<big>Benedict, “Ben” to his friends, has always been a simple man with simple desires and pleasures. He grew up on the dirty streets of Pearl Lane in Ul’dah being raised by his grandmother. His parents had both decided early on that they were not ready to be parents and left him in her care never to return. Every day his grandmother would load up a wagon of shawls, blankets, and other assorted articles of clothing she had made and they would trek down to the Vesper Bay docks and sell her wares to the people getting off and on the boats. He still holds very fond memories of playing there as a child. He was barely a decade old when his grandmother passed away and with no means to make a decent wage he was forced onto the streets. For several years he survived barely by a combination of begging and small time thievery until he picked the pocket of an off duty guard, Alfred Adaris.

Adaris took pity on the boy and decided the best way to help the boy was to give him direction and a means of providing for himself. Adaris took Ben to the gladiatorial arena and there he got him his first job. Ben was given a cot and a small wage, but enough to get by, and in return he was to clean up the lower levels as well as polish and maintain the armory for the competitors. Over the next few years Adaris would come by quite often to check on Ben and the two became as brothers. After a time Ben was able to save up and take lessons from the fighting masters of the arena. When word spread of the Garlean invasion both Ben and Alfred eagerly signed up to join the Immortal Flames.
