History
Discovered as a baby on the doorsteps of an orphanage in Doma, with no word of who left him there, nor why. The Orphanage Matron named him Ikuri Aratani, meaning "a new life".
Ikuri's childhood was like most others in the orphanage, he played, learned to read and write, and had very few pleasures. The only difference being his frequent, and undiagnosed heart condition that often left him very ill. It wasn't until Ikuri was around ten years old that a young and inspired Garlean machinist, who has defected from the military, discovered Ikuri by chance at the orphanage and saw one of Ikuri's seizures.
Vowing to do something to help the child, as much for the child as for his own personal curiosity, he set to work on a magitek device that would help prevent the seizures, and protect Ikuri's life. He adopted Ikuri during this time, and taught him many things about machinery and the workings of ceruleum powered devices. Ikuri took a while to get the hang of it, but grew to be quite adept at crafting.
As time went by Ikuri's condition worsened, his seizures each more life threatening than the last. His adopted father knew that there wasn't much more time to research and developed a crude device that would shock Ikuri's heart into resetting when arrhythmia set in. The device saved Ikuri's life, and allowed him to live for another fourteen years without any major life threatening attacks. The only problem was keeping a stable supply of ceruleum to power it, but Ikuri always had a knack for negotiation. As a young adult, Ikuri found business making and maintaining machinery and general everyday items and settled into a comfortable life. When the Garleans invaded Doma, his adopted father was captured and Ikuri fled with the refugees to Eorzea.
It is here that his new chapter begins.
