((WIP)) Sebastian Qerel is a simmering, secretive Dark Knight serving as an itinerant mercenary across the width and breadth of Eorzea. Always in his company is his war panther cub, Khal Bar. Unheard of before his arrival in Coerthas at the age of eighteen, Sebastien is considered a foreigner by most. Falsely accused of a crime, he found himself at the mercy of an Inquisitor named Grébix Brausin but was saved by the Dark Knight, Alfane. He offered to repay this life debt by entering her service, but was surprised when she instead took him on as a student. For two years, Sebastian trained under Alfane as her protege, learning of the powers wielded by a Dark Knight and of the dangers of the Abyss. This came to a premature end when Alfane sacrificed herself to save him from yet another attack by Grébix. In her dying moment, she bequeathed to Sebastian her soulstone. Yet all of his training did not enable him to unlock the power within this artifact; those lessons had been yet to come. His failure fueled resentment that fanned into an all-consuming hatred of everything. Yet to his surprise, it was this very darkness within him that finally unlocked the stone, revealing its power and offering it to him. With this, he swore to exact revenge upon Grébix and, in time, seized upon the opportunity to do exactly that. Yet it was at a terrible price. Many innocents died and Sebastian was branded a murderer, accused of leaving a stain on his mentor’s legacy. In shame, Sebastian left Coerthas and the people who dubbed him ‘The Voidsent Knight’, and never looked back

Biography

  • Life In the Azim Steppe

Sebastian’s life began as a swaddled child only a month old, abandoned in the Azim wilderness. He was found by a huntsman of the Qerel tribe, and picked up before the beasts of the steppe could get to the baby. The hunter’s name was Barachin, and he was puzzled, recognising the child to be of the Borlaaq tribe who were known to cut their children loose early, but usually after a year, not just a month.

Barachin brought the child into his family with his wife and three daughters. He gave the boy a name: Koghun. Many others in the tribe regarded the boy with suspicion, knowing that he was an outsider by birthright. But Barachin was a respected hunter, and it was enough for the tribe that he took responsibility for the boy. It helped that he would often regale them all with the story of how he ‘rescued’ the boy from a pack of vicious beasts which varied between anything from ten gedans to a thousand elemental aether drooling demons, depending on how bold he was feeling at the time of telling.

When Koghun was ten years old, he showed promise with a spear and began training as a lancer. He idolised his father and adored his mother who doted upon him as the youngest child, and his sisters were energetic enough to give him healthy competition.

Yet some of the other children in the tribe, with the prompting of their parents, were unkind to Koghun, calling him an outsider and often goading him until a fight broke out. Koghun’s sisters stuck up for him, but what carried Koghun through was his desire to follow in his father’s footsteps and make him proud.

At the age of fourteen, Koghun and some of his peers undertook the Qerel rite of passage - to kill their first steppe tiger. His family was there to send him off with words of encouragement and assurances that he would always belong to the Qerel tribe in their eyes no matter what.

After five days - the usual length of the trial - all of the new hunters had returned except for Koghun. Many of the tribespeople speculated that Koghun had fallen foul of the beasts, and that Barachin had only delayed this fate by bringing him into the tribe.

In truth, Koghun had indeed encountered a tiger on the fourth night of the trial. Though intimidated by the size of it, he found the resolve to confront it, unleashing a war cry to match the tiger’s mighty roar. He prevailed, and returned to the tribe - late, but triumphant.

During the celebrations that night in honour of the coming of age of new hunters, raiders descended upon the camp. Koghun was ready to fight, but his father commanded him to seek shelter with his sisters and mother. Koghun helped to lead the most vulnerable to safety, but having done that he disobeyed his father and returned to the battle.

In desperation, he felled a couple of raiders before being struck down. Yet before his assailant could land the killing blow, Barachin rushed in and struck the man, but in doing so lowered his guard to an attack from the side. The wound was fatal, and Barachin placed his lance into Koghun’s arms as he lay dying.

Koghun was racked with guilt. He swore to honour his father’s memory, but knew that the tribe would never accept him without Barachin to vouch for him. So he left and wandered the Steppe as far as the Othard’s eastern reaches. Lost and almost starving, he stole into a farming village seeking food but was caught by the chieftain’s daughter. She screamed and Koghun was chased from the village, crushing some crops and reed fencing along the way. The villagers caught him, brought him before the chieftain and pronounced that he should be tied and left to the mercy of the elements.

But Ayumi - the girl who had raised the alarm - implored her father to allow Koghun to instead repair the damage he had caused. Winning her father’s favour, she was tasked with watching the boy to make sure he carried out the tasks. Koghun was amazed at the beautiful girl who had spoken in his defense. When he asked why, all she said was that despite his rough appearance, she could see good in him.

After the repairs were made, Koghun stayed a while longer, talking with Ayumi and learning of her culture. Yet the responsibility to honour his father’s memory kept him restless, and he insisted on moving on. Ayumi made him promise that he would at least come back to visit her, and he agreed. As a token of his promise, he gave her a hand crafted necklace. Then they said their goodbyes.

In the coming weeks, Koghun was hunting when he became aware of a fellow Xaela stalking the same animal. The two attempted to ward each other off, and in doing so almost lost their prey. Ultimately, they agreed that it was better to share the prize than lose it altogether, and so worked together to catch it. Afterward, Koghun learned that his erstwhile hunting partner’s name was Burilgi. Impressed by their combined effort, they decided to hunt together a while longer.

Over the next few years, Koghun and Burilgi gathered to themselves a war band, dubbing themselves the ‘War Brothers’ and skirmishing with other tribes who encroached upon their territory. Their tribe became greatly feared as they grew in number and strength. The bond between the Brothers seemed unbreakable - but a crack was forming.

Burilgi began to notice that Koghun was frequently absent from the tribe. For Koghun had been keeping his promise to Ayumi, visiting her often. The two had fallen in love, and Burilgi eventually confronted Koghun about this. He accused him of embracing weakness, falling into the arms of a lesser people. The two brothers fought bitterly when Burilgi threatened to attack Ayumi’s village. When Koghun put Burilgi on the ground, he declared that he was leaving the war band.

And so he did, riding to Ayumi’s village by night. Ayumi received him gladly, telling him that she was planning to go on a journey to see the world, and asking him if he would be willing to leave his nomadic life in the Steppe behind to go with her. With all his heart, Koghun promised that he would go with her to the ends of the world.

But a glow on the horizon alerted them to an attack on Ayumi’s village. Burilgi had followed Koghun and put the village to the torch. Koghun rushed to help, but it was too late - Ayumi’s tribe were already overwhelmed. The two of them were pinned to the ground while Burilgi stood over them, declaring that Koghun had been infected by a weakness, and that as his ‘Brother’ it was his duty to cut that weakness out. As soon as he spoke the sword, he swung his blade and struck Ayumi’s head from her shoulders.

Blinded by rage, Koghun fought himself free and plunged his lance into Burilgi, slaying him with such ferocity that the rest of the warband were routed from fear. With tears of grief, Koghun took Ayumi’s necklace, tied it to his left horn and buried her on a grave sprinkled with flowers. Burilgi was left to rot on the ground, the lance still protruding from his chest.

  • The Days in Coerthas

In the coming days, Koghun wandered aimlessly until he arrived in the Coerthas Region. Becoming lost, he crossed paths with a Xaelic caravan who sheltered him from the blizzard. He thanked his rescuers, but did not share the burden they could see was weighing on his heart. He travelled with them to a small town where he earned some money assisting in the mine. From the other miners he learned of the City of Ishgard, the Orthodox Church, the Temple Knights and the Dragonsong War.

Returning from the mines one day, Koghun and his fellows were attacked by a roaming Aevis. Armed only with a pickaxe, Koghun fought back, fleeing with his life and sparing one other miner from being devoured. Yet he could not outrun the beast, nor pierce its hide with his makeshift weapon. When it knocked him to the ground and death seemed certain, the Aevis was stunned by a ball of purple energy. Koghan seized the opportunity and took cover.

As he watched, a dark figure emerged from the swirling blizzard, wielding a claymore and clad in obsidian black armour, and with a strange purple stone around their neck. Koghun watched in amazement as the warrior battled the beast with power the young lancer had never witnessed before.

Using the distraction to escape back to town, Koghun related the events to his caravan fellows who hastily advised him to keep quiet about it. It seemed that a number of sinister events in the past few days had attracted the attention of the Inquisition, and Koghun was advised that it was best not to draw any undue attention.

Over the coming days, the Inquision - led by young Knight called Grébix Brausin - conducted an investigation that led to one of Koghun’s fellow caravaners being accused of murder and practicing the dark arts.

Koghun knew little of these things, which made it easy for the accused party to shift the blame onto him. Koghun was accused, dragged out and beaten. Nobody spoke a word in his defense. Grébix delayed his sentence until he could be taken to Ishgard. Koghun had heard that Grébix was known for his merciless pursuit of all whom he regarded as heretical. So on the way, he attempted to escape, retrieving his lance and slaying two of Grébix’s knights.

But Koghun did not get far before Grébix caught up to him and easily brought him to the ground. Furious that Koghun had repaid his ‘mercy’ with the deaths of his men, Grébix was about to commit Koghun to hell when he was struck by a familiar orb of purple energy.

The same dark figure who had saved him from the Aevis strode out of the storm, readying her claymore and charging at Grébix. After a ferocious battle, Grébix was driven off and the warrior took Koghun to an abandoned house in Western Coerthas, where she tended to his wounds.

He learned that his rescuer was a Dark Knight named Alfane. She was outraged by Koghun’s account of what had happened to him. Seeing that he owed Alfane his life, Koghun pledged his service to her. She assured him that no such repayment was necessary. Yet when he insisted, she invited him to spar with her as a test. She was a powerful fighter and bested Koghun with relative ease, yet she was impressed with the promise he showed. She told him that she was going to Tail Feather, and that he could accompany her if he so wished.

On the road, Alfane continued to hone Koghun’s skills through sparring matches and exercises. He came to know her as a kind woman who rendered aid to the people of Tail Feather and provided Koghun with the first role model since his father.

Yet it was in their leisure moments, when Alfane would try to get Koghun to loosen up a bit in the tavern in Feather Tail, that she really saw the bitterness and resentment that was seated deeply in the young man’s heart. For all her asking, Koghun would not open up about this, so she attempted to draw the darkness out of him through training.

Eventually, Koghun relented and told her everything. To his surprise, Alfane empathised, divulging that she had lost her son and husband to Grébix and she was all too familiar with the smothering rage that can consume a person when they lose people they love.

The two became close after that. Alfane began to teach him the ways of the Dark Knight, their history and their methods and, of course, their fighting techniques. He asked about the stone she wore around her neck. She explained that this was a soulstone, with which she was able to hold the aether and experience of those who had worn it before her, as well as memories that brought her joy from time to time. The memories she was referring to were those of the stone’s most recent owner - her husband. She had been bequeathed the stone upon his death, and she admitted this was why she wanted to help Koghun.

Justice and Vengeance, she explained, are cousins often mistaken for each other, but with very little in common. Anger left unchecked can destroy a person...as it had done to Alfane’s husband.

Koghun’s first test in this regard came when he and Alfane were asked for help in leaving Coerthas. The people asking were from the same caravan that had given Koghun over to Grébix. At first, Koghun adamantly refused, but he saw that Alfane was testing him and relented. After simmering for the first day of travel, he almost came to blows with the father of the group. Yet because he took the time to listen, he came to understand that the man was simply protecting his family, and had not meant Koghun any ill-will. Koghun felt his heart soften, as he could well understand the sentiment.

In the last stretch of the journey they were set upon by an adolescent Mylodon. Koghun and Alfane fought it off, saving the family of travellers and, for the first time in a long time, Koghun felt the light and satisfaction of having done a good thing enter his heart. Alfane’s smile assured him that her training was having the desired effect.

For another year, Koghun accompanied Alfane in her duties, helping those in need and escorting refugees out of Coerthas. But the past caught up with them. One refugee they helped had given information to the inquisition in exchange for the absolution of sins. Their caravan was set upon by none other than Grébix and his knights.

Having increased in skill, Koghun attempted to take Grébix on, but the man was still his superior in power. He broke Koghun’s lance and knocked him down. Alfane stunned Grébix with a spell and drew the man away. The moment went into suspension as Grébix ordered his men to stay back so that he could fight Alfane one on one. Koghun used the time to get back to his feet, but just as he recovered, Grébix landed a critical blow upon Alfane.

Koghun cried out and threw the tip of his lance, striking Grébix in the leg. Alfane immediately commanded Koghun to run, but he disobeyed, rushing to her side. But Alfane insisted that he needed to leave while she held the Inquisition knights off. She pressed her soulstone into his hand and insisted that she would be right behind him.

He could not disobey his mentor further. Koghun ran whilst Grébix and his knights descended upon Alfane. When the dust settled and Alfane did not emerge, Koghun looked at the stone in his hand and remembered something she had told him - a soulstone can only be bequeathed on the death of its last owner. He hurried back to look for her and found Alfane lying dead among the bodies of the caravan.

A fresh grief overtook Koghun, the scenes of his father’s death returning to him in light of the present tragedy. He buried his mentor and swore that he would continue her work and one day avenge her.

  • The Path

Koghun roamed The Coerthas Western Highlands alone. For yet again, he was unable to save someone close to him. As the months passes by, the mourning dark knight continued in his mentor’s place, aiding those in need from power abusing nobles and the Inquisition but slowly distanced himself to the point of no longer intervening. Realizing if he was unable to protect those close to him, how can he protect total strangers. He then began having night terrors of his past and began hearing whispers. He fought Mylodons, Yetis and other beasts of Coerthas to sharpen his claymore skills but was unable to muster up the same strength or abilities that Alfane had but the whispers became more clear and took on a familiar voice every passing day. Koghun grew bitter and infuriated at the whispers and his inability to use the stone. He began to doubt the stone and believed that Alfane lied to him. In a haze of rage he cast the stone out and cursed Alfane's name. Soon after, the stone began to glow red and then Abyss manifested an entity and took on the appearance of Burilgi, his former comrade. The entity informed Koghun if he wished to unlock the abilities of the dark knight soul stone he must surrender to the darkness within him. Koghun refused, he was frighten in disbelief at the sight of the entity but it persisted, Esteem: “I know your desire, I understand your plight and I am aware of your fears. I know you better than anyone for I've always been with you. You survived because you are strong yet cursed with the ludicrous sense for protecting the weak and burden yourself of their deaths and look where it got you. You came all this way for power and all that power you seek has appeared before you. I can mediate your suffering, turn your agony and rage into strength that beyond Alfane's... beyond anybody's. Surrender, Embrace the Abyss and be nullified of your pain, grow in strength.” Koghun accepted the Esteem and was enveloped by a faint crimson fog . The entity gave Koghun a warning that he will never forget Esteem: “If you were to falter, if your heart was ever to weaken, know that I will be your ruin.” Stories about Grébix's heroic victory against an dark magic-wielding heathen spread through the towns and villages in Coerthas and filled Koghun with disdain, growing more impatient until he was unable to bare it any longer and decided to bring Grébix's demise to him and set out to find him. One night during a snowstorm, He come across footprints in the snow that lead him to a middle aged Elezen man, surrounded by some ruffians. Koghun saved the man and recognizing the black armor and claymore he heard of from recent stories, the man asked if Koghun was the mysterious knight he heard of. The man revealed himself as a noble and plead for Koghun to aid him in taking his family out of Coerthas. He told his story about his troubles with a young noble. The man told him of how the nobleman demanded for his daughter hand, but the man refused him. The noblemen threaten them with imprisonment and death. The man revealed that the noblemen was a member of the Brausin house with connections high up in the Inquisition and feared that the noble will make good on his threat. Koghun first refused the man's plea, the man fell to his knees and begged Koghun at his feet to at least take his daughter away. Koghun heard the name Brausin then thought about Alfane and accepted the man plea, not to aid the old man but to fianlly have his revenge. The man wept in happiness and they continued into town. The man invited him into his home for the night to show his gratitude but Koghun turned down his invitation. The man then asks him for his name. It was there Koghun gave him the name of one of the Ishgardian miners he once worked with, to conceal his identity.

Koghun: "You may call me Sebastian"

Then man's family comes out, hugging him, giving thanks to Halone for his safe return. The man told them that Sebastian saved him but when he turned around, Sebastian wasn't anywhere in sight. Two days later Sebastian returns to the same town and noticed a gathering. It was a hanging, among them was the same man from two nights ago and his family standing on the gallows. A group of temple knights surround the accused as one of them read the charges with noblemen standing beside him. Sebastian stood at the edge of the crowd, looking around for Grebix not concerning himself with the family who were at death's door. He waited and waited and but Grebix did not appear so Sebastian would make him appear. Sebastian made his way the end of the gallows, He drew his claymore and the blade becomes engulfed in a dark aura that crept onto Sebastian emitting a dark red aura around him and slew the first knight he saw. Sebastian shouted for Grebix as the crowd disbursed then fighting begun, Sebastian cut down the first two knight that came at him and fought off the remaining unitl Grébix appeared. Grébix unsheathed his sword and pointed it at Sebastian, signaling his men to attack. The knights rushed Sebastian all at once, he drove his claymore into the floor and performed Unleash, impaling the knights around him. In the sight of all the slaughter the Noblemen ran off in fear but Grébix steadfast at the sight. Grébix: "I see you're still alive, I'm glad. For Halone has blessed me with the opportunity to redeem myself for my blasphemous mistake. Hearken to me Fiend! I will smite thee back down from the vile crevice you crawled from, just as I did with that heretic woman! " Sebastian lunges at Grébix and the two face off in a fierce fight. Their weapons clashed against one another, both giving their all as they exchange blows and minor cuts at one another. Sebastian letting rage and anger fuel him. They exchange blows and minor cuts at one another. With every swing, Sebastian brought his unrelenting wrath upon Grébix and Grébix began to waver over Sebastian's power. Sebastian stroke Grébix, inflicting a heavy gash on his shoulder. Grébix backed off as blood ran down his arm as it shook and went limb. Grebix can barely hold his sword but wasn't going to let up. He firmly gripped his hand with the another and charged Sebastian. Sebastian charged him as well, cutting off the Paladin's right arm and thrust the claymore straight through Grébix. Grébix exhales pained groans as Sebastian continues to push his claymore deeper in with hate and anger. :Grébix: "No, *coughs* Not, yet!! *coughs* Auldelle *coughs* Ifrelle *coughs* Irene… F-for-g-give me, My loves... I've failed you.” Sebastian then rips the claymore throughout Grébix’s side. Sebastian focus his attention the the noblemen as he flees from the horrors he witnessed. Sebastian shoots a Unmend at the Noblemen. The Noblemen falls down from the impact, panicked he unsheathed his knife and charged at Sebastian. Sebastian punched the Noblemen, knocked him to the ground. The Noblemen began to crawl away until Sebastian slashed his shoulder. The Noblemen began to curse at Sebastian, barraging him with insults. He then rolled on his back and witnessed Sebastian stood over him. He begged and promised him with amnesty and riches but to no avail. He gave his final words hoping to prolong the inevitable but Sebastian impales him and continues to repeatedly unrelenting. When he finally stopped, he noticed the townspeople expression of horror on their faces, they were terrified by the sight of dead knights that surrounded the black armored Xaela. Sebastian gazed at the carnage with a blank expression until he looked upon the gallows to see the middle aged Elezen dangle lifelessly from the ropes, along with his family. Sebastian looked around at the carnage he brought, he didn’t feel any sense of accomplishment and remembered Alfane's words of caution. He understood what she meant, this wasn’t justice but unbridled violence and the deaths of innocents. He bowed his head in regret and shame as he walked out of town, the people ran in terror from him. "It's a demon! Stay away from it! Monster!!, Its gonna kill us all!"He thought if Alfane was here, she too will call him a monster. Till this day, the people of Ishgard were convinced that a Void-sent attacked their town and Sebastian will be referred to as "The Void-Sent Knight". Some people believed that it’s all a hoax. Following the events that brought the end of The Dragonsong War, No one has seen him since but a high bounty has been placed for his capture. Eventually Sebastian and the events that transpired fell into stories. Grébix, the valiant knight, killed by a foul man known as The Voidsent Knight. He's currently traveling around the land of Erozea, taking on mercenary work of all kind.

OOC Notes

I'm still relatively new to the whole RP scene so I take every RP encouter as a learning experience. Also I can't write paragraphs at a time, even with my extensive backstory for my character, it took alot of editing and proofreading to get the story you see on the wiki. I'm not good at world building/world desrciptive writing so I prefer to RP in game. I might not always be available to RP. I apologize in advance for this if its an inconvenience to anyone. I like doing arcs so I'm comfortable in dying in story if you like, just gives a heads up so I don't accidentally meta-game or something along that line. If you need to send a msg I'll leave my discord here or msg me in game. Thank you for checking out my OC's wiki. Chan-Chan#7527
