Character

"Dear _____, I've met you once before..."

First Impressions

White paint made of a hunted kedtrap and powder. Turn to her left, and you will see that she has cut a portion of her hair- her destiny. Her face is softened with youth, searching seen in her hazel eyes. Her voice is soft, as if mixing itself into the wind.
You hear it. She is alone.

Appearance

Standing at 5"3, the Hyuran woman stands tall in open spaces. White paint, made of Kedtrap serum mixed with powder, marks her face and she wears it with pride, a lasting memory of her home colony. Her softened chocolate eyes are filled with resolve as her fair skin glows lightly beneath the moonlight. Her lips are a light peach, soft with a rather light gloss.
Her long raven hair falls to one side, cut on the other. With resolve, Itsu had cut her hair following a failed attempt to kill who is now her chocobo, Qin'jirah, during their first encounter as per required by her In'uljah trial. As a sign of her bond with her bird, on her head she often wears a chocobo feather: the fallen feather from her bird's first molting.

Personality

As Itsu was raised in what is now known as The Burning Wall, the girl knows very little about city life, hence she often calls people "city people." Perhaps her upbringing in Gridania was a better environment; she is very attuned to wind aether, therefore will spend as much time as she can outdoors. She gets rather unsettled indoors, especially rooms with limited space and/or without windows. "I cannot feel the wind here" is not an uncommon utterance from her mouth. She feels most at ease in wide, open outdoor spaces such as The Black Shroud.
The girl is also rather shy, quiet at first. Around people she does not know, she prefers to speak very little. Much like a wallflower, she would much rather observe than speak. However, take a chance to approach her and she will be very interested in those she converses with. Itsu will speak primarily when spoken to, however as she begins to ease herself into circumstances, she will talk more than one would think. Normally Itsu would enjoy speaking about her home, Darjin, however given her missing home colony, she has spoken very little about it as of late.
Solace is found in caring for others. Itsu will always be vocal about the well-being of others, especially her wife, Yumi Hikaru, who is victim to the girl's constant nagging. Itsu is very, very, very vocal about Yumi's safety. If you ask her about the time she fell down a mine shaft literally seconds after telling Yumi to be careful you will probably evoke an extremely rare, dark piercing glare from the gentle girl. Her wife is no exception to this.
The Hyuran girl will also care for others, whether she shows it or not. This is especially for those whom have earned her wife's trust, who then receive a lesser barrage of "Please be careful" or "You don't make healing very easy, do you?". It is also known that Itsu will be very vocal and defensive if she notices Yumi is upset, quickly distrusting whoever angers/provokes her wife.

Wind

For starters, Itsu has a rather high aetherical sensitivity, having trained and lived in Gridania. She has been recognized as a Conjurer who is a Hearer of the elementals of the Twelveswood. While she cannot hear the will of the elementals outside of The Black Shroud, she still tries to listen to the "feelings" of the elements around her. In particular, she is especially fond of observing wind patterns, shown in her preference for wide, open spaces. The girl will attempt to read feelings (ex. harsh, distressed winds as "unhappy") of the wind around her.

Triggers

Brayflox's Longstop - The run down houses of the Longstop materializes Itsu's very fear: the possibility that her entire society has been slaughtered. As the huts are similar to the structures used in Darjin pre-Calamity, Itsu finds the place unnervingly similar to her now-lost home. While she has a quiet personality, she will begin to panic at the thought of her village destroyed in a similar fashion to the Longstop. It is noted during her first meeting with Xai Hikaru that if provoked enough, she will let her repressed emotions leak through, invoking sadistic tendencies.

Relationships

"Our fates are intertwined..."

Lover

Yumi Hikaru: Her significant other. Though unsure why, Itsu feels a strange familiarity with her.

Family

Xa’in Neir: Missing mother
Kibotosek Neir: Missing father
Jikun Neir: Brother (currently on In'uljah)
Chocobo: Qin'jirah (Piidii)

Friends

Iris Blanchimont: Free Company colleague. Iris had confided her trust in Itsu and Yumi. To reciprocate this trust, Itsu has sworn to protect her in return.

Acquaintances

Taji Tribal: Formally met at Free Company post-Void Ark. She currently knows her as the Mi'qote who danced so hard she fell through the Mist docks.
Shou Han: Met at Arche Koeln before departing, doesn't know her quite well yet.

Enemies

Xai Hikaru: Met at Brayflox's Longstop. Yumi's Brother. Normally Itsu would think higher of him simply because he is her wife's brother, however tensions and arguments from their last encounter have left a sour taste in her mouth.
Zinot Risus: Met at Void Ark, formally acquainted at Free Company. First impressions were terrible as he provoked Yumi's anger, and she still holds a partial grudge due to their first meeting. This distaste for him intensified following their adventure to The Wanderer's Palace.

History

"There once was a place I used to know..."

Darjin

Darjin. A once small colony located in what is now called The Burning Wall. Those in poverty and the working class determined to escape the social confines of Uldah learned the ways of survival. The elders sought to keep its generations in secret, spared the harsh ways of the Thanalan rich and, even more, the dying. Stolen food and stocked belongings lasted the community for a year, a time that saw much turmoil and unrest among the group. However, the late Pipili Pilu took upon herself leadership within the colony and established the colony's laws with a band of consultants chosen from both homeless and working class. As a precaution for future survival, the Depakka and In'uljah trials were introduced for children born into the colony.
Nothing is known of what happened to the colony following The Calamity, however only remnants and painful memories are left behind. Now littered with pieces of Dalamud, what was once Darjin is now infested with Mirrorknights.

Depakka

The Depakka is the Darjin children's first hunt at the age of 6. The duration of a Depakka lasts 24 hours. Each child hunts a monster in Eastern Thanalan while under the supervision of their assigned hunting instructor, usually a parent or a person who has returned from their In'uljah without a chocobo foot. Females hunt one month before the males as they begin their hunting training earlier. After a successful hunt, candidates and their supervisors return to the colony with a bottle of blood or serum. After both females and males have hunted, they are all marked at the Blood Marking Ceremony, in which children's faces are painted with a mixture of powder and the collected blood by their instructors. The adults pick the colour of the markings, each colour marking a blessing or fortune that they have for their student.
Those who had unable to complete their hunt are abandoned in the wilderness.

In'uljah

The In'uljah is a coming of age ceremony set in place by the late Pipilu Pilu and her consultants shortly after the establishment of Darjin. At the young age of 12, children are exiled from the colony, required to survive in the wilderness on their own. They are required to bring treasures from the world back to the colony, artifacts to provide education for those preparing for the Depakka hunt. One of these required treasures is a chocobo foot, which will then be hung above the family's home to indicate to the rest of the colony that a son/daughter who is ready to be wed has returned safely from their In'uljah trial. Common practice is one who returns without a foot becomes a hunting instructor for Depakka candidates and is not allowed to marry. A person's In'uljah requires a minimum of 3 years in exile, and the longest trial is documented at 15 years.

Itsu

Itsu was born to the missing Xa'in (née Tchyarun) and Kibotosek Neir, and is the sister of Jikun Neir, brother that is 3 years her senior. A fair majority of Darjin knew of her: she was the granddaughter of Darlin Tchyarun, a member of the Consult of Darjin. Within her family, Itsu was often nicknamed Dandelion, after the flower that blooms white air-borne seeds.

Darjin Life

Family
She has fond memories of her brother, Jikun, who had taught her to make stone spears following his Depakka hunt. The two were almost never found without one another. When preparing for her own hunt, Itsu had spent countless nights staying up late with her brother, confiding in him her anxiety that she would disappoint their mother, her hunting supervisor. Her would often tell her stories of what he thought chocobos looked like to cheer her up before the two of them fell asleep. At the end of his Depakka, Jikun gives the stone head of his hunting spear to his sister, tied to a string, as a sign of good luck. The only time anyone had seen Itsu cry was when Jikun departed for his In'uljah. Ever since, she has been a quiet individual.
Depakka
Itsu had chosen the wooden staff as her choice of hunting weapon. Her hunting instructor was her mother, Xa'in Neir, who had also studied to become a conjurer in Gridania during her own In'uljah. Itsu had stumbled her victim Kedtrap after losing sight of her mother late at night. The young girl had tripped over the Kedtrap's root, already panicked at the thought of not completing her hunt. She ran beside a nearby tree, chased at high speeds. With quick thinking while in hiding, she tied her brother's spearhead onto the bottom of her staff. The Kedtrap was slain as her mother had relocated her.
Xa'in chose to paint her daughter's face white, the colour that represented Safety.
In'uljah
Itsu had departed on her In'uljah with nothing but her mother's smile and her father's embrace. Her memento spearhead had been left behind, hung on her family's heirloom wall. She departed for the trial in the year 1570. She failed to obtain a chocobo foot; the same bird she had nearly killed is her current partner.

Calamity/Post-Calamity

The Disappearance of Darjin
Even to this day, Itsu does not know what has become of her home, Darjin. During the calamity, Itsu had hid in Gridania, already under the instruction of E-Sumi-Yan at the Stillglade Fane. With the Padjal's permission, she had taken a momentary leave from her studies to venture back to Darjin following the Battle of Carteneau and the destruction of Bahamut. Upon returning to the cove, she found countless shards of Dalamud littering her home. She could not make out much of the debris, however no bodies were found. Itsu is continuously on a search for her people.
Qin'jirah (Piidii)
Once night, a year following the start of her In'uljah trial, Itsu had encountered a traveling merchant, resting with his chocobo. The girl had lured the chocobo away from its owner in hopes of capturing it to claim its foot. However, Itsu quickly reconsidered her actions, realizing that this bird was genuinely terrified. Noticing the look in the bird's eyes, she left a shallow scratch in its beak before abandoning it out of shame.
Years later, during her studies in Gridania, she was offered a chocobo by the Twin Adders following a series of tasks she had done for the Grand Company. Itsu quickly noticed the scratch on the beak of the chocobo introduced to her. Though they had a rocky start, Itsu and her chocobo have developed a close relationship with each other. She is often seen wearing one of her bird's molted feathers in her hair.
The chocobo's name is Qin'jirah, the name of the imaginary chocobo in young Jikun's bedtime stories. However, Itsu often calls the bird Piidii as a nickname.
