Appearance

"The Red Waters" by rregret

At first glance, one's eyes would most likely fixate on the large scar running across the left corner of Eckerd's lips, located just above the strong jawline that's arguably had to withstand a punch or two in its day, and surrounded by a thick five o'clock shadow. Included on his list of "most distinguishable features" are the ginger hair and the easily noticeable infestation of devilish freckles along the bridge of his nose and cheekbones, effectively taking up what little space remains inside the bullseye of his face. There is, of course, also a particular tattoo. But we don't talk about the tattoo. Ever. He sure doesn't.

While perhaps not the largest Highlander in town, Eckerd still manages to stand around a head taller than your average person, with his broad shoulders and rather solid physical state only adding to his menace level if ever encountered in a dark alleyway. His arms, as well as the muscles on his pair of legs, each tell the story of a life spent around tireless footwork and vigorous thrusts. A lancer's story.

Understandably, Eckerd rarely puts too much effort into what manner of clothing he'll be wearing on his everyday outings. Heavily biased towards practicality over formality, and with little to no gil to spare for fancy clothes, it's only natural that he be seen in outfits more fit to an expedition or a recon mission than to a gentle stroll along the beaches of La Noscea. Under the moonlight. With someone spe- Hah! Not happening.

Traits

Personality

Enjoys

  • A large variety of cigars, having no personal favorites of his own.
  • Exploring new places and the feeling of grand adventure.
  • Romantic novels with enough cheese to provide for the breakfast buns of an entire Imperial Invasion Force.
  • Sweets, including - yet not restricted to - licorice and dark chocolate.

Avoids

  • Glory hogs and bootlickers.
  • Large crowds and overall gatherings of people in vast numbers.
  • People with unreasonably high expectations.
  • Surprises. Surprises are bad.

Hobbies and Interests

  • Falling down from high places and hurting himself. A lot. May include profanity and salty tears.
  • Haggling. Because prices on things are simply too overblown sometim-... most of the time.
  • Reading. Obviously.
  • Wrestling and other forms of hand-to-hand combat.

Skills

Climbing. Having grown up surrounded by the mountains of Gyr Abania - and later the lush forests of the Black Shroud - it's safe to say that the most foolproof way of locating Eckerd Aldenport is to keep one's eyes firmly locked upwards. Note: Not recommended while in the close proximity of cliffs and/or other environmental hazards.

Combat. When faced with the possibility of permanent death, or at the very least, permanent mutilation, Eckerd tends to place his faith in the hands of a sturdy lance - or a polearm of a similar fashion - whenever possible. Combined with a healthy dose of physical strength and years of experience in the field, this twenty-something sellsword has established himself as anything but a pushover. His rather unorthodox fighting style, while not unique in any meaning of the word, is essentially a mixture of the raw brutality often displayed by the gladiators of Ul'dah, and the grace with which the lancers of Gridania maneuver themselves around a battlefield. The result being a reckless, yet potentially destructive, style centered around a multitude of swings and thrusts, infused with hand-to-hand practices and bone-crushing kicks, that serve the sole purpose of ending a fight before it's even truly begun. This, however, results in a significant over-reliance on offensive strikes, which tends to leave him open for attacks whenever his momentum begins fading during a prolonged confrontation. Chainmail, as cumbersome as it can be in comparison to good leather, has saved his sorry hide more times than he can count - or dares to admit - which has solidified its status as his go-to type of armor for any encounter imaginable.

Flaws

Foolhardy. "Wrestling a Roegadyn? You betcha! Scaling a dangerous mountain in the middle of the night? Absolutely! Making sure to tend to your equipment so it doesn't fall apart mid-combat? Pfft! Nooope." There's courageous people... and people like Eckerd Aldenport with little to no care in the world for their own well-being. Simply put; morons with a death wish.

Socialising. Ever since leaving home with his brothers at the age of fifteen, there's hardly been a time for Eckerd to truly grow his social skills and knowledge amidst all the endless adventures and unrelenting training, which is painfully evident in both his anxious behavior in crowded places, as well as during more personal conversations between two people. Especially so if the opposite gender is involved, since reality is hardly portrayed accurately in the romantic novels he's been reading during the years to - at the very least - have some sort of understanding on how one's expected to act and behave whilst in feminine company. This constant feeling of expectations piling up on his shoulders whenever he's out and about in the world is one of the biggest reasons to said social anxiety, and has a habit of frustrating him to no end, much to his own personal dismay.

💀 Garth Aldenport - "My life's never meant as much to anyone. And he paid the price for it." The eldest of the Aldenport brothers, Garth was the glue that kept the three of them together through the worst and best of times, with his tragic demise causing a falling out between the remaining two of his brothers. Well known as the charismatic leader of the group by a good chunk of the Shroud's populace.

💀 Matias Aldenport - "We never got the chance to talk things out, huh..." Garth's younger brother and the former tactician of the group, Matias was the first to leave prior to Garth's passing, and the first of the Aldenport brothers to start a family of his own. His wife, Seleucia, worked as an alchemist in the close vicinity of the brothers' usual tavern of choice, which is where they first met each other. They would later end up buying a house for themselves, as well as the child Seleucia was carrying, located not too far from Quarrymill. Died during the Calamity.

Seleucia and Léon Aldenport - "She's family, and so's the kiddo. I'll watch over 'em for you, Matty. I swear." The wife and son of Matias Aldenport. While maintaining a good relationship with all of her children, she always remained passive during Paulus' beatings and harsh treatment of the three, choosing to focus on her work rather than to get involved.
