Calus was mauled and fatally poisoned by a rather large rabid Malboro during a bout of mushroom gathering one day. It was quick and unsuspecting... and frightening enough to burn into memory. Though he survived the attack after a miraculous rescue from another adventurer, who then took him to an infirmary stat, the poison had seeped too deep for the assisting conjurers at hand. Through normal means, Esuna could purge poison, but this particular Malboro was extremely potent. One would question if an experiment was involved.

He didn't want to die. Calus told his family his wishes and they sought out an Alchemist who provided a means to continue living. Though his biological form would be gone, he could possess an automaton and given a skin in the likeness of his original form. That skin would be resistant to the common elements , but alchemic potions were needed for more extreme temperatures. Likewise, said potions, were also needed to enjoy food again (though it wasn't necessary). With the help of an engineer and a parts collector from Azys Lla, the automaton creation was a success. Calus was able to live on in this form, albeit inferior and superior to his past, forever tied to the "death". He decided to dedicate his life to seeing the world and becoming all that he could be, much to his family's concerns. He needed to appreciate, once more, the joys of living.

Calus retains his memories of recognizing situations based on emotions, though cannot directly feel it. Only imitation feelings. He cannot cry, express intense hatred, feel pain, etc. (something he's had to adjust to). Alchemy potions are needed to prevent absolute system shutdown and thus, expelling his soul into the spirit realm. Minor potions allow him to enjoy food again by activating special tongue receptors, linking them to his essence. Digestion involves an installed food processor that, like a kitchen gadget, cuts all food into smaller portions to be delivered into a chamber that collects in a bucket, which is to be emptied and cleaned every night. Potions are used also for cleaning and sterilizing.
