♦ General

Rothen Sails, at the very moment, is your typical working young adult that gets by with all that he can handle. Of course, he was born by the sea in La Noscea with his mother and father. Given his father was an officer of a crew, when he came of age he was taught how to be a sailor almost immediately. Soon enough, his talent with working the rigging of the sails shone throughout, and it wasn't long until he was a part of the merchant crew that his father was apart of. He was taught many things by his father during their trips before he has passed away, and he had a lot of wild, childish, but even true adventures as he learned many things of the sea at such a young age. His father, however, has died during the big event that has transpired five years ago that has lead to the destruction of most, if not all, of Eorzea. Currently being in Crescent Cove for a while after things riled up due to what went on, he had luckily survived without his father, whose location would be unknown. Being one of the survivors of said event, he had to go out on the world into his own, and of course, he had no choice but to initially help with everything that was going on in Ul'dah after all that. But soon enough, he became of his own, hanging around the fisherman and woman of Crescent Cove and helping about in the small space. Though, he did live in Ul'dah, and he made his living through marketing his fish most of the time. Though, that isn't what he wants to do. He remembers the glory days of him sailing with his father, going through the seas at an almost of an adventure. He, in a half-wit attempt to become a full-fledged adventurer, joins the Pugilist guild to try his hand at fist fighting, but he doesn't know what will become of him next. At least he knows his desire for a want of recognition.

♦ Appearance

His appearance is extremely simple and varies. Mostly sporting drab green clothing and an old bandana he used in the days of his adventures overseas, he doesn't wear anything special unless its truly on the occasion. He sports a dry, black, and unshaven stubble to signify his slight age and lack of wanting to cut his chin off. Under the bandana he also has black, short hair that, in the exact opposite, signifies his youth. He wears rather usual pants and shoes as well, but occasionally changes it up a bit, but other then the rare occurrence of a change of pace, he wears his usual dull clothing.

Recently however he has been wearing rather good looking coats as of late. Probably to hide some of a weapon or two.

♦ Behaviour

He behaves rather calmly most of the time, but due to being a big-time sailor, he always had a thing for beautiful women. Though, after having a home town of Ul'dah, somewhat known for its dancers (or maybe not so...), he has gotten very used to the sight of them. He doesn't seem to mind the usual off thing that happens in Ul'dah, but he usually stays out of harms way. He has this sort of uncanny luck for keeping out of harms way anyways, so that is a plus for him. He has no sense of meeting royalty, and never ventures past certain areas of the city, as accidentally meeting someone important for him might end up badly. Overall, he is a rather nice and collected person, and won't really get angry unless given a very good reason to do so.

But recently, he has been acting a lot more cocky and brave...

Combat

After a while of training within the Pugilist Guild, and actually being dedicated for once, he has gained a good amount of technique and skill that has ever-so been buried deep beneath him. Even though his true skill hasn't erupted from him yet, it seems he has a ways to go before matching up to certain others, but he seems strong enough to hold on to his own now.

But soon after, he finished his training in the Pugilist Guild, now surpassing most of his peers and having not much else to learn from the guild. He might seek to use a sword at one point, but he feels he won't be as dedicated now that his wanderlust is greater then ever.

But after leaving the Harbingers of Dawn, he took months out of his way to train with a blade. Now he's better then ever at both of the techniques given from being a Pugilist and a Gladiator. Now all that is left is to use these techniques in his adventures.

Now, as his travels take him a great forward, he sought to learn more then just fist and sword play. Due to a lack of adventure on his part, he's taken his time to learn a few things about the more dated gun-play, he himself thinking that his old moves were effective but an outdated way of combat. He now uses his keen eye and a dexterous hand to wield large guns, generally knowing how to shoot them and take care of them. Not only that, but he knows a thing or two about machines, now that he's gotten used to being around them. He sometimes even mixes his art from his other training that he'd been taught in combat.

And 2 years later, he completely denounced his old life. Living the life of a sellsword now, he has the style and grace of one, using thin blades of the east in conjunction with his own style of sword and gunplay, he allowed himself to become better at a lot of things over the past eight years.

Recently, he has finally decided that enough is enough from the boring work of a fisherman, and that he wanted to re-live the adventures that he has went on in his younger days. Soon enough, he started to attend the Pugilist Guild much more often, ignoring his need for Gil for a moment. He started to get worried, obviously, until an opportunity arrived, being delivered an invitation to a Free Company known as the Harbingers of Dawn. After a bit of research he knew they were a company of good will, and that they were to be adventurers who help Eorzea in whole. He took this simple Tavern Night invitation as a chance to join them, and gathered what Gil he had to travel to La Noscea in an effort to apply after the night. Luckily for him, it has went well, and he is now currently apart of a Free Company known as Harbingers of Dawn. Who knows of his future now?
A 'mission' has transpired within the Harbingers of Dawn. Not much can be said about it, but Rothen did go out for the first time in actual combat. It was rather harsh for him but luckily he went out fine, as he didn't go in with the main force. It seems as if it has affected a bit of his thought for a while, but it is something he will have to get used to eventually. However, going back to the estate, he felt cheerful that he at least went out on some sort of venture for the first time in his life. A milestone for him!
Due to a mysterious reason that involves Limsa Lominsa's Maelstorm Forces. Appropriately, he was questioned about a criminal pirate that was running amok around the seas. He soon figured out that the man was definitely his father with the information he was given, and was very on edge to find out that his father was alive after the Cataclysm. As soon as he was let go of, he decided to go out and look for him as he temporarily left the Free Company "Harbingers of Dawn." Of course, he made sure at least one person knows he was gone, but soon the whole word of it has gone out within. From there, he promised he'd set out and find his father, no matter what.
Finally, after a long trip across Las Noscea and reaching deep into a cove of pirates, he was captured by them despite his Pugilist skills. From there, he soon finds the leader of the pirate group in the cove, which also happens to be his father. His father at first denied that Rothen was actually his son, but soon enough he was convinced that he was. After letting him of his binds, they got back together and spoke to each other for a while, but even both of them couldn't shake the fact that Rothen's father was a wanted man. They parted their ways, knowing they wouldn't be able to meet again. Rothen gives his word that he would bat the eye of him, and he sets off back to Limsa Lominsa, feeling relieved that he was able to see his father again.
Rothen Sails returns to Ul'dah, realizing he needs more strength for what's to come as he goes back into the Pugilist Guild with open arms of welcome. However, there is a nagging feeling from him that keeps him at edge. He doesn't have the guts to return to the Harbingers of Dawn due to his suspicious actions that involved his father and the Maelstorm Forces. Not only that, but he was short on gil to even travel far due to his already-expensive travels. The only thing he can do is continue his old life in Ul'dah selling fish and training himself, for now.
Rothen Sails officially leaves the Harbingers of Dawn, being very detached from the Free Company due to his dedication to his training and not even able to join any sort of meetings or missions that would be brought. At this point, his training and dedication in the Pugilist Guild has hit a point where the guild has not much else to teach him. Rothen now trains others in the Pugilist Guild due to him learning everything it can offer at a rather fast pace. But he only does that as a past time. His wanderlust grows within him and his thirst for adventure has awoken long ago. But he just doesn't know where to start.
Rothen has been taught well during the last couple of months. He hasn't really interacted with anyone outside of Ul'dah lately; the only people he'd have interacted with is his masters in both the Pugilist's Guild and the Gladiator's Guild. As being in the Gladiator's Guild taught him, he started to get used to holding a blade very quickly and became an Intermediate Fighter of sorts. He doesn't like wearing armor sometimes, but his guild master thought it was a requirement to being a Gladiator. And so, as the months pass by, his thirst for the adventure he truly desires will come to him, as he starts looking for another Free Company. Maybe the Harbingers of Dawn might accept him again.
Rothen has now decided to take his time to learn new things, being actually bored with what he knows. He met a man not long ago that pointed out how he can learn 'The Wonders of the Machine', which was more akin to his tastes. But what the man more so meant was for combat, really. He sought out the man's pointer and met a group of wanderers of the machine, knowing that he was able to be invited to the group itself to learn more about how to use a gun, as well as how to take care of one. Soon after, he found his old style of combat outdated and embraced the way of the gun. Of course, the gun itself was bulky and is not fit for the close range combat that he is used to, but mixing his old style and this new style seems effective for him. But... All while learning these new techniques, his wanderlust grows to great lengths, now looking for another Free Company to have adventures with. Maybe now with his newfound knowledge of machinery and mechanical weapons, it might be more beneficial to him to be in one! (( OOC Note: I don't really know too well of the Machinist lore at the very moment / at the time of writing, so this event specifically is subject to change. ))
Rothen has ran into some troubles here and there, but recently he has grown and gained himself a bit less of his usual naive look, letting his hair grow to a rather good length and maturing quite a bit. His fighting styles are now rather expanse but nothing too specific in any field, and he feels himself as a jack-of-all-trades. Except with the use of magic, as he never actually delved into that too much. Either way, he has forgone his past and now looks to the future of mercenary, blade-for-hire work. Will he actually be able to succeed in his new way of living?
After 3 more years honing all three of his combative skills, he has now become a full fledged sell-sword, completely renouncing his old job of being a fisherman. Currently, his combat style is taught on his own, utilizing very well done swordplay with good physical prowess and a small gun. Sadly, he still hasn't found much of a job or anything really, so he mostly does things for the greater good of it all, thinking he might be able to change things for the better. His attitude did however change into a slightly more cocky one. His hair is also now dyed white as his own personal fashion statement, complimenting his red clothing. Even then his adventure is starting to unfold, and being trained so well after the 8 years between now and the calamity, he knows how to handle himself better then most sell-swords out there.

MomodiHe has always gone into the Quicksand for a drink or two, especially of ale. Even though Momodi picks him as the next few idle trader, he had always had been reeled in by her very specific gestures that she would make when she is excited for something, or even others so. He doesn't plan on talking to her about it with her anytime soon, however. He isn't important enough, among other things! But either way, the crush is still there, and she'll have a spot in his mind for a bit. Its a good thing he doesn't make this as noticeable, or else he'd be the next joke! Recently, he hasn't been to the Quicksand in forever. In fact, he hasn't been around Ul'dah for a while until recently, so this crush isn't as much as it was before. Heck, after a long time, he has gotten used to it.

Acquaintances

Jihl WilzuunJihl is someone he has met and kept in his mind for a while during his stay with the Harbingers of Dawn. She's a rather helpful Miqo'te, and that's only just an understatement. To his eyes, she helps out too much, and he has wanted to return the favor many times as he would not be used to such accommodations. He is, as usual, extremely grateful for what she is doing, and even tries to make up for it sometimes. Either way, he feels rather odd talking to her at times with her shy personality and all, but he feels rather happy around her for an odd reason...

Rumours

"Rothen? Ah, tha' fine fisherman is the one you talk about. He seems to be more trustworthy than anyone around here, but that's pretty much all I can say about him. He doesn't talk much unless ye make him. Dunno why he keeps to himself like that... Though, I haven't seen him in a -long- time." -Crescent Cove Fisherman
"Oh, Rothen! He returned not long ago and is still going strong! He used to be one of our surprise star students! I mean, who would believe that someone like him would just turn up and push himself to further heights... I mean, mayhap I was correct! He did have a fire burning beneath him, but what exactly woke it is a mystery... But it's glad to have him back!" -Pugilist's Guild Member
"A true Gladiator Rothen is. He fights valiantly on the field too when he goes. But I don't know... the man's all hard work and no play almost all the time. But if I were to have a soldier like him being at my side, I'd be greatful." -Gladiator's Guild Member
"Mm? Him? Don't think I've heard much of him. He's rather popular around Uldah for surpassing a lot of mentors around the place, but he's been doing his own thing as far as I know. Well... if you really want to know though, he still has a bit of trouble following his wake sometimes. Something about an old band of pirates and misfits or something." -Shady Information Broker
