what he knows now, he will aim to better work around these peoples' difficult personalities to bring the best out of them next time.
He has an unwavering platonic love for all in the world (excluding only slugs), and believes that love allows everything and everyone to be perceived as beautiful in their own way. This has probably fueled his obsession with fashion, music, art, and floriography; beauty equals love, and love equals happiness; which is Alus' personal philosophy.
Alus' trusting nature can sometimes get him in danger, but he accepts it as his sworn duty, and insists he truly does not mind this way of life.
Although he has gotten better as of late, he has a tendency to ramble on or talk a lot if he is not stopped. From subjects of comedic nonsense to deep philosophical discussion, Alus could talk for hours-- Even if he's not talking to anyone at all.
He tends to take planning very seriously, and might be the first to speak up about a potential plan in most situations, though he insistently open to discussion. He takes his sworn duties of personal moral code with utmost attention.

Religious Beliefs

"Well, what say you, Nald? Should I come by to check up on you once in awhile?" -Alus, upon visiting Nald's Reflection

Alus is a very religious person when it comes to Nald and Thal, and shows little or no interest to the other eleven deities of The Twelve. For several moons Alus trained under the teachings of Thal's funeral preparation in memory of his fallen friends in war. Although Alus feels less associated with Nald than he does with Thal, he feels he is blessed by both halves. As of late, Alus has been spotted praying at statues of Nald or Thal nearly every sun, taking careful care of their shrines.
However, Alus' behavior towards his deity could occasionally be seen as blasphemous. He seems to regard them as not much more than common equals to normal humans, though omnicorporeal and highly powerful. This might anger or irritate Nald'thal, though Alus' belief in his mutual "friendship" with the deity hardly ever wavers. He will lecture even the great Nald'thal when he believes the world has been imbalanced, and for the most part, he believes he is at least heard. He has both desecrated in anger and lovingly and carefully cleaned and kempt places of worship for Nald and Thal, fully devoting himself to the somehow realistic friendship of these invisible all-powerful beings. Regardless of his lack of god-fearing, Alus devotes his loyalty completely and utterly to Nald'thal, looking to the teaching of their churches for nearly all of his answers, even for small day-to-day things like love advice.

Battle Tendency

Although Alus is first and foremost a Paladin, his preferred class is actually that of Conjury. During important field missions he will more often than not leave a trail of sleeping monsters to finish his mission with the least amount of bloodshed possible. This often comes back to bite him (pun intended) as the monsters are more often than not still angry at him after they've woken up, making risks of being ambushed by a huge crowd of monsters at once very commonplace for Alus. This can sometimes be too overwhelming for him and he will abandon the mission entirely just to take a break; but only during solo play. When he is with a party, he will do everything in his power to protect everyone until the very end, even voluntarily provoking monsters with nothing more to protect him than cloth when he knows it'll help his party stay alive a little longer. Still, he will continue doing things the hard way for his own stubborn moral values, though is a little more lenient on these things when a party is supporting him. While not doing missions, Alus very much enjoys simply following strange adventurers around and helping heal them on their missions. He lives for the rush of healing 20+ adventurers during a field boss battle.
As a Paladin, Alus is masterful with his brother by his side. The amount of monsters attacking him at once while he is still able to look out for his companions' health and heal them is sometimes ludicrous. Alus' ears tend to close during these times, however, and his personality becomes serious and stressed out, every battle becomes a matter of complete and absolute importance to him-- He uses his full power and full arrange of accumulated techniques in nearly every battle, regardless of how seemingly easy it seems, making him very emotionally tired out by the end of it.
Alus has recently taken up martial arts as a way to help hone his body and mind with rigorous training. If he ever raises his fists towards a living enemy, his hands are always bare, protected only by his skin. His reasoning for learning these arts is technically pacifistic in nature; he believes that this is a much fairer and honest way to fight. Alus has picked up this style of martial arts from observing many different teachings, including that of the Thieves' Guild, a group his brother very much dislikes. ((Overall, Alus' style is very much like capoeira, combining dance with combat. If Dancer was a class, that's what Alus would be.))

Commonly Known History

Commonly Known History

Childhood

Alus and Arc were constantly accompanied by the traveling merchant Gwenneg Beauregard, who named them as his children. Outsiders viewed the family's relationship as close and happy, though still sometimes felt badly for Gwenneg's sole responsibility over two rowdy kids. Gwenneg never once complained; he was a man who smiled big and brightly nearly all of the time, he had a corny sense of humor and passion for telling fantastic fictional stories of princes and dragons, of which the children absolutely adored.

Teenage Years

After the disappearance of Gwenneg Beauregard due to the Calamity, the brothers effectively disappeared from view. It is unknown whether they were then taken care of another set of adopted parents, or who those parents might have been. At some point it would seem the brothers separated completely, in which time their personalities and appearances changed radically than when they were together.

Player Character Rumors

(( Feel free to add some!))
"I've never met a self-professed knight more intent on protecting his hair than on seeking out a damsel or two. Still, he bought every last copy of my failed pre-Calamity stylist's magazine; I'm not complaining." - Lord Kestle Roet, merchant prince.

RP Hooks

RP Hooks and Potential Connections

General

Alus, Arc and Gwenneg were seen traveling around a lot when the brothers were children. Older characters might have met Gwenneg at one point or another, before or after he adopted the children.
If your character has a criminal background, you might act nervous around Alus while he is wearing armor, as his appearance while wearing such is very obviously Paladin-like.
In contrast, if you're an aspiring Paladin or Knight, you could geek out at Alus in his Paladin wear a little bit. He'll love the attention, and will probably strike a pose and tell you to do good.
If your character is new at something, Alus will most definitely offer to help you learn about it, even if he is entirely unfamiliar with the subject. This is part of his self-sworn duty as a member of the Guiding Stars free company.
While Alus is wearing off-duty clothing, bringing up the subject of fashion is almost definitely a conversation starter.
Bringing up the subjects of floriography, tea, or sweets making. He loves discussing different meaning interpretations on the same flower, and he is currently in training to become an amateur tea master and cook.
Challenging his moral views. He'll probably lecture you a whole lot, but he wants to hear your views too.

Currently Looking For

IC
Alus is indeed single, but he has difficulty discerning the difference between a flirtatious personality and someone who is looking at him seriously. Be straightforward with him if you are actually interested. Love is something Alus takes very seriously and with great loyalty, though you can become the apple of his eye fairly easily if you make it clear to him that he has a chance to begin with.
People who enjoy social player events, whether it's going to them or organizing them.
Any newbies who need a little guidance. Alus' free company as a policy of "No questions asked" for joining and leaving his group, so you should feel free to ask for his help or even temporarily, or permanently, join for their services.
OOC
Folks who enjoy roleplaying while also doing something else, like adventuring in the field, taking a leisurely walk, gaming at the gold saucer, etc. I find this just generally more conversational and enjoyable for both parties to have something to actively remark upon.
RP that might be similar to the "Rapid-Fire" RP style; Folks who RP at near-realtime. This doesn't necessarily mean you have to be a fast typist, but I'd really appreciate if you at least used some sort of short-hand. For example; using default emote descriptions instead of manually written out ones, saying only a few words at a time, not bothering with symbols like quote/on-quote, or even not using absolute proper grammar. I feel like this style of RP is a lot more realistic, even if it's a lot less formal. That's not to say I'm against para-RP, it's just that it's slow pacing just tends to knock me off guard a lot~ Teach me, senpais!
People who are casual enough that they don't mind merging the game's fourth wall into their RP universe. Telling me to believe something obviously not possible within the game's mechanics is kind of frustrating to me, but making fun of someone's typo as accidentally slurred speech is fantastic.

TV Tropes

Appearance

The Fashionista - One of Alus' major interests and passions is fashion, to the point that it can become self-destructive on his wallet.
Long-Haired Pretty Boy - Self-explanatory.
Wholesome Crossdresser - Alus tried on a dress one day as a joke, but really liked how cute he looked in it. He becomes easily offended if someone accuses him of being Arc's girlfriend mistakenly.
Flower Motifs - Alus' famed flower hat and flower-themed accessories. Alus also carries around fresh flowers in his bag to give away to strangers.
Light Is Good - Alus feels that pastel or brightly-colored clothing comes off as friendly and cheerful.
Noble Male, Roguish Male - Arc and Alus' contrast in appearance and personality captures this trope to a T.

Personality

Sibling Yin Yang - Arc's wild, vulgar and pessimistic personality contrasts highly to Alus' polite, optimistic, and blindly trusting traits.
In Touch With His Feminine Side - Alus' interests of tea making, floriography, poetry, fashion, and pacifism are all traditionally more feminine traits. His appearance can also be called feminine.
Love You And Everybody - Alus is overjoyed at the concept of platonic love of his friends and comrades, and is actually really picky of who he deems worthy of real romantic attention. This can be confusing to his acquaintances.
All-Loving Hero - Just read the article.
Hidden Depths - On the surface, Alus comes off as bubbly, simple-minded and innocent, perhaps even stupid or slightly crazy to the more pessimistic mind. In truth, he makes a fantastic gritty philosophical discussion; he thinks every aspect of his morality and way of seeing life to the very last detail.
Stupid Good - Tends to let the law slip a bit in favor of friendliness and happiness. He's not unashamed about it. Perhaps he's even a little spineless, even if he fully believes in the law.
Large Ham - Alus models himself off of old fairytales of heroic knights in shining armor and Prince Charmings, and tends to prattle off heroic guidelines of self-care.
You Talk Too Much - Alus tends to worry about not conveying his words properly, so he just speaks more to make his point as clear as possible.
Goshdang It To Heck! - Alus finds vulgarity and adult swearing to be some of the worst violations of being a gentleman.
Why Did It Have To Be Snakes - Alus' intense dislike of slugs can sometimes hinder his missions.
Warrior Poet - Tends to overthink his morals.
Cloudcuckoolander - Alus' seemingly random topics of speech can come off as baffling to some people. His way of thinking can be unpredictable to others.
The Gambling Addict (which is a Compressed Vice) - Alus tends to get really worked up when a game of chance is presented to him, for instance at a carnival or faire. He tends to view most things in life also as a form of gambling, like goldsmithing, cooking, or even battle.
Reluctant Warrior - Technically a pacifist, but not a Technical Pacifist.
Declaration of Protection - Although mostly directed towards his brother (the only one he considers truly a close person to him) Alus always tends to put others' safety in battle before his own.
Cannot Talk To Women - Alus grew up around mostly men, leaving him rather ignorant of women. He tends to look up to and even maybe idolize women, making him very nervous to be around them.
Bare-Fisted Monk - Alus is training in martial arts to help hone his body and mind, and to cause less damage to others and more to himself as a punishment for inflicting pain to begin with. By extension, this trope is Heroes Fight Barehanded in this case.
Doesn't Like Guns - Alus doesn't have any backstory to this. He just really doesn't like the idea of being able to instantly kill someone at the pull of a trigger from a long distance. It's pretty ironic since he's associated with the Maelstrom.

Story

Bathos - Arc and Alus' story tends to fluctuate between constant comic relief and deep philosophical discussion of life and death. It's a balance like the scales of Nald'Thal.
Heroic Neutral - Alus procrastinates on fighting, avoiding responsibility altogether some days.
Conflicting Loyalty - Alus' conflict with having to use violence in order to solve problems in war the fastest way possible.
Smite Me, O Mighty Smiter! - At the falling of his comrades in war, Alus asks Thal if the balance is truly tipped equally in the world.
Unfit For Greatness - Alus set out the beginning of his journey to become a hero, but has realized that to achieve that he must hurt others, something he has a constant struggle with doing. Alus has extreme difficulty backing out of his high standing as a warrior in the military because his skills for fighting are highly valued.

Trivia

Alus and Arc's names come from the Final Fantasy III remake. Alus Restor, prince of Saronia, and Arc, one of the four Light Warriors, were considered to be close friends in the game.
The players behind Alus and Arc are not blood related 'in real life', in fact they've never physically met.
Although the characters of Alus and Arc Beauregard were created recently in 2.0, the players behind the characters have been playing Final Fantasy XIV on and off since 2010. Before that, they had been playing Final Fantasy XI on and off since roughly 2004, of which they first met in back in 2007. They were notoriously casual players, however, and never got far in the actual story quests of either games.
The initial inspiration for Alus' personality was based off of Judge Harold T. Stone from Night Court.
Alus often references Piros the 3rd from the .hack//G.U. games, including the phrase "May the stars shine upon you until the end of your journey!"
The names of Alus' two mounts, Erminia and Marion, are a reference to the 1986 manga Paros no Ken.

Alus can't remember native Miqo'te names.
Alus enjoys crossdressing 'for the fun of it', but does not openly publicly admit it to avoid ridicule.
Alus is supposedly a faster runner than Arc, but looses in a race regardless due to Arc's ridiculously skilled jumping ability.
