Character

General

At first glance, Mel appears to be a genuinely mild mannered scholar. He seems to have no trouble at maintaining a well-kept and presentable appearance, likely because he rarely ventures out and prefers to stay indoors with his nose in his books. Those that know him also know that he decries the use of magic due to the possibility of those that rely on it becoming lazy or addicted to its affects.

When not forced to travel or bottled up in his house, people can find Mel in his clinic located in Ul'dah. It's very likely not well known as Mel himself emphasizes the use of natural healing rather than using conjury or arcana to mend wounds. This has left his previously family-owned clinic in shambles and often visited only by the desperate and impoverished that cannot afford better. The shop itself, despite being in obvious need of work, seems to echo Mel's personality. It's kept very simple and has three rooms. The main room is the waiting and reception area where his maid, Shadiyah Amari, accepts guests. A small door leads directly into the examination room where Mel receives and examines patients. The only other room is a storage closet that is connected to the examination room. Here, Mel houses various plants, potions, remedies, and also allows it to double as his laboratory for mixing potions.

Appearance

Melfice carries himself with a great sense of pride and dignity, sporting a nearly perfect posture that had no doubt been meticulously practiced over the years. His manner of dress is very much the same, usually preferring a mixture of blacks and dark purples to match his violet eyes. His hair is darkly colored, usually either left to fall down to the middle of his back or held up in a ponytail when the need to be more presentable arises. His face is narrowed with high cheekbones and a patrician's nose to lend to him an overall regal appearance. His brows are thin, the inner half of which seem to permanently slant downward resulting in an overall mischievous or stern expression. He has naturally tanned skin and the Xaela-like scales seem to cover only a small portion of his face. He almost always wears gauntlets to cover his hands, perhaps to hide something or another.

Behavior

Melfice prefers to keep to himself, often going through great lengths to avoid having in-depth discussions with others. This is mostly because, as pompous as he is, the man doesn't expect many others to have anything worthwhile to say. When he does manage to find someone that intrigues him, he opens up a bit more and is far more likely to discuss things. Despite his rather unwelcoming disposition, Melfice can often be found observing the actions and conversations of others, not bothering to hide the fact that he's staring. He doesn't perceive this to be rude simply because he approaches it from a scientific standpoint. As such, he can be rather blunt at times, though he often tries to rein in his comments in order to keep in tune to society's acceptable social graces.

He does, however, have quite the temper. Melfice is generally good at hiding this, but there are a few buttons one can press that bring it out almost immediately. This is something that his Mistress, Shadiyah, has perfected to an art and uses it to control him when it best suits her needs. For others, especially those he perceives to be beneath him (which is a great many), it is much harder to drive him to anger. When he does, and it is rare, Melfice tends to make a great many mistakes despite himself.

Combat

General

Melfice tends to do what he can in order to avoid combat, though he isn't against it. His preferred method is to treat combat like a game of chess rather than a direct brawl, often through rendering the opponent immobile. He uses tuned aether crystals located in the fingers of his gauntlets as a medium through which to absorb the opponent's aether, though that requires being directly in contact with the target which is dangerous in of itself. When these spells fail, assuming he is armored, he uses a mixture of the spells with his body's natural strength to defend himself with a large blade. While not particularly skilled with the weapon, his intellect combined with the runes and spells he casts help strike a balance to give him the upper hand in combat. When left without a weapon, and while he often dislikes resorting to what he considers bestial, Melfice will resort to using his claws.

Hobbies/Talents

  • Has the natural ability to retain a lot of information he's read.
  • Loves to research anything pertaining to various old fables, tales, cultures, mythologies, as well as aether and its manipulation.
  • He has near perfect penmanship. It seems to be an art he's perfected.

Other

  • Those able to sense or detect the amount of aether one has will likely notice that Mel's is rather large.
  • Something seems off about him. Whether it's his lack of social skills or another thing entirely is unknown.
  • He keeps his satchel on him at all times. In it he carries books, vials of various colored liquids, stationary, and other such useful amenities.

Relationships

Family

Melfice's mother, father, and fiancé died some time ago, causing him to shut himself off from the rest of the world. He lost all contact with what little friends and family he had at the time. His extended family likely exists somewhere in the world, but they have no contact and are all but dead to him.

Enemies

Through Melfice's various experiments and research into arts that are considered forbidden, often on people, he has made a great deal of enemies. He understands those he has wronged and has recently tried to make amends, though most (understandably) refuse to accept his apologies in any form they take.

Shadiyah Amari - Shadiyah's family has served Mel's for many generations. Even after his family perished and Mel declared bankruptcy, she chose to stay by his side without a worry. Perhaps this is why he holds her so dear to him. On the surface, their relationship seems strictly professional. She fetches his things for him and obeys him without any sort of resistance. Should one be lucky enough to catch them unawares, however, they may notice a certain glimmer in his eye as he looks at the thoroughly faithful servant. He seems very protective of her, even if he doesn't quite have anything to protect her with. Maybe therein lies the source of his bravery, or perhaps something far more.

Rumors

Common Rumors

  • "Mel? Yeah, the Vainchelon family used to own a clinic down the street from here. Is it still even in business? They used to do completely free work! They were great for the poor."
  • "He only seems to travel into town to work or get supplies. Sometimes I see him standing around and just doing nothing. It's a bit awkward."
  • "I caught him staring at me one day. I looked back, but he never averted his eyes. Creepy."

Moderate Rumors

  • "The Vainchelon family were Midlanders, I thought? Why is this guy going around claiming to be one when he's a Xaela?"
  • "I get a strange feeling about him. He seems way too possessive of that dark-haired Miqo'te woman that's around him, yet she's always running around with hardly any clothes on."
  • "He always has strange books and relics with him, usually worn beyond repair. It's a wonder how he manages to read them."

Rare Rumors

  • "I saw him with one of those books he's always carrying around.. caught a glimpse of the name. 'Secrets of the Allagan Empire'. He reads some pretty heavy stuff."
  • "Sometimes I see him with two different women in the Quicksand. I wonder if they know about each other."
  • "That guy claims to be Mel Vainchelon, but.. I don't think it is. I've met him before, and that's definitely not him."

PC Rumors

  • "I don't trust him as far as I can throw him, but Lady Faye seems to have some use for him so I'll watch and wait for him to cross a line." - J'maaira Tuhl
