x. General

Rosalind Westwind lives a largely solitary existence as an itinerant tome monger, scavenger and amateur historian. She supplies tattered volumes to private collectors, Ul'dah's various archives and, on occasion, by ferry to the Arcanists' Guild in Limsa Lominsa. A novice arcanist, she knows only enough magic to scare off or poison the occasional wild animal or bandit. She often encounters such distractions during her raids for forgotten books and scrolls: Thanalan's harsh landscape, coupled with the Calamity's recent destruction afford her numerous pillaged caravans, abandoned homes and empty camps to survey. It is by these dubious methods she ekes out a meager livelihood and keeps her cart in working order.

x. Appearance

With ordinary hyuran looks, standard height and Thanalan-tanned skin, Rosalind disappears easily in the thick crowds of Ul'dah. She rarely dons anything but a simple shepherd's tunic, always with at least one grimoire latched to her belt and a rucksack filled to the brim and rustling loudly with scrolls. She is forever scanning her surroundings—prying eyes taking in the minutest of details. She is often unaware of the fact that her intense, grey-eyed stare unnerves those around her—most often, her customers. Her mud-brown hair is forever overgrown, unkempt and coated with dust. Her face, too, is rarely without a fresh layer of dirt—sure evidence of her more frequent excursions beyond Ul'dah's walls. Sleepless nights and the ubiquitous sun have begun to take their toll on Rosalind's once-childish face: her eyes seem crinkled and swollen. Her body, too, has become bony and weak due to her paltry income and general lack of appetite.

x. Past

With the death of those closest to her in the Milvaneth Sacrarium's destruction, Rosalind withdrew in to herself. She clung to written knowledge for certainty. Engrossed in histories, recovered journals and magical theory, she disappeared within the Ossuary's walls. The more she discovered, the more she becomes resigned to a belief that the answers she sought llie far, far beyond Thanalan. No library or archive could ever reveal the truth to her. The Calamity's unforeseen destruction of so much only supported this belief. She slept only to find restless dreams. What did the coming of the Seventh Umbral Era portend? Surely an even greater struggle—an even deeper misery—than had already befallen Eorzea.

x. Present

The Tome Raider

More frequently, Rosalind's search for the tomes and records of the past have lead her into the deeper regions of Thanalan. What knowledge lies beyond the well-traveled trade routes and scattered ruins of the desert? Her desire to expedition into Thanalan's lost corners have led to a partnership with an Ala Mihgan refugee named Landebert. He and several of his Pearl Lane compatriots have taught her of the dangers that lie to the north and how to prepare herself for combat. She now trains herself for the greater challenges ahead.

x. Relationships

[PC] Rowan Hunt - Rosalind regards this taciturn young man with gratitude after he aided her in recovering a stolen tome from her market stall. She recently learned of his faraway origins in La Noscea and has taken an interest in helping him adjust to his new life in bustling Ul'dah.

[NPC] Landebert - Rosalind's contact on Pearl Lane and occasional supplier of scrolls and tomes. Rosalind has recently struck a deal with the refugee and hired him to work as her guide and bodyguard during the longer hunts she attempts. He has proven himself a skilled fighter, when well-fed, and knowledgeable of abandoned encampments reaching to the far northeast of Ul'dah.

[NPC] Roroton - A fellow merchant and childhood acquaintance who has grown to become Rosalind's closest friend. A discerning goldsmith, merchant and collector of rare valuables, they work together on occasion when Rosalind's salvage operations yield jeweled spoils. They rarely pass several suns without seeing each other, and when they find their carts side-by-side, are inseparable in their conversation. Rosalind has long harbored feelings for the lalafell, but has never been one to acknowledge her own romantic desires or deem them important.

[PC] Marcus Steelsong - An impressively brawny man, even for a Highlander. Rosalind has offered him work alongside Landebert, but to no ends.

x. Rumors

  • "Swear I've seen her skirting around my cart at night, rifling through my wares." — Ul'dahn Merchant
  • "The bookmonger? Always staring at me when I pass by to check her new stock. Odd. Don't ask her about the Calamity. You'll be standing out in the sun for hours while she goes on." — Customer
  • "That Twelve-damned hyur... <frowns> She has never donated a single gil! And her deliveries are forever caked in mud! Once, even blood-stained! I won't speak of her!" — Yayaroku, Priest of the Order of Nald'Thal
  • "Oh, Rosa! Always something interesting to sell, if she doesn't keep it for herself. I'm always looking for her cart, but she seems to disappear for moons at a time, and without notice." — Lalafellin Customer
  • "I've scarce met another hyur so devoted to the pursuit of knowledge and so guided by the hand of Althyk. I've always loved talking to Rosie, and her parents... I wish they were still here with us under Nald's watch. The girl has no eye for fashion or value, though. Let it be known." — Roroton, Independent Jeweler and Appraiser
  • "I met her, once. I think I'd like to meet her again." — Rowan Hunt
