He came aboard a ship, like so many others, many moons ago-- upon one of the first vessels carrying refugees from a war-torn Othard to the shores of Eorzea. He kept his head down, his lips tight, and at first he all but disappeared into the new continent's thick and booming crowds, little more than another peculiarly scaled face in the wave of that at-first peculiar race of Au Ra. Though it wasn't long until he'd made something of a mediocre name for himself as a capable sellsword-- still just one more muscle-for-hire among the many... albeit a boisterous, hot-tempered one-- it was clear from the start  that no one truly knew the man behind the friendly grin, no matter how many hours were spent cajoling with him in the local tavern or on the street. As Eorzeans came to better know and grow accustomed the Xaela and their Raen brethren who arrived in droves from their bloodied homeland, Arik began to find blending in with his own kind to be a no longer effective means of camouflage, for soon he was sticking out like a sore thumb-- not an Eorzean and yet not quite a conventional Au Ra, but rather little more than a rag-tag excuse for either with his bizarre way of speaking and mannerisms that often color him as well below polite society, be it in a civilized society nor tribal sense.

Arik (pronounced /'AH-rick'/) is an Auri mercenary of Xaela descent who arrived on Eorzea aboard one of the earliest ships carrying Othard refugees. As soon as he had stepped foot upon foreign ground, however, he made quick work in establishing himself as an eccentric warrior, drunkard, and renowned trouble maker-- a far cry in behavior to his Auri brethren (both Raen and Xaela alike)-- but a surprisingly skilled and effective sellsword all the same. While he had spent the first several months on Eorzean soil stubbornly working as a loner, actively refusing to work alongside any group that came his way, he nonetheless earned himself a bit of name among those interested in his field of work. Using the moniker of "Arik Nergui" (which translates to "Arik No-Name"), he rarely identifies himself as part of any tribe-- avoiding the subject like a terrible plague-- and tends to perpetuate a subtle air of mystery about himself, something that is purposely veiled beneath a boisterously brash and carefree front that only very few bother to see beyond.

Appearance & Personality

There is no arguing that Arik is a big guy, even by Auri standards, as he carries a stature about himself that acts as a statement for his expertise in wielding massive, two-handed axes. Years spent on the frontlines of various conflicts whilst brandishing such large weapons has resulted in a strong, carved physique and an impressive menagerie of scars mottling tanned, ashy flesh at nearly every angle where various patches of his scales have been worn away and chipped from battle. He keeps his brown-blonde hair long, often too careless to consider cutting or styling it beyond a windswept quality and a few braids that manage to keep the bulk of it out of brightly colored yellow eyes. His scars provide an additional testament to his style of dress-- only rarely opting for heavy plate whenever a job calls for the extra protection, but otherwise preferring lighter fabrics and leathers which he finds to be cooler as well as easier to move in.
Arik comes across as relatively friendly and boisterous, often carrying himself with a devil-may-cry attitude and a tendency toward either starting or somehow involving himself in trouble around every corner. He spends the majority of his free time drowning himself in liquor either in or nearby Taverns, making friendly acquaintances and otherwise coming across as a spontaneously lackadaisical sort who truly lives for the moment. Yet these first impressions are fickle at best, as the mercenary makes a point to keep people at arm's length. His careless behavior is really but a facade only very few are allowed to see beyond, used to conceal a sense of self-derision and plaguing guilt that seems to follow him wherever he goes. In addition to this, it doesn't take very long for those who encounter him to realize he has a rather short temper, especially in regards to certain touchy subjects. Though he may attempt to convince others that he is a self-absorbed, opportunistic sellsword, he is really fooling nobody more than himself. Ever since coming to Eorzea and eventually joining forces with Seren Blackbourne and her friend, S'Kalkaya Raha, it is clear that deep down he harbors an active desire to do right and to seek redemption for whatever darkness checkers his past... Though he'll never admit to it aloud.

History

Arrival

What was known about the man, however, was that his services as a mercenary were plenty worth the gil even if his practices were somewhat unorthodox. For one, he was known for being particularly selective about the jobs he took... Especially for a refugee who couldn't possibly afford more than a single meal every few days (and whose growling stomach would regularly attest to that.) Moreover, he would often react with great disdain, even anger, at any idea of a group or company for whom to represent; regular pay or not. Still, in the matter of discretion, many employers found his singular nature to be a boon for their own privacy in regards to the work they put forth, and so his work was not entirely without luck.

Seren Blackbourne
Despite a rocky beginning in which the two regarded one another simply as a means to an end, it was not long into their professional arrangement that the they began to form an unlikely friendship and even more unlikely affection between the torrents of childish bickering and fevered arguments that at first characterized their interactions. Though Arik finds Seren to often be too stiff and uptight-- concealing the kinder, stifled young woman that he has caught a glimpse of a few times in private-- he has since found himself so drawn to the Hyuran Conjurer to the point of deep seated and romantic inclinations. While the concept of such a connection is relatively foreign to the man-- having only known meaningless one-night stands or mild, unpursued interests in the past-- the interest has proven more than mutual.
Kagerou Kusabi
Arik met the young Raen girl purely by happenstance. Though he found her to be rather innocent and naive at first glance, he has since developed a close knit friendship with the girl. Arik saw in Kage a girl with the best of intentions but so little of the know-how she would need to survive the streets. He cares for her like a younger sister, one to protect from the dangers he knows personally to exist. Conversely, she offers him a variety of affection and support he has never been accustomed to.
Novik Tumet
Arik was recently reunited with his estranged older brother after having believed him dead or gone for the greater part of a decade. Though their first time meeting was anything but pleasant at first-- involving the two nearly killing each other over a misunderstanding and a trunk full of illicit substances-- they were quick to cease their assaults once recognition set in. Since then, Novik has been living near the core group at Bronze Lake. Though Seren is not the man's biggest fan, he and Arik have hit it off and are as close as ever, despite their years apart.
S'kalkaya Raha
Seren's close friend, the two of them are as inseparable as sisters. Despite her spunky and outrageously energetic antics, Arik considers the Miq'ote a friend and someone to respect for her surprising amount of skill in Thaumaturgy. Though he is not necessarily close to the girl, he remains content to work alongside and protect her.
Una Daalhei
Though Arik is not intimately familiar with the Summoner Keeper, he appreciates her as a close friend to Kagerou who has been actively helping the Raen adapt to Eorzean ways. She has proven to be very intelligent and analytical, and though Arik is often completely lost as to what she is talking about most of the time, he respects her all more for it.
Rin Naeuri
Another Raen whom Arik has only met two or three times in the past. He has never spoken at any great length with her, but she seems to get along with the other girls whom he is close to.
Quiet Mouse
A strong, female Roegadyn who seems to often be in Rin's company. She seems tough as nails and though they have rarely spoken, Arik wouldn't mind starting a bar brawl with her some time.
