Biography
‘The Lucky Hare Inn’ was not the most popular tavern in Rabanastre, but to its patrons, it was the most beloved. The Inn was run by a diverse family; the Viera matriarch and proprietress Madam Cha, her Rabanastre born husband, a set of male triplets before finally there was the youngest son, Taeyong. Taeyong’s birth was not easy, the child being born premature and blind in both eyes. Where his siblings spent much of their time helping their mother in the kitchen, Taeyong was on the street, his mother viewing his disability as not suitable for work. His father, however, was a conjurer who passed down the knowledge of the elemental arts to Taeyong, teaching him to use the elements to defend himself and better sense the world. Unfortunately, Taeyong would only use these abilities to get up to no good, especially in Lowtown of what would eventually become Garlean-occupied Dalmasca.
Unfortunately, Taeyong would only use these abilities to get up to no good, especially in Lowtown, a smaller settlement in Dalmasca known for its criminal activity. The boy quickly found himself in the company of pirates, the most notable being the information broker known only as Mink. Becoming Mink’s apprentice, Taeyong spent his early teens learning from the pirates, using information as a weapon as well as stealing goods by posing as a banker. That is until Mink and Taeyong were discovered by Garlean authorities. Mink’s fickle nature spurred him to flee without Taeyong, leaving the boy at the mercy of the Empire. His late teens would be spent in the Nalbine dungeons.
Forced into a corner and his youth in chains, Taeyong turned on his former comrades and became an information broker himself. He used the knowledge he had gleaned to bargain and manipulate the other prisoners, slowly gaining notoriety and infamy. The guard regularly stationed outside of his cell, the female miqo'te Gayah, caught wind of his dealings, but refused to turn him in. Instead, after Taeyong had gotten into a spat with a pirate slaver in the dungeons, Gayah used the commotion to help Taeyong escape, fleeing with him through Barheim Passage. Gayah was a Garlean conscript, but Taeyong also learned of her past as a former slaver herself, supplying the Garlean trade of laborers. Despite this, he stayed by her side, going into hiding with her.
The two made off as stowaways on a Mercatus-class airship before they hijacked it, making their way to the port city of Hingashi, Kugane. Continuing their life as pirates, they worked together in the underbelly to funnel Garlean weaponry to trafficking rings. One notable contact was the Ilsabardian Hrothgar, Olena, who was able to move shipment discretely through the tightly controlled docks. Eventually, as the war died down to a simmer, Taeyong was forced to adapt. He partnered with Olena, working as a private investigator through his late twenties. So too did Taeyong and Gayah's bonds grow. After four years, they were married, eventually producing a daughter named Aejung.
It was a short three years later when Gayah vanished. Putting every ounce of his experience as a pirate, investigator and broker to task, Taeyong and Olena were forced into surviving on the Ruby Sea, discovering that Gayah had a sizable bounty on her head as a defector to the Garlean Empire. Taeyong resorted to using every trick he knew, going as far too ally himself with local pirates and even the bounty hunters after his wife’s head. After several long years, the trail eventually lead him to the bangaa known as Waggi of the Sanga, a sky-pirate bounty hunter of some renown in Nagxia on the hunt for the Garlean traitor. They were particularly known among Dalmascan and Nagxian resistance cells as the leader of the Midnight Sun Unit.
To his horror, Taeyong learned of his wife’s death at the hands of a growing cult within Dalmasca, the Church of Faram. Waggi and their crew assisted Taeyong with the following confrontation with the Church, which was long thought buried under Garlemald's oppressive law. After the assassination of the sect leader responsible for Gayah's death, Taeyong remained an ally to the Midnight Sun Unit, but opted to follow the advice of Olena to travel to the West. It was not without risk, but it was certainly with profit.
Personality
Attitude
He is rather deadpan and snide, with a rather limited sense of dry humor, leaving him to come across as rude occasionally. There are few things he won't have some kind of commentary for, whether it involves him or not, albeit he'll most often take a neutral standpoint in things. Meanwhile, he hates the idea of fighting unless there's a valid reason to.
Sociability
While he unintentionally appears to be disinterested a lot of the time (which is partly a result of his lack of expressiveness), getting involved socially with others isn't a challenge to him anymore, as much as it was to him as a child due to his disability. He's quite approachable, as well as a good listener, both figuratively and literally.
Expressiveness
This is limited, somewhat due to his demeanor and also because of his visual limitations, causing him to use facial expressions and gestures less often than others as he himself can't read them. Despite this, he doesn't hesitate to inform others of his opinions vocally.
Notes & Trivia
- He is totally blind in both eyes as a result of retinopathy of prematurity (stage 5) as he was born premature and had a very low birth weight. Otherwise, he is currently healthy.
- He has a scar over his left eye, given to him in a scuffle with a Bangaa gunbreaker. He also has bold black tattoos across his back and upper arms.
- Taeyong is a lacto-ovo-vegetarian, meaning he'll eat dairy and eggs but no meat. His least favorite foods include noodles and peppers. He doesn't like the texture of the former and the taste of the latter.
- His favorite foods include nopales, cactus fruit, carrots, and kale.
- He speak and reads Eorzean Common, some High Ivalician, Nagxian, and Hingan.
- Taeyong is familiar with the Common form of braille. He also uses a brailler between him and his allies; a form of typewriter that puts braille on paper. He has two; one for the Eorzean alphabet and one for Dalmasca's. He can also read raised or indented letters on surfaces.
- Taeyong carries two canes; one for both combat and navigation use, as well as one purely for navigation. He uses vibrations in aether to get around.
